DxWnd is a nice utility that intercepts system calls to make fullscreen programs run in a window.

The program is not without bugs but generally this program works for a lot of games, including Age of Empires.

Windowed mode is supported in BinaryPatcher, you can enable/disable it as you wish on any version you're using (provided you're using a version that is compatible with standard version).

Edit: BinaryPatcher might be a little outdated, please use CustomizeAOE which is more user-friendly !

I can expand on the opening thread by detailing exact instructions for each method (DxWnd, UPatch and via BinaryPatcher).

Give me a few days and I will put up appropriate tutorials. I think each of the 3 methods have their unique benefits. DxWnd isn't AoE specific - so you can use it for any game (AoK etc). UPatch has resolution support plus fixes balance issues/bugs. BinaryPatcher is more like DxWnd but is limited to just AoE (and can be extended to fix other exe issues if required).

I could upload DxWnd but seeing as it is an open source ongoing project may be best to point visitors to the latest exe.
