Topic Subject: How about AoM II is Age of Legends...with the unfortunate acronym AoL..
posted 05-21-04 00:23 AM EDT (US)
other than the AoL thing, i think it would be a good idea to have an Age of Legends set in the medieval times. and sooooo...(ive finished celts and norse, and part of mesopotamians and hardly any on Japanese yet)

Age of Legends
Civilizations:
Celts
Norse
Mesopotamians
Japanese

Celts:
The Celts have your “traditional” medieval creatures as myth units, such as grendels, banshees, and unicorns. Their hero system is Paladins. Paladins are strong units with a ranged attack vs. air. You can have unlimited Paladins. They have villagers, which are like the Greek villagers of AoM. The Celts have strong units, but they are very expensive. The Celts are strongest in the later ages. They gather favor by building Monoliths and Megaliths. Monoliths give a small trickle and Megaliths give a large trickle. Each major god’s monoliths and megaliths have special abilities.

Human Units:
Town Center:
Villager-Celtic Villagers are your regular villagers, like Greek villagers from AoM
Barracks:
Spearman-The base Celtic infantry, bonus vs. cavalry
Javalineer-Archer with bonus vs. archers. Quick-moving

Paladin-Celtic hero. Bonus vs. legendary units. Shoots arrows against air.

When you build an Akkadian, one of these 3 weapons is randomly selected, meaning Akkadians are very unpredictable heroes. While you can build a spear, sling, or bow Akkadian from the Temple, there is only a 50% chance on each one, and a 25% chance on the other two. The Mesopotamians have both quick, cheap units and strong, expensive units. Their villagers are Peasants, which are slower workers than other civilizations’ villagers, but each individual Peasant works more efficiently the more Peasants there are working on one task. Their buildings are expensive and take long to build, but are very hard to destroy. They are most efficient in the middle ages. They gather favor by having their peasants worship the gods at temples.

Japanese:
The Japanese have mythological creatures from Shinto, such as Onis, Tengu, and Kappas. Their hero system is Shoguns, Dynamos, and Monks. You can have 1 Shogun, which is a powerful melee hero, 3 Dynamos, which are ranged heroes with massive range, and Monks, which are quick, quick-attacking heroes with a quarterstaff. Their villagers are Citizens and Gatherers. Citizens can build buildings, but cannot gather resources. Gatherers can gather resources, but cannot build buildings. They are strongest in the middle ages. They gather favor by fighting. Whenever a unit deals damage to another unit, it gives a small bit of favor. Also, Monks and Shoguns give a slow trickle of favor.

Why must everyone try to find cheap ways to introduce native americans into any game?

OK, sorry... it's just that natives didn't even have solid mythologies as more advanced civilizations did.

There's a lot of difference between worshipping "death" than worshipping the God Anubis, who had a story.

That seems to be an extension of Age of Mythology. I don't know if they should end it at that and come up with a new gameplay entirely. Titans wasn't a good extension of the game IMO.

Age of Legends sounds like a great idea, but I would like something with more of a Robin Hood/Beowulf/King Arthur style legends. I think that would be fun, but I like that style of lit.

On Topic: I agree that many of these suggestions are good, but would be better in an AoM sequel or mod or something than an entirely new game from ES.

To a degree, I agree with this. My problem is that Native cultures or civs always get 'crammed' in on the margins. AoC put in two virtually identical Central American civs when really it ought to have done more than just one region (i.e., one Northwestern or Plains or Southeastern or Northeastern tribe in addition to either Aztecs or Mayans. And yes, the differences are more than just names and cosmetics.) I'm kinda waiting around hoping one day a game will come out that will have an American pre-contact scenario where tribes can vie against one another in empire building. (There is evidence of large, regional and cross-regional empire building -Anasazis, Aztecs, Northern and Southern moundbuilding empires, etc-, but unfortunately the biggest ones either fell before Europeans set foot on the continents or were destroyed shortly thereafter by disease and war.) I don't like the implication that Natives either didn't exist or didn't matter before they came into the knowledge of Europe and conflict with Europeans, but hey, that's where the market is and games are made with that in mind. I still hope for something a little more outside the box, though.

I'm a little confused. Your location is Mexico and your sig says you worked on an Aztec civ mod or outline, so I'm guessing you know at least a little about some Native cultures, so it really surprises me you'd make a remark like this. Sure, compared to the intricacies of the Egyptian pantheon, some tribes had relatively simple belief systems. Then again, others had some incredibly complicated ones. Venus figured so prominently in Aztec life and spiritual beliefs that they designed architecture and windows and angles in their buildings to perfectly trace the path of Venus through the sky throughout the year. (http://pages.pomona.edu/~tlm02000/www/aztec_astronomy.html has a lot of good info on how they used Venus to plan daily events, planting, etc. as well) Many Plains tribes had their own constellations, each representing a person, animal, or spirit, which figured into important and interrelated creation stories and spiritual beliefs. N. American Southwestern tribes (Pueblo, Navajo, Anasazi, Apache, many others) had extremely organized mythologies. Some Native societies (contrary to public belief) even had written "Bibles" codifying their belief systems, such as the Popol Vuh, which survives and is in print today. (Many more were lost through intentional destruction by the Spanish and other Christian missionaries.)

Sorry if this has come off as a lecture, it wasn't my intention but as a Native person it just pushes all my buttons when people make unsubstantiated tropic remarks about the supposed simplicity or primitiveness of Native cultures, beliefs, and worldviews, or their "obvious inferiority" next to the cultures of the ME or Europe. I know it's a commonly held belief, but, frankly, it's ignorant.

When people here refer to Native Americans, they mean Sioux, Iriquois, Cherokees, et cetera.

The term Native American is NOT used around here to name Mayas, Aztecs or Incas, although they certainly are.

Aztec and Mayan mythology is as complex as Egyptian or Greek one, and they were two incredibly advanced civilizations.

When I talked about not being the same adoring "death" rather than Anubis, I was talking about natives from the modern US and Canada, which were the ones that were referred to in the first place.

I'm talking about not introducing tribes, but real civilizations, and that includes Aztecs, Mayas, Incas, Japanese, Chinese, Assyrians or whatever.

NOT Cherokees, Sioux, Navajos, Zulus, Lybians, Polynesians, Mongolic Hordes or anything similar.

Hahahahaha! American civilizations! Very funny!

Here are some civilizations that create the most known monsters:

Franks
Celts
Mayan
Aztecs
Japanese
Chinese
Greeks
Egyptian
Babylonians (is the spell right?)
Iraq (they created one of the strongest monster: Tiamat)
Africans
Spanish/Portugal
Inca

NOT AMERICAN INDIANS.

Duskofdead, personally, i think many of the Native stories rock. Unfortunatly, they just don't make a good game.

Actually, I think this whole AoL things is one of the very few good ideas in this forum. Quite frankly though, it ain't gonna happen. Or if it does, ES has already decided it.

Gotta find an acronym that isn't shared with America Off-Line though... lol.

yea, but i couldnt think of any that well, but apparenlty America Off-Line is giving up the AOL abbreviation and simply going by America On(off)line. and theres not that many other things you could use.

btw Outlander, how come you never come to the community forum anymore?

Your idea does seem to be the most feasible...

on with the ranting:
Don't get me wrong because I am a Native (North) American ((Cherokee)) myself... but when you compare our mythology to that of Egypt, Greece or even Mayan (or atlantean... rolls eyes) it truly is simple, i mean yes there are big stories and all but it wasnt until recently that those tribes even had a written language... stories were just passed down... and how can you tie in a continant that wasnt discovered and make it sound even reletivly close to the truth...
I have thought for a while that since Atlantis was added... then perhaps they might use that as a link between the European and American continents but honestly they have stretched mythology enough... I mean they made an entire civilization out of plato's little description.. which wasnt proven... dont get me wrong I think its fine to add them in as kind of an "ultimate mythology" but dont use them as a link for the two continents that would just be going to far for somthing that probably isn't real

back to the topic... yes I do think that AoL would be a good idea and no I dont think that the acronym would have anything to do with gameplay except some jokes about ESO being as slow as AoL.. but if ES were to consider this the name shouldnt and wouldnt change their mind either way

I would also include the magic part of the myths... ie Merlin as a hero... my only fear would be that it would become too similar to harry potter if they introduced magic.. but if merlin was it, i think it would be cool...

i guess i could use the babylonians or some other mesopotamian civilization.

and the atlanteans are, in AoM, really just an expansion on greek mythology. the argus, heka gigantes, satyr, carnivora, and all that stuff are really just greek mythology. but the greeks had such a vast mythology, hey, why not make 2 greeks
