Topic Subject: Russians For X-pack in AOK
posted 01-29-06 12:09 PM EDT (US)
This is one of the civilizations me and Novoa20 discussed that could be in a possible X-pack for AOK.

THE RUSSIANS

Civilization Bonuses
-Cheap Infantry (20% chepear)
-Good Cavalry Archer
-Cavalry good against buildings, and villager, making them excellent raiders.
-Stable is avialable in dark age.
-Houses cost 100 wood, but support 10 population.

Civilization Weaknesses
-No Two-handed Swordman or Champion
-Barracks is not available until feudal age.

Dark Age
Not much to say about this age except they can build a stable and train Scout cavalry, but they can't build a barracks.

Feudal Age
-Barracks available

Castle Age
Unique Technology :
-Mongolian Horde Tactics : All cavalry except knights, get a 30% bonus vs buildings, this includes cavalry archer.
Cost : 300 food, 300 wood.

Unique Unit :
Cossack : Light Cavalry unit, good against buildings, and Infantry. Throws spears, at short range, does ranged hand damage.

Imperial Age
Unique Technology :
-Peasant Armies : Infantry are created 30% faster, and are 30% cheaper.

Unique Unit :
-Elite Cossack.

Unit Stats :
-Cossack :
Health : 130
Attack : 10
Range : 3
Cost : 80 gold, 100 food.

-Elite Cossack :
Health : 150
Attack : 14
Range : 4
Cost : 90 gold, 100 food.

I only added what would be unique to this civilization, they would also get most of the regular technologies and units.

The unit they would get are :
-Longswordman.
-Halberdier
-Crossbowman
-ELite Skirmisher
-Heavy Cav Archer
-Hussar
-Paladin
-Camel (I'm not sure about this one)
-Onager
-Siege Ram
-Heavy Scorpion
-Trebuchet

Ships:
-War galley
-Fast fire ship
-Demolition ship
-Trade cog
-Fishing ship
-Transport ship

The russian building set would probably be North European.

Excellent.

They should include the camel, but not the heavy camel. They did have some connections to the Mongols, so they should get the camels, but not the heavy camels since they didn't really go too much into that. Even up to today, Russia is known to be more involved in European affairs rather than affairs in their own continent.

You should also specify what unit would be able in the stable. I get the point that Scout Cavalry will appear in Dark Age, but does that mean that in Feudal Age Knights will appear and the light cavalry upgrade will appear? Also, when will camels appear?

If so, then would the cavalier upgrade appear castle age, and the Paladin in Imperial?

Other than those few things, this is really awesome. Especially since this seems to make them a Cavalry civilization.

About the cavalry, the scout cavalry is enabled in the dark age as well as the stable, but from there the improvements and other units are all available in the age they would normally be.

I would play the Russians, if they had this type of references.

With the Scouts being available at the dark age, they will be able to explore the map much quicker than the rest. Also, Scout cavalry is more resistant than simple militia, making them good for rushing.

That's exactly what I had in mind; a fast exploring and rushing civilization. After all Russia was a large country that needed a fast mobile army to defend it's borders.

Definately, after the fall of the Mongols, Russia was very united. They expanded rather quick, and became a strong empire in no time. Well, they included the Mongol campaign, making the Russians seem rather weak, but since they expanded the timeline in the conquerors, then this Russia is actually very acceptable.

A Russian Civ I made a few years ago:

THE RUSSIANS

NOTE: I've done some historical researching on Eastern European civilization that existed during the European Medival period. Thise civ interacted with Byzantine, Turks, French, English, Japanese, and Tuetons.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Civ type: Trade and Cavalry
~Techs Russians lack: architecture, thumb ring, gold shaft, two man saw, crop rotation
~Units Russians lack:arbs, hussar, camel, heavy camel, hscorp, seige ram, seige onager
~Buildings Russians lack:bt's
Civ Bonuses:
* Stable techs and upgrades are ½ price
* All units +1/1 armor castle, +1/1 imp (for a total of +2)
* fish traps harvested 20% faster
TEAM Bonus:
* No tribute taxes
Russian UU(1):Bogatyr
(Standard/Elite): Cost: 100 F, 70 G
atk: 16/18
arm: 4/5
P.A: 2/3
hpt: 60/80
~Special: Similar to a Paladin, it is heavily armored and carries a mace or hammer or axe.
~unit type: cavalry w/ bonus vs other cav excluding camels and mams
upgrades=
armor: Scale, Chain, and Plate Barding
attack: Forging, Iron Casting, blast Furnace
speed: Husbandry
HP: Bloodines
Historical Significance:A Russian bogatyr ("brave knight") derives from the Khazar word baghatur. These knights of the prairie held the infidels and Muslims out of Europe for a long time and managed to keep Russia Christian. More heavily armed than western European knights. They carried in addition to lance and sword, a battle axe, mace or hammer, bow and arrows plus a case of short throwing javelins. From the poem "The lay of the host of Igor" is a description of Prince Sviatoslav's attack on the infidel Kumans who raided southern Russia regularly. "This prince of Kiev held (everyone) in fear and awe, for, as a tempest, his powerful regiments and his Frankish swords defeated and attacked the Kuman lands. They trampled under Kuman hills and ravines, made turbid Kuman rivers and lakes, dried out Kuman streams and marshes. Like a tornado, he seized Khan Kobiak from amongst his great iron regiments on the shore of the Azov sea bay. And Kobiak fell in the city of Kiev, in the hall of Prince Sviatoslav. Now the Germans and the Venetians, the Greeks and the Moravians sing the glory of Prince Sviatoslav."
Lodya Russian UU(2):
Lodya (standard/Elite): Cost: 175 wood 80 gold
atk: 15/20
arm: 0/0
P.A: 4/4
Hpt: 250/ 275
~unit type: ship
upgrades=
armor: careening and dry dock
attack: fletching, bodkin arrow, bracer, heated shot, chemistry
speed: careening and dry dock
special: it’s like a tower of the sea, it has a slow attack and movement, but its large range enables it to protect a late game fishing fleet from small raiding parties, ideal for protecting your late game fishing fleet. It fires 3 arrows. It is bad for raiding because of its slow ROF and movement speed. It fires normal arrows and does very little damage to buildings
Historical Significance: These sturdy ships (Lodyas) were used by the Russians on the Volga, Don and Dnepr Rivers plus the Baltic, Black, Azov and Caspian Seas from about 800-1250 AD. In 907 AD the duke of Kiev, Prince Oleg Orvarddi attacked Constantinople with a fleet of 2000 of these ships and 80,000 warriors. Prince Oleg forced the emperor to sue for peace and gained a valuable trade treaty plus 1,500,000 grivnas ( worth in todays money approx. US $35-50 million) in tribute. Oleg demanded that they should give to the. troops on the two thousand ships twelve grivnas per bench, and. pay in addition the sums required for the various Russian cities: first Kiev, then Chernigov, Pereiaslavl, Polotzk, Rostov, Liubech, Novgorod, Pskov, and the other cities. In these cities lived princes who were vassals of Oleg.
Vera(faith) Russian UT:
Cost: 650 F, 400 G
benefits: monestaries 20% faster and monks move 20% faster, monestaries 20% cheaper and faster built
Historical significance: After Russia was converted to Christianity, many people became saints and many churches were erected. The first saint of Russia was Saint Olga.
Russian UTT:
benefit: every house you have within 15 tiles of a castle slowly gives you gold.
Historical Significance: The Russian princes were very effective when collecting taxes. They were able to collect enough money to tribute to the Tartars and still put some away for their secret army that would ultimately liberate Russia.
Wonder: Kremlin
Historical Significance: Yeah, you can figure this one out for your self.
The russians have a pretty full tech tree and i think they might be kinda too powerfull. The Bogatyr can easily be taken down by a pike, but its huge attack makes it a good unit to wipe up non infantry units quickly(imagine it with the persians team bonus).
