Topic Subject: Age of Epics - Fantasy RTS game
posted 09-07-08 11:45 AM EDT (US)
Special Thanks to Orowac, who designed almost the entire Elven, Reptilian and Dwarven races.

While I tend to ignore anything based in fantasy, I thought of this and decided to give it a try. I think that Age of Epics is good, and with your help I can make it better.

Age of Epics is set in a Lord of the Rings-type world, but it has its own storyline. There are nine playable races to choose from, each with its own UU structure and hero system.

RESOURCES AND THEIR LOCATIONS
Food - Animals, herd animals, fish, forage bushes, farms
Wood - Trees
Gold - Gold mines, trade routes
Stone - Stone quarries
Population - Town Centres, Houses

RACES
The nine races are divided two ways (Good/Evil and Order/Chaos)

GOOD/EVIL
The GOOD races are - Elves, Reptilians and Tamers
The NEUTRAL races are - Dwarves, Humans and Aquids
The EVIL races are - Undead, Orcs and Goblins

ORDER/CHAOS
The ORDERED races are - Elves, Dwarves and Undead
The NEUTRAL races are - Reptilians, Humans and Orcs
The CHAOTIC races are - Tamers, Aquids and Goblins

In this way, humans are the only race who are entirely neutral and have no natural alignment.

*Good races recruit from native tribes by paying the tribe. They recieve better native warriors.
*Neutral races recieve free, average native warriors by winning a tribe's allegiance. To do this they have to perform a task for the tribe.
*Evil races recruit from native tribes by enslaving them. This is free, but the native warriors are weaker.

*Ordered races generally prefer quality over quantity. Their soldiers are fewer but stronger than those of other races.
*Neutral races do not have a preference. They field normal amounts of average-strength soldiers.
*Chaotic races typically prefer quantity to quality. They have larger armies than other races, but their soldiers are weaker.

X-PACK - Age of Epics: Fanaticism
Age of Epics: Fanaticism introduces some changes to the Vanilla game. Four new races are present, each one now "Specialized", meaning they have only one trait. The new races do not have best units. Every race now has three unique boats, as well as two flying units.

RACES
All new races receive heroes from gathering a relic, with any unit, and depositing it in a Town Centre or House.
Unquiets (Specialist Good)
The unquiets are similar to the undead in that they are reanimated beings. However where the undead are all Skeletons and Zombies, the unquiets are ghosts and other, more surreal beings. They primarily fight for Good and against the undead, in the hope that they may return to their eternal slumber in peace.
UNITS
Heroes: Heroic Ghost
Units:
* Essence
Weak militia which is stealthy but has a weak attack. It can Spook enemies, causing them to walk in random directions for the duration of the power.

Has almost no HP, but a huge LoS and inflicts steady damage on all enemies it can see. Almost anything will kill it in no time at all, but it can prove useful.
* Aethereal
Melee ghost-like creature, moves slowly but quickly sucks the life out of enemies when it reaches them.
* Presence
A more powerful, ranged version of the Essence. Better attack and HP, but is no longer stealthy. Maintains the Spook ability.
* Shade
Like in the AoM campaign, shades are cheap, fast and invisible to enemies. They perform a one hit kill on most units, but die after attacking.
* Ghost Warrior
Powerful melee fighter who can be put in Ghast mode, where it damages everything in LoS, or Ghost mode, where it is like a normal unit.
* Undermine
While moving, it can pass through anything. When stationary, it materializes. Leave it over a building and when it materializes it will do huge damage.

Best Unit:
Icelander (Not like someone from Iceland)

Flying unit:
Spook

Boats:
Ghost Ship
Shipwreck

Voodoo (Specialist Chaos)
The Voodoo represent several different races, as well as some human members. They possess powerful magic and curses, and use very interesting tactics to get their way. Voodoo fight mostly to replace the empires of the world with a single, fairly chaotic society.

Hellas (Specialist Evil)
The Hellas are the denizens of hell, they mainly consist of condemed souls, demons, and warriors of the apocalypse, their main enemies are basically anything good or neutral, but especially humans.

Units:
Hero system: Heroes can be summoned for a set amount of souls you sacrifice at the unholy site.

Unique buildings:
HELLPIT:
For every unit you kill, a soul is trained for free in the hellpit. souls have no attack and cannot be killed, they can be captured, if brought to an enemy holy site, can be turned back into the soldiers they were for a small price.

UNHOLY SITE
replaces holy site, souls can be moved there and be sacrificed there, after a set amount of souls are sacrificed, a hero is spawned, there are 8 heroes to be summoned.

Heroes:
FAMINE
First Horseman of the apocalypse, has 50/50 chance of taking a soul without killing the enemy unit with "Scales" ability. costs 20 souls.
PESTILENCE
Second Horseman of the Apocalypse, can convert enemy units with "Crown" ability, costs 40 souls
WAR
Third Horseman of the apocalypse, has very powerful fire attack with "flaming sword" ability. costs 60 souls
DEATH
Fourth Horseman of the apocalypse, can transport all souls to his side with "Come And See" ability, costs 80 souls
LIGUR
Duke of Hell, has powerful fire attack, costs 100 souls
HASTUR
Duke of Hell, has powerful ice attack, units damaged with ice is basically the same as a frost giant in AoM. costs 120 souls
MEPHISTOPHELES
Hell's Ambassador to Earth, can take souls from enemy units without killing them. costs 140 souls
BEELZEBUB
Hell's ambassador to Heaven, can tear enemies apart with ranged "swarm of flies" attack, when not using ability, attacks with longsword, costs 160 souls

Units:
* Condemed Soul
Light milita, can only be trained by upgrading a soul unit, for a price, cost to upgrade, 25 wood
* Imp Bowman
Light ranged unit, good against ranged. Costs 50 food

* Foliot
light melee unit, good against cavalry, has spike attack, costs 25 food, 25 gold
* Hellhound
medium melee unit, good against seige, has "charge" ability, costs 50 food, 25 gold.
* Skeletal Catapult
heavy seige unit, good against infantry, has powerful "bone shrapnel" attack which damages units over a wide area, costs 100 wood, 50 gold

Flying unit:
Harpy

Best unit:
Deathlander

Naval units:
Charon Galley
Infernoship

Insectoid Empire (Specialist Order)
The Insectoid empire have had many battles with the elves to establish the dominant power in the forest. Their varied tactics and efficient spies proved a match for the elven magic skills and intelligence. Their domain is the eastern half of the great Northern forest, and it wouldn't be too difficult for them to conquer further.

RACE WARS
Every race, excluding Humans, has an arch enemy who they cannot ally with (except through the map editor). Their heroes and best units get a decent bonus against their arch enemy's units.

LIST OF ARCH ENEMIES
Elves - Insectoid Empire (Because of their Woodland Wars.)
Dwarves - Aquids (Earthen Dwarves dispise the Water-dwelling Aquids.)
Undead - Unquiets (Unquiets cannot rest in peace until the undead are stopped)
Reptilians - Hellas (Evil Hellas usually surface in Good Reptilian lands.)
Orcs - Tamers (Orcs and Tamers battle to decide who owns the wastelands separating them.)
Goblins - Voodoo (Voodoo require goblin bodyparts for some of their potions. Goblins require Voodoo pygmies for their minions to eat.)

THIS ISN'T FINISHED, AND ANY ADVICE OR SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME.

This sort of reminds me of Hailstorm's old Age of Fantasy design.

Ah. Didn't realise this had been done already. But still, mine is quite original.

Very good idea, but I would suggest more details in the civs and the UU's, for example:

Sacred Longsword
medium melee unit, causes lasting "purity damage" to all evil races

and so on.

P.S. How are the undead "ordered"? Have you seen any zombie movie where the zombies have a plan apart from "FLESH GET! FLESH GET!"?

P.P.S. What's an Aquid?

"This is the flag of a new country, flying from the Mississippi to the Pacific. The thirteen stripes of red and white still represent the thirteen colonies, but they run in a new direction, just as we must chart a new direction for ourselves. [...] God bless you, and God bless the Allied States of America!" -President Tomarchio, first president of the ASA. The flag that he is talking about is in my avatar. I will put some more detail on units soon.

The Zombies are only a part of the undead. In this game, the undead were made by a small group of living necromancers who brought back some dead bodies. Now the dead bodies can bring back more as well so they can grow faster.

If you bring back a skeleton (ie: a body which the flesh has rotted off), it will die within minutes because it has no mind. Because of this, skeletons are hooked up to a hive mind, which makes them all very ordered as they share one conscious.

If you bring back a freshly dead body, it will retain its old mind, but have significantly lower intelligence (basically it will become a zombie). Zombies can be ordered around but will not perform complicated tasks because they are so stupid.

So the undead are very well ordered except from their zombies.

Aquids are a confederacy of all aquatic creatures united.
posted 09-09-08 05:01 PM EDT (US)     7 / 22
What do you mean, Aquatic creatures, nonsentient ones like fish and Octopi? or mythichal creatures like mermaids and the Kraken?

I have some ideas for Elvish UU descriptions:

Units:
* Woodsman
Replacement for villager, harvests wood by growing trees instead of cutting them down. costs 50 wood
* Elven Archer
Light ranged unit, good against other archers. costs 50 food, 25 wood
* Sacred Longsword
Medium melee unit, good against infantry, causes lasting "purity damage" to enemy unit, which signifigantly lowers overall health limit. costs 75 food, 50 gold
* Oak Crossbow
Heavy Ranged unit, good against cavalry, costs 75 wood, 75 gold
* Expert Daggerman
medium melee unit, good against commanding units, has ranged "throwing dagger" attack, costs 50 food, 100 gold.
* Elf Commander
light commanding unit, improves the attack and HP of ajacent friendly units. costs 100 food, 75 gold, only 3 can be trained
* Ballista
Heavy Seige unit, good against Buildings, costs 100 wood, 50 gold
* Woodlander
Heavy Commanding unit, increases attack and speed of all adjacent fiendly units, lowers attack to adjacent units. costs 100 food, 100 gold

If there is any more ideas you need I can Help!

Aquids are nonsentient aquatic creatures, sentient versions of nonsentient aquatic creatures and mythical aquatic creatures.

Thanks for the elf info, I will use it. Except for the woodlander because the best units have their own type. If you want, can you do some other races like the Reptilians or Dwarves?
posted 09-10-08 02:03 PM EDT (US)     9 / 22
Here are the dwarves;

* War Hammer
Hero with weak attack, good against infantry, has special "hammerdown" ability which makes a shockwave around all adjacent units, including friencdly ones, costs 25 food, 25 gold.
* Slinger
light ranged unit, good against cavalry, costs 25 wood, 25 gold.
* Axeman
medium melee unit, good against cavalry, has special "throw axe" ability, but has to retrive axe from enemy's body. costs 50 wood, 25 gold
* Diamond Javelineer
Heavy ranged unit, good against cavalry, costs 75 gold, 25 wood
* War Mallet
heavy melee unit, good against heroes, costs 50 food, 50 gold
* Master Axeman
Heavy ranged unit, god against artillery, has "throw axe" ability but dosent need to pick it up to throw again. costs 75 wood, 25 food
* Rock Thrower
Heavy artillery unit, good against infantry, costs 100 wood

Best Unit:
Highlander
commanding unit, adjacent units get better attack and speed. costs 75 food and 50 gold.

Flying Unit:
Day-bat rider
Flying unit, good against all units, can drop stalactites on select units. costs 75 food, 50 stone.

P.S. I noticed you havent put my elvish changes into your post?

Thanks for the Dwarves. Some good ideas there.

What do you mean I haven't put the Elves in? Do you mean like given you credits beacause I will do that.

Sorry, I must have looked at it before you changed it.
But anyways, here are the reptilians:

* Lizard Man
light melee unit, good against cavalry, throws spears, can be ugraded to attack with poison. costs 25 wood, 25 wood
* Poison Spitter
light ranged unit, good against infantry, any unit damaged by poison would slowly lose health until they die. costs 50 food
* Chameleon
medium support unit, can be stealthed as long as it dosent go near town centers or towers, costs 50 food, 25 gold.
* Frog Rider
medium cavalry unit, good against seige, has passive "charge" ability, can run over infantry with a little damage to itself, costs 50 food, 25 wood
* Tame Komodo
Heavy support unit, adjacent friendly units get extra attack and health, has "charge", costs 75 food, 50 gold.
* Monitor Warrior
heavy Infantry unit, good against cavalry, Gains health by eating the bodies of killed units, IE, gains health by delivering damage. 100 food, 25 wood
* Big Tortoise
Heavy Seige, good against buildings, provides population room when trained (houses on it's back), costs 75 food, 50 wood

Best Unit:
Uplander
Commanding unit, nearby friendly units have more attack and speed, nearby enemy units lose attack and health. costs 100 food, 100 gold

Flying Unit:
Dragon
Heavy flying unit, has powerful fire attack and normal melee attack, gives enemy units "fire" damage, which is similar to poison attack exept Aquids are resistant to it.

Tell me if you need any more!

P.S. with the Unquiet civ, why dont you make "essence" another resource for just xpack civs?

"This is the flag of a new country, flying from the Mississippi to the Pacific. Thanks for the three races you have done so far. The essence would be good, but it is the name of the Unquiet militia and it wouldn't make much sense for the insectoid empire to have essence.

Anyway, if you want to be a bit more creative, you can design the entire Specialist Order race. Name it, name the units, describe the units, everything. But it has to be a VERY ordered race, whatever it is.

It needs one hero, one militia, one melee unit every age from age 2, one ranged unit in age 2 & 3, one siege unit, one flying unit and 2 boats.

Also, if you want, could you do the Insectoid empire?

Thanks.

Okay, here is my idea for the fourth civ in the xpack, i am open to constructive critism, and I know it will cause a complete minor civ overhaul Another thing, why are the insectoids chaotic if most insects are Social? i was thinking that maybe these could be the chaotic ones and the insectoids could be social?

Anyways, here they are:

THE HELLAS
The Hellas are the denizens of hell, they mainly consist of condemed souls, demons, and warriors of the apocalypse, their main enemies are basiccaly anything good or neutral, but especially humans.

Wow thanks a lot for that. I suppose the insects could be Ordered considering how an ant colony is so ordered.

In fact, Voodoo could be chaotic rather than evil, which would mean that the Hellas could be evil.

One thing though, can you make a Hella siege unit?

Maybe can you design the Insectoid Empire? Same as last time: 1 militia, 2 ranged, 3 melee, 1 siege, 1 flying, 1 best and 2 boats.

Sure, how about:

Skeletal Catapult
heavy seige unit, good against infantry, has powerful "bone shrapnel" attack which damages units over a wide area, costs 100 wood, 50 gold

I'll get back to you on the Insectoids as soon as I can.

P.S. What are you thinking about for the campaign?

P.P.S. Any help from fellow forumers wou7ld be appreiciated

Ok, thanks. For the campaign, considering you and me have done all the work on this so far, I was thinking 2 campaign heroes called Oisín (my real name) and Orowac. Oisín could be a tamer, and Orowac (or whatever you want to call him) could be whatever race you want.

Basically they travel all over the world and fight in the Woodland Wars (Elves vs. Insects), the Good vs. Evil war and lots of other conflicts. Whatever side they are fighting for, that is what their race would be for that scenario (eg. If they are fighting for the Dwarves, they train Dwarf units.)

And yes, we do need some other input from other forumers. Maybe we should ask in the main post or something.

Yeah, I guess I could be a commader elvish sacred longsword type thing, but I agree we should get oyther forumers comments too, I mean, we are the only ones who have posted for 13 posts!

But anyway, the campaign sounds good.

Perhaps the design would be easier to read if color formatting were used. Just a thought.

Ok, thanks skystrider. I'll put some better format in it.

And Orowac, I have an idea for the campaign start:

Basically, you are an Elvish commander who has taken some soldiers to attack the Orcs. You meet my camp, and then some Orcs come to raid it. Your guys help my guys fight and when you beat the Orcs, the mission ends. (You would play as the Tamers in this mission, but you could train some elf units).

In all of the missions, you still get some Elf and some Tamer units, no matter who you are.

sounds good, but one thing, the colour font for the Unquiets is so light that I can't read it, could you consider changing it to a smaller font?

I changed the colour, but I'm still not sure about how easy it is to read.

What can the maps / campaign storyline be? I have some map ideas, but not enough for a whole game.
