Mercs are badass and expensive, and they are played often in competitive games. Here are their specific stats, along with which mercs are available to which civs, and the costs associated. The few related merc techs are included.

* Attack rates are 3.0/1.5 for ranged/melee unless specified
* Ranges for ranged units are given in parentheses next to the ranged attack value

Mercenaries Available by Civ

Mercenaries are tiered by cost/age available. All Age 3 mercs are 1200C (except for the British Hessian Jaeger Division, which costs 1500C); these are single type Mercenary Units.

All Age 4 mercs are 2000C; these are the Mercenary Armies, which provide a mix of 3 unit types in various quantities.

Privateer cards are tiered by age but not cost. Privateers (500C) is an Age 2 card. Privateer Fleet (1000C) is an Age 3 card. The British Privateer Armada (1000C) and the Dutch TEAM Privateers (500C) are Age 4 cards.

Both merc techs, Mercenary Loyalty and the German Improved Mercenaries, are Age 3 cards.

They are a Home City shipment, found in the Harbor. Mercs are odd, in that the shipment requires coin to play. You can also get mercs from the Church if you play the advanced Church improvements card.

Well...it's hardly odd that you have to have cash to hire mercenaries (they rarely take credit cards or IOUs). <g>

What seemed odd to me is that they come from the Harbor...then I realized the obvious: you're hiring them in Europe. <g>

very nice, could you put what age the cards become available in. Also if everyone doesnt know if you want to play merc cards very often then you should play as the german civ because they get them at an early age. all other civs usually only get to play them in late game.

thanks for the feedback. the age availability is reflected in the price tiers, but i'll edit it to make it clearer. there's also the order in which the cards are available; getting some merc cards require other merc cards to be owned first. there's also hc level dependencies, but those are also related to the cost to play the card.

Dutch with their banks often get surplus gold that can be spent on mercs. they may not have them in colonial, but in team games during fortress mercs can come fairly easily for dutch.

Improved Mercenaries + Hackapells = greatest attack
Improved Mercenaries + Mamelukes = greatest HP

Available in 3rd & 4th age respectively. Resent in imperial.

What's good about Germany is that they get EXTRA mercs with the shipment. For example, instead of 7 Hackapells, Germany gets 9.
I <3 Germany.
There is a bug with the Hackapells after using the improved mercenary card. It says the attack/hp is increased by 15%. Well, with Hackapells the attack increases from 121 to 157, that's 30% not 15%!
