Topic Subject: Maori AOM culture.
posted 10-02-05 00:57 AM EDT (US)

I was wandering if New Zealand Maori could be A possible Mythology. (I can almost hear you laughing) There are more obvious choices but if they were to make a mass of new cultures, like in AOK. This might be a very unique and not yet thought of Civilization?

I havn't worked out much but the fortress/castle building could be the Pa? (many of you will have no idea what that is.) The Waka could be one of the boats. The Tanewha could be a myth unit. Maori have many gods. I don't know the names. They also have very interesting weapons and ideas that the rest of the world dosn't have. I will have to do some more researching into more info.

Post your comments.

By Maori do you mean part of Aboriginal Myth or Oceanic? Or by themselves?

I totally think that is a GREAT idea!!! the maori culture is a really good one to have because they have things that other things don't. like the animals, you could put in Moas and even Kiwis that are rare. they would have many differnt things, whitch would be good when the other things come. like those things that is made from the green stone (Jade). the kiwis have magical powers that give the people magic powers. they could get flight, the thing the kiwi cant do. they would wear the kiwi on their head and they would shoot from far away and not get hurt because they could run really fast like the kiwi and and the moa.

Yes, the maori culture on it's own would be good. But could borrow ideas from Oceania. I found some info.

--Favour--
The Maoti gain favour by their heros killing enemy human
units. The hero then gets stronger and all stats are heightened slightly the more they destroy. The higher their stats the more favour is collected each time an enemy human is killed.

--Economy--
The Maori Villager (tribesman) is very slow
but efficient as it can carry double the resources
that an ordinary villager would carry.
The Maori do not have any domesticated animals.

--Military--
All the Maori military units are created at either the
Marae or the Pa.

--Heros--
The Maori have one hero per age (as the greeks) plus can use their chiefs. Slowly upgrades all stats as more human units are destroyed (excludes ships)

I have a few myth units that could be for different gods.

Demas: Benevolent Spirits of Fire
Babamik: Corodile demoness
Aumakua: Ancestor Ghost
Milu: Spirits of caves, that like Medusa, can turn you into stone with a glance
Wahini-hai: a nasty demoness that steals children
Venine Hae: Wild women wind spirits
Totoima: A boar monster
Rogo-Tumu-Here: Octopus demon
Qasavara: cannibal monster
Kakamora: Water spirits that drag canoes to the bottom

I'll find more if I had more Time, but I have a huge Language project to work on.

You're two gods short of nine so here are two:

Whiro: God of Mischeif and evil

Uenuku: God of Rainbows

And a Titan: Hukere- the Guardian of the dead. Made out of rock.

Pretty cool, huh?

Sorry i havn't found much about it for a while.
Since Maori wasn't as significant as other civs I thought it could be combined with some of the other Oceanic islands. Like Fiji, Tonga and samoa? What do you think?

Most of the myth units I gave you are actually not from Maori. Its not really that big in mythology.

I have some units though: (From New Zealand)

Tiaha Waka: arrow canoe

Prau Waka: Siege canoe

Matahorua Waka: Meelee canoe

Tawirirangi: a hero ship

And I reccommend changing cheif to Tohunga which was the Maori cheiftan

Ranged siege unit: Imu

Rakau: warrior using a large extremely sharp curved two-handed whale-bone weapon

Hoeroa: a warrior that uses a whip with a serrated end

I also have a unique thing Maori warriors can do. They can set Pewa, which are traps invisible to your enemies that do tons of damage.

And finally the Ngati-Porou could replace the tribseman for the villager.
