Entry for the Minigame Contest 2012

The War between the Thravalkan and Hunarin kingdoms was swift and bloody, leaving shattered cities in its wake. The Hunarin had suffered disastrous storms, ruining their siege equipment and undermining their defences. The once-proud artillery batteries were silent as foes swarmed the countryside.

Only one last town stands in the way of total victory. Can the inhabitants hold out and break the hold of their foes on the land?

This map contains:

- A mix of Defend the spot and Build and Destroy game styles
- Minimalist yet elegant map design on a 25 x 25
- Soundtrack by Apocalyptica
- Minimal triggering: gameplay is defined predominantly by the initial setup and the player's actions
- Rapid, arcade style gameplay with immediate action

A challenge for every skill level; if the game is too easy, try increasing the difficulty and/or speed. If you can beat it on hard and fast, go for the fastest time, I managed about 5:00.

Resolution: 1280*1024

Quite fun, but not a lot of depth to it. You can win fairly easily on Hard, and not ever really feel that you might lose. There's some interest in finding ways to win as fast as possible, but ultimately shaving a few minutes off the winning time is always going to be less interesting than actually fending off a challenge.

The Last Siege of Hunarin is Popeychop's entry to the 2012 Minigame Competition. An arcade style defend the spot scenario, the minigame involves the player fending off waves of enemy soldiers whilst defending their small town.

Playability: 4
The minigame is an enjoyable scenario which provides players with a short escape into a new world and the story of an epic war between two nations. The gameplay is action packed as the enemy attacks rapidly and straight away, leaving the player no time to think about a strategy. The game is highly enjoyable but ultimately suffers from being way too short, even for a minigame. I literally completed it in five minutes and would have expected more from a serious entry to the minigame competition.

Balance: 3
The game has difficulty settings to help players and is full of action. The gameplay starts immediately with the first wave appearing within seconds. Players start off with a couple of soldiers and villagers but no houses, therefore theres no ability to train more. Therefore you have to think tactically as to prioritise building houses or attacking your enemy first. As the waves go on the enemy soldiers grow stronger and develop siege weapons. Overall while the games starts with a slight challenge, it is still very easy and once you've reach your population limit, which you may not even need, you can complete it within seconds. Even on Hard there is little challenge. The author states you can make it more challenging by trying to see how fast you can complete it, but then this makes the game so short it makes it seem almost pointless.

Creativity: 3
The game is well designed and the author is clearly experienced with the scenario editor. The design of the map is very nice and a number of trigger tricks are involved in making the waves of soldiers. However theres not really anything that sets this apart from your standard defend the spot minigame.

Map Design: 4
The map is design very well and looks quite pretty. The landscape surrounding the small town is beautiful. The terrain mixing is exquisite and the elevation is used effectively. The tree placement is nice and really makes the map shine. The town is literally comprised as a symmetrical circular wall with a siege workshop and barracks. It's a little unrealistic and lacklustre and almost spoils the beautiful design outside it. Creating a town on a minimap is hard but I feel a little more effort could have been put in to this.

Story/Instructions: 3
The scenario opens with a short introduction to the story with a short explanation of the ongoing war between the two nations and setting up the scenario for the player. Once the scenario starts the story stops and players are given a single instruction - destroy the enemy towers. A couple of hints are given to help the player achieve this objective but thats it. Once you win there a very short epilogue in the victory page and that it.

Additional Comments:
Overall this is an enjoyable minigame which has alot more potential in it. Popeychops is a promising designer that just needs to put a little bit more effort in to make the scenario really shine.

Thanks
Possidon
