IceQuest

Author File Description

File Details
Version: The Conquerors 1.0c
Style: Role Playing Strategy
The flow of life in the world of IceQuest is dictated by the balance of the four natural elements: life, stone, fire, and frost. Recently, however, the wicked Ice Queen has risen to power, threatening to rupture this careful elemental balance by casting a spell of eternal winter across the land, with cataclysmic implications. This is no time for indecision... this land needs a hero. This land needs you.

IceQuest is a linearly structured RPG in which character progression takes the form of spells acquired throughout the game, as well as the accumulation of wealth (and how it is spent). Casting spells is done by deleting their respective pavilions, and you can purchase items by moving your king over his nearby flag whenever an opportunity presents itself. View the readme for specific details about the effects of the spells, and tips on how to succeed in this scenario.

Have fun, and good luck!

This certainly shows a lot of promise, and I'd be up for seeing any more from you. The map design is very good and the playability concept fairly engaging. However, why no hints?

I neglected to include any hints, although it would be fairly easy for me to go back in and insert some. I think I will do a few minor tweaks based on people's feedback, but I think that the scenario is mostly done.

If you ever have any inclination to play through and do a formal review, I'd love to hear anything you have to say

I will be sure to finish this and review. It'll just take some time as I'm not so free atm.

I've tried it for a couple of minutes and it's going well. One thing you should look into is the speed of the text. I play on fast so I find it annoying.

Another thing, don't put your README in a higher edition doc. I can't open it with my version and it's stupid to download a different program in order to allow me to read it. People should stick to the notepad or something similar. If you want some flashy README, produce an offline webpage or something, anything that everyone 'should' have access to.

I'll go ahead and put the readme into notepad - it's not essential at all, I just felt like I had a bit more to say about this scenario than I could reasonably fit into the description here.

As for the scrolling speed of the text - I would recommend playing it on normal speed if it the speed is irritating. I will probably go back and change that at some point, but it will be a pain to go through all of the dialogue triggers, so I don't want to do it right this minute ;)

EDIT:

I've been making some minor changes to this map, which I will continue to list under "Updates" in the description of the scenario. So for I have not altered gameplay, so don't feel pressured to download the file again if you have already.

IceQuest is an elemental adventure concerning an imbalance in the universal forces. The player has only two heroes, while being given a large number of soldiers over the storyline. This makes it feel more fixed force, as opposed to RPG. Unfortunately for me, this is one of the maps that crashes my game whenever I'm defeated :/
I also experience a couple of other random crashes, such as after saving. I'm not sure if there's something that might cause this, if you have any background triggers which could affect gaia units, please remedy this.

Playability: 5
IceQuest is a highly playable scenario. The game has many features to keep the player entertained in a variety of puzzles, defensive and good old hack 'n' slash gameplay.

Balance: 2
Initially very good, the escort mission however completely destroys the player's units, which were considerable at the time. Perhaps the use of jaguar warriors for the enemy is a bad choice, as they have a supreme attack bonus against infantry. It took me many tries to complete this section, even after taking the creator's advice and upgrading my units twice. Please improve this and ask me to re-review.

Creativity: 5
The spell and purchase systems are fantastic. Deleting a pavilion to cast a spell: ingenious. Some excellent triggerwork concerning things like transport ships, shops and quests.

Map Design: 4
The map is to a good standard, with thought clearly put into how it will look. There is some excellent terrain mixing and map copying present, the only complaint is tied into the balance, at no point is elevation used to give the player a helping hand, often the high ground is with the (stronger) opponent.

Story/Instructions: 5
The story is well-written and enthralling. The instructions are very clear and give the player all the information they need.

Additional Comments:
A promising scenario. If the balancing issues are corrected this will make a worthy download.
Friendman has proven himself to be more than competent at scenario design. Any more to follow looks to be very good indeed.

Poppey, thank you for your feedback and the generally positive review. Before being posted, this game had not been playtested by anyone other than myself, so I assumed that some sections would be too difficult. I will make the escort easier by replacing the jaguar warriors with long swordsmen.

As for your game crashing - I'm afraid I don't know what to say. Sometimes I experienced crashing while reloading after quitting the game, but I do not know what the cause could be. If anyone has any suggestions as to what may cause this, I would like to hear them so that I can attempt to remedy this issue.

EDIT:
I made the escort segment noticeably easier. If you ever feel like trying this game out again and playing through the whole thing, I'd like to hear what you have to say about the rest of the game

MechKing The game and the triggers are great.
But I can't still pass the blue enemies part :S

Mechking - are you talking about the part with the trade cart? If so, did you upgrade your troops at all at the Training Captain?

If you downloaded this scenario since I updated it last night and you still can't get past the escort, I may be forced to redo that part.

I just started playing further and found quite a lot of spelling and grammar issues. The dialogues from NPCs still go by too quickly even on normal speed. The crashing bug is caused by gates that have overlapping pillars. Check the gate near the middle and you can see that the shadow is very dark. Another thing that I notice is that the first story segment about the skirmish at the start is not realistic. I barely assisted them and they praise me for it, give me armor from their barracks, and obtain followers. That is too far fetched.

I will continue with it and give the review as stated before.

EDIT: The game crashes each time I load. I managed to get myself trapped by going in a tower and going out. I'll stop playing for now until you make an update so get to it.

Dtrungle - thanks for your feedback. I just fixed the overlapping gates and will upload the new file immediately. I am sorry that the bug hindered the game's playability, but hopefully it will be fine now.

I also slowed down many of the chats throughout the game. If you still think this needs more work, let me know. As for spelling/grammatical errors, I will do a sweep through the scenario next time I have enough time and check through all of the dialogue.

I hope you finish the game, and I hope that this will improve your opinion of it :)

EDIT:
I have deleted and rebuilt all gates to make sure that none were doubled up, but the game still seems to crash when I reload. I will keep looking for a solution, but for now I don't know what to say.
