Inspired by these two threads:

What do you think about a Re-make of Age of Empires 2?

AOE4: AOE1 Remake Ideas

What I'd like to do is launch a GROUP PROJECT for anyone on the forums to join. This will be a complete overhaul and remake of the first Age of Empires. Not only a remake, but an overhaul. What does that mean? Well that means we will go deeper into historical gaming than any game Ensemble has yet produced. We will update AOE1 to modern standards of gameplay as well. Each civ will be unique and fresh and most of all historically accurate.

[JPEG, (162.69 KB)]
[JPEG, (334.64 KB)]

What each project member will do is choose 3 civs from the list below to design as he or she sees fit, within the guidelines of the game as I will set up. What you will do then is research each civ to the best of your abilities, fill out the form I provide here and post it in this thread. Be careful not to be too verbose in your design because the forum seems to not like large posts. When everything is done and all civs have been profiled, I will gather everything together and make a giant new thread releasing the game design to the world.

This thread will be for strictly signing up for civilizations to profile (and then posting your results) and for discussing gameplay mechanics of the game and civs. What we want to do is stick to history and stay away from mythology and religion, except when dealing with Temples and Healers/Priests.

I fully expect this to last months, but that's not important. What's important is we all have fun making this and learn more about game design, history, and how they both fit together!

-------------------------
Okay, first, the uber LIST OF CIVILIZATIONS! Choose three from below you'd like to profile (first come first serve). *Note, please choose Vanilla civs first, then move on to the expacks (don't everyone try to gang up on the Greeks and Romans):

Vanilla: "Age of Antiquity: Dawn of Civilization"
- Assyrians :: Mythos_Ruler
- Babylonians :: Empror
- Egyptians :: Cassador_Chris
- Etruscans :: Brocktree101
- Hebrews :: Yamato Take
- Hittites :: Empror
- Kushites (Nubians) :: Empror
- Minoans :: Mythos_Ruler
- Mycenaeans :: egel
- Phoenicians :: GatoFedorento
- Scythians :: Dieneces
- Sumerians :: GatoFedorento

Chocolate: Expack1 "Empires Ascendant"
- Carthaginians :: Yamato Take
- Gauls :: egel + Brocktree
- Hellenes (Greeks) :: Dieneces
- Iberians :: GatoFedorento
- Macedonians :: Mythos_Ruler
- Numidians :: Yamato Take
- Persians :: Mythos_Ruler
- Romans:: egel
- Samnites :: Mythos_Ruler
- Seleucids :: Hosko
- Syracusans :: Empror
- Thracians :: Dieneces

Rocky Road or Strawberry: Expack2 "Empires Besieged"
- Axumites (Ethiopians) :: skystrider
- Britons :: Egel and Brocktree101
- Byzantines (Eastern Romans) :: Empror
- Dacians :: Mythos_Ruler
- Germanians :: Brocktree101
- Han (Chinese) :: MudokonGod
- Huns :: GatoFedorento
- Indians :: Lord Iarune
- Palmyrans :: GatoFedorento
- Parthians :: Empror
- Sarmatians :: egel
- Yamato (Japanese) :: Yamato Take

-------------------------
Next, choose your Civ Bonuses. Bonuses are things like, "Archers +25% HPs" or "Farming 33% more profitable." Please, stick to realistic bonuses for your civs. Make them historically accurate, and again, bonus points to those who come up with original ethnic names for your bonuses.

Bonus 1 - Economic/Civic
Bonus 2 - Military
Bonus 3 - Any

--------------------------
After that, choose the units your civ will field in battle. The research part will be this: Choose units that your civ used in REAL HISTORY. For instance, the Babylonians did *not* use a Quinquireme. However, you can give them a "bireme" class ship for gameplay purposes. The fun part will be finding the NAMES OF EACH UNIT according to the civ you are profiling. For instance, a Greek Infantry Spearman is a Hoplite (hop*lee*tay). Bonus points to those profilers who can give each unit a unique ethnic (non-anglosized) name.

Out of the 33 unit types listed here, I'd recommend your civs have no more than 30 and no less than 20:

Villager Citizen/Peasant (jack of all trades, builder and gatherer)
Villager Slave (a quick gatherer, does not build)
Villager Colonist (a quick builder, does not gather)
Villager Merchant (land trader)

Infantry Militia (every civ; very first military unit; starts as clubman in Stone Age)
Infantry Spearman
Infantry Swordsman
Ranged Slinger (very first ranged unit; starts in Tool Age)
Ranged Skirmisher
Ranged Bowman
Cavalry Scout (very first cavalry unit; can hunt; starts in Tool Age)
Cavalry Spearman
Cavalry Swordsman
Cavalry Skirmisher
Cavalry Archer

Healer Priest
Spy/Assassin/Diplomatic Unit

Siege Stone Thrower
Siege Bolt Thrower
Siege Tower
Siege Ram

Ship Fishing
Ship Trading
Ship Light -> Ship Medium
Ship Siege(rare "super" ship)

Unique Civilian Unit
Unique Military Unit 1
Unique Military Unit 2

Hero 1 (every civ has at least one hero)
Hero 2
Hero 3
Hero 4 (few civs have 4th hero)

*Note: Chariots and Elephants are usually reserved as Unique Units.
*Note: Make Unique Units truly UNIQUE, SPECIAL, and ELITE. For instance, a Hoplite isn't unique (he's just a spearman), but a SPARTIATE is an ELITE form of hoplite that would work well as a UU.

--------------------------
Next, profile the buildings for your civ. The fun part will be, again, to find out ethnic-specific names for each one. Also fun will be to come up with truly special Unique Buildings (listed at the end):

Town Center (upgradeable with different features, like in Battle for Middle Earth II)
Government Building (researches unique techs and "uber" post-Imperial techs, plus trains Unique civilian unit)
Market
House
Temple
Storehouse (gather wood, stone, and gold)
Mining Camp (generates gold like AOE3's Plantation)
Granary (gather food)
Farmland
Livestock Pen (like AOE3)
Outpost Tower
Palisade Wall
Palisade Gate
Stone Wall
Stone Wall Tower
Stone Wall Gate
Emissary (build at Mercenary camps to train mercenaries)
Smith (armory technologies)
Barracks (infantry)
Archery Range (ranged)
Stable (cavalry)
Siege Workshop (siege)
Naval Yard (ships)
Citadel (fort - build limit: 1)
Academy (trains Unique military units)

Wonder (give it a name and a unique bonus)

Unique Building Economic/Civic
Unique Building Military
Unique Building 3 (only a few civs have 3rd Unique Building)

------------------------
Lastly, choose the Unique Techs for your civ. You get one Unique Tech for each Unique Unit or Unique Building in your civ's profile. For instance, if you have 2 Unique Units and 1 Unique Building, then you get 3 Unique Techs.

Unique Tech 1
Unique Tech 2
...
Unique Tech 6 (Max number, based on max number of UUs and UBs)

-------------------

Don't worry about getting the "format" right. You don't have to do things IN THAT order. You can also easily copy/paste the lists provided above and work from there.

Alright, the floor is now open. Once someone completes his/her 3 civs, that person may then choose 3 more to complete! We have 30+ civs, so lets get going!

Miscellaneous Notes:

1.) Ages: My proposed Ages are:

1 Stone Age
2 Geometric Age or Tool Age
3 Bronze Age
4 Iron Age or Imperial Age

(5) Post-Iron or Post-Imperial unlocks uber Techs (unknown yet)

2.) Civ Uniqueness: If you want to make your civ a little more unique, try something like this: Let's say your civ historically is heavily infantry, with only a few instances of cavalry being used. Feel free to make your civ completely cavalry-less (except for the Cavalry Scout) even if you have a name for a cavalry unit at hand. This is just an extreme example.

3.) Heroes: Feel free to step into Myth for heroes if history does not provide suitable examples for your civ. (I suspect Greece and Rome won't have any problems here, as history gives us dozens of real-life heroes to choose from). Heroes have bonuses like: "Within LOS: All spearmen +30% attack" or "When garrisoned: All buildings +20% Armor or HPs" or "Attack Bonus: +25% vs. Enemy Cavalry" - things of that nature.

4.) Upgrading Unit lines: I encourage multiple upgrades to unit lines that change a unit from one thing to another, like AOK. Examples from AOK: swordsman > two-handed swordsman > champion, etc. spearman > pikeman > halberdier

It's okay if few if any of your unit-types have an Upgrade Line. They can and will be "upgraded" with standard Smith/Armory techs, even if their names don't change.

4.) Ethnic Names/Languages: I know it's hard sometimes to find a language for a lot of civs. Sometimes multiple civs will use the same language, for example: Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Carthaginians will probably use Hebrew as a basis for their ethnic names and such, because we really have no idea how Phoenician and Carthaginian sounded.

5.) Militia line goes as such:

Infantry Militia - Clubman > Axeman > Civ Specific Unit

The Mycenaens are going pretty well, but Linear B is a bit of a pain in the @$$, since not all of it is known, and some has no direct equivalent, or is theoretical. If anyone has anything to say about it, post it please. If you don't, well, I'm persevering anyway.

Egel - Do the best you can, bud. You'll probably have to use Anglicized versions of the Mycenaean words quite a bit, which is O.K. It's cool that you're actually finding out about Linear B. It'd be cool for you to enlighten us as to what you've found about it.

Yamato - The Carthaginians look pretty cool. I have a few issues with the design (for instance, trading ships available in the Stone Age) but I think we can wait to pick apart each others civs until we have most of them done. Then we can polish each civ to a high shine. I'm sure you guys might have ideas/issues with what I put out as well. hehe

I am using anglicized versions, because Greek script is impractical.

Linear B, for everyone's information, is the writing saystem used by the Mycenaeans until around 1100BC where they declined, and found on ancient clay tablets in Mycenaean ruins. It is called Linear because it is a script as opposed to the heiroglyphic writing also found in ancient Greece, and B because it is similar to the Minaoan script Linear A, but very distinctly different. It was first decihpered and proved to be Greek in 1952 by Michael Ventris.

EDIT:I've uploaded a zipped .pdf file to the download section but you'll have to wait for it to process.

I finished my Hellenic civilization yesterday, although unfortunately I left it at home (I'm currently away living in my brother's house), although I should be able to post it at the end of this week, which will be Friday/Saturday depending on where you folk live.

Unfortunately, I had to reuse some terms from your Macedonian civ, Mythos (since they're both in Greek) - although when I found some alternative names for units, I changed names when I could. I was wondering if you could change the Macedonian cavalry scout to Hyppikataskopos, so that I can use Kataskopos - the reason for this is because I want the Greek scout to walk by foot.

Also, since the Carthaginians can use the Helepolis, can the Hellenes also? Or is this supposed to be reserved to the Seleucids?

A little bit about the Hellenes:
Their unique units are the "Spartiate Homooi" (Spartan hoplite) and the "Hieros Lochos" (Theban sacred band), both highly elite spearman. They have a good mixture of heavy (hoplita and ekdromos) and light infantry (sphendonotes and akontistes) - their hoplites even have Epaminodas' phalanx at their disposal. To make up for it, their bowmen and cavalry are weak - almost laughable compared to other civilizations.

Their bonuses include "Demos Kratos" and "Hoplomachia" - I'll leave you to it trying to figure out how they effect the game.

Edited the Macedonian Cavalry Scout to "Hyppikataskopos." It's cool that the Greek scout can be on foot. Use the Cavalry Scout for him, since that slot is a unit 'type', not necessarily a unit itself. Same goes for other units. You guys have a little latitude in how you use the 'unit types.' As long as the unit you put there fulfills the role of that unit type, then it works! For instance, if you have to you can use a Chariot Javelinist for the Cavalry skirmisher slot if your civ has that option (looking at Egel and his Mycenaeans here).

Speaking of the Mycenaeans, Egel, what about any kind of ram or siege ram? If you can't find anything, then it's possible to not give them any siege at all. That's completely fine. It makes our civs more unique that way. Maybe as a civ bonus (to balance them) all units have +10% siege attack or something. Just an idea.

As an update for me: I am starting some preliminary groundwork for the Minoans. They are an intriguing people; we know even less about them than the Mycenaeans.

I hope you don't mind, but I am going to have to use some hefty imagination for the Minoans. We know nothing about their warfare tactics and we've met with very limited success deciphering their Linear A written language. We have however a decent understanding of their economy and architecture, and pretty good guesses about their social structure.

The Mycenaeans apparently stormed cities with troops, and very occasionally, ladders.
You're going to need some imagination for the Minoans, we know even less about them than we do about the Mycenaeans. You might want to steal Labrys from me as the axeman upgrade.

Here is that .pdf
It's quite good. The newer greek symbols can be translated into Anglicised greek too, if you feel like it.

* A Female palace guard armed with a ceremonial two-headed axe, may also be trained from the Queen Mother
Unique Military Unit 2 - Bull Rider (Age 3) -> Royal Bull Rider (Age 4)
* Like a mini elephant, has high crush attack, inflicts trample damage. Will run amok if 60% damaged

I thought the Mycenaeans and Minoans would be near impossible to make, but you both proved me wrong. My one problem with the Minoans is that they always seemed to be a comparatively peaceful civilization, which might explain their small canon of military units.

I'm not sure what language the Minoans spoke, but I suppose the later Cretans spoke Classical Greek. If you know much about the language (or even Modern could do) then you could try translating the English names to make it more authentic. This is what I've done with some of the Hellenic units.

The Minoan language today is called "Linear A" or "Eteocretan." Eitherway we have yet to decipher their written language and we have no idea how it sounds to the ear either.

Yamato_Take, why do you always have to steal the ones i like?
(I deserve to do Hebrews, since I am one; and I deserve to do Carthaginians, since my Carthage game was so awesome)

But since that's not gonna happen, i'll make do with Byzantines.
Oh, and also give me Syracuse since I did 'em pretty well for my Carthage game.

Sorry Empror. I figured that if you were doing stuff you'd do Hebrews, and I guess I should just let you have them, even if I'm almost done.

If that's alright with Mythos and Empror, I'll just do the Assyrians.
