Introduction to the AoE3H Community Forum
Last updated: 9 Aug 2007

Welcome to the AoE3H Community Forum! Before posting, please read this guide to help you understand this forum, being friendly towards other forumers and the like. This guide was made with my experiences on HeavenGames which is over 7 years now, plus scouring and gathering information from other helpfull threads. First of all, the basics of the forum.

Basic foruming on AoE3H
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

First of all, there are the main rules you have to obey when posting, otherwise you risk being banned. The rules can be found here, or you can click the “Rules” (marked with a red arrow) link next to help button in the menu, which can be found in the upper-left corner of the forum:

Creating an account

Click on the "Register" link, found in the upper left corner of the forum. Accept the TOS (Terms of Agreement) and fill in your username and e-mail adress. After you click the register button, you'll receive an email with a password.

You can login now and start posting on the forums.

Changing your Account Options
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

When logged in, click on the "My Account" link which is located in the upper left corner of the forum. Fill in your password and you'll go to the page where you can change any info you like, your password for example, or your location etc.

You can also edit your signature, anything regarding signatures can be found and asked here.

Profile page

When you are logged in, you can see the profile pages of other members. They might include things about themselves, their e-mail address etc. To view someone's profile, click the Profile button, which is located right next to the Edit post button:

You can click them away when you're done viewing them. You have a profile page of your own too, the information in it depends on what you have filled in in your account options.

Skype Icon

Skype is a peer-to-peer Internet telephony network which allows you to voice communicate with users all over the world. When the icon turns green, it means the person using that Skype account is online at the moment. If you want Skype as well, go to:

http://www.skype.com

After you're done registering there, go to your account options and include your ICQ number. Save your page and a ICQ flower will be included in every reply/thread you post.

Website button

If you have your own website, you can make a small image link to it. Again, go to your account and fill in the "My website" field.

Save your page and every post will have your website link included in your replies/threads. The image link looks like this:

Mind that you are NOT allowed to link to porn, warez or any other offensive material that is in violation of the CoC.

Starting Threads and posting Replies
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

Posting Replies
If you created an account and logged in, you can begin posting replies in threads. If you feel like giving your comments or opinion on things, click the reply button, which is located in the upper-and-lower right corner of the page:

Click on it, and a new page with a text area will appear. Fill in your comments and click on the "Submit reply" button; or, if you like to preview your comments first, click on the "Preview Reply" button.

Creating Threads
Creating threads is actually quite similar to posting replies. When logged in, click the "New Topic" button:

Like posting replies, a new page will open with a text field. But this time it will have an additional field, also known as the Subject Field. As the name already says, this is where you put the "subject" or "title" of the thread. Right underneath it is the main text field were you briefly put the info that relates to the subject title you just filled in. After you're done, you can either click on the "Preview Topic" button again or if you're sure it's grammar free and everything's correct, click the "Add new Topic" button.

Please mind that you are not allowed to spam in any way possible.

Editing your posts

If you've made a mistake, or maybe put in a wrong link for example, you can edit your post by click on the edit button:

Click on this button, it's located underneath the Subject title, next to the date and time recording. The post/thread you created will open again, and you can edit anything you like, except the subject title. Also mind that when editing posts when the [ubbon ] tags are used, they tags will be removed so you have to include them again, otherwise your post gets messy.

You cannot change the title of any threads you have created, but if you make a mistake, a moderator may correct it for you if you ask

Using the Search feature

If you've been away for a while, and missed something out, or if you want to search for that ol' good informative thread, you can use the search feature which is located on the bottom of every main forum page:

As you can see, there are 2 seperate fields you can fill in to search. For example, if you type "Angel Socrateius" in the author field, every thread he made on the current forum page will appear. If you're searching for a specific topic, fill in "Another RPG" for example. If you're not sure what the subject title exactly was, you can also use keywords such as "RPG" or "Another". Every thread including these words will appear on the page.

N.B. When searching for a forumer's posts, be sure to use their original username if they've had a name change (it's the id under their name).

Now, you can include several things in your posts such as UBBcode or Smileys. Note: They don't work in the Subject Title Field when creating a new thread. Below is a list of what you can add to your posts:

All allowed UBBCodes:

      Staff color meanings

      Cherub
Cherubs are the lowest rank of staff. They often moderate the forums, post news, and contribute content, but they may also gain FTP access to post content on their own. All staff must be Cherubs for at least 3 months before being promoted.

      Angel
Angels are the second rank of staff that have performed well enough as Cherubs to warrant a promotion. Likewise, they're not necessarily moderators. They are often given a specific section of a Heaven which they administrate.

*Note: While some staff maybe be Angels (red) at this Heaven, they might be Seraphs at other Heavens. For example, Taufiq and Xiphias are Seraphs at other sites, but here are only Angels. On the forums, however, they will appear as Seraphs by their color.

      Seraph
Seraphs are head of a heaven. They usually post news a lot and administrate things. They Have full access to the HG server.

Great guide! This should defeintely be stickied IMO.

You should maybe also add that Angels have FTP access. I also think Soccy and Jayhawk are halos too, but I'm not sure. Maybe also add the FMT (GillB, Jayhawk, Soccy, Zen, Chris & Z).

I never got the purpose of threads like that, ,seeing as there *is* a help section in the forums, and noobs are noobs mostly because they ignore any sticky threads in the first place.

    Then again, I'm grumpy.

Good post phatfish. Nitpick on the staff definitions though:

Cherubs are any staff without FTP access. They can do things other than moderate. (EG post news, edit content in association with someone else, etc.)

Angels are staff with FTP access. Likewise, they're not necessarily moderators. (I'm not, for instance. )

And it might be an idea to clear up than Seraphs are head of a heaven, not this one, since AoMH has quite a few orange names.

    Halos:

Halo's don't necessarily own part of the site; only Zen, Reckless, and Spineman do.

They are HG's ‘board of directors’ and make company-wide decisions taking care of various parts of HG activities:

You also missed 3 Halos out
    Jayhawk (Director of Operations)
    Draco (Legal)
    Socvazius (Director of Training)
(I'm not going to give these guys' real names out myself )
