I was reading Bruce Shelly's blog recently where he cited some research done using Age of Mythology. Research performed by the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Institute for Medical Cybernetics & AI Center for Brain Research Medical University of Vienna used AIs in Age of Mythology to see how a "neurotic" AI would do.
Results:type-wins-average winning time
It'd be interesting to see how this could be incorporated into the AoE3 AI. What do you think?
The overestimation and extreme playing styles reminds me of how a human would play.Character types
-Four bot variants with different personality parameters:
defensive, aggressive, normal and neurotic
-Example: Influence of “Neuroticism”
High:
irrational assessment of resource value
e.g. amount of available timber is overestimated
tendency to resort to extreme playing styles:
aggressive vs. defensive
Low:
rational adjustment of assessed resource value
use game statistics unchanged
Results:
Apparently overreacting and over-investing seems to be conducive to winning. It seems, to me, to be engaged in an unintentional triage of sorts- saving certain things before they get too bad by switching from offensive to defensive so fast. It reminds me of how a human player might throw up forts if a defending army was lost. By overspending, could it be possible that the lower priorities are found to be outclassed by high-priority successes?Neurotic 7 : 0 31:45 min
Normal 6 : 1 40:34 min
Defensive 6 : 1 35:17 min
Aggressive 7 : 0 44:35 min
