Autumn 1683. City of Vienna.
The Ottoman Empire under Grand Vizier Merzifonlu Kara is encamped around Vienna in a siege that is approaching the end of it's second month.
The garrison of Vienna, comanded by General Starhemberg, is on it's last legs, suffering from hunger and fatigue as a relief force of 80,000 men from Poland and the Holy Roman Empire, under Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland, approaches to relieve the city from the Ottoman army of over 100,000 men.
What ensues is one of the great turning points in the decline of the Ottoman Empire.
This is my first proper scenario created so feedback would be great! I have also made this as historically accurate as I could while still keeping the gameplay entertaining. Enjoy :)

I took the liberty of adding a little note in the description, as the campaign requires AoK:HD and The Forgotten to work. |

"Siege of Vienna - 1683" is currently the most popular campaign ever released on the steam AoE2 platform, with 48,403 unique page views and 9,211 current subscribers, while its gone entirely ignored on AoKH. It was a refreshing playthrough and a nice callback to an earlier time of simpler scenarios without 8000 triggers or map designs adjusting the off grid placement of every tree in the world. I played on Hard, which most AoC vets will want to do, as its a bit on the easy side, which may appeal to the HD crowd.
Playability 4
The game presents a Fixed Force relief mission in which you lift a siege by smashing the encamped ottomans. I found it a quite enjoyable romp sweeping through the numerous but weak ottoman force. Surprisingly, being HD edition, there were no performance issues and the good map design helped playability by making pathfinding not a nightmare. On the topic of pathfinding, its a very minor point but there was a weirdly designed military camp that actually couldnt be walked through until some yurts were broken, due to their large hitboxes.
Balance 4
This scenario presented a well balanced game, although i do feel its more aimed at less experienced players, as on Hard i received more troops than were needed to accomplish the players objectives. The players force is sufficient to continue pressing forward, without feeling compelled to use lure tactics or stop and heal every moment. Even so, some micro to pull injured soldiers off the line will be needed as the turk guns hurt hard, and you cannot be too reckless.
It turned out i was able to defeat the ottomans far more easily than the author had perhaps imagined, having a large army while the final boss, as it were, was easily slain. Infact i had 119 soldiers remaining at the end, but i do believe i simply over-played the game; without constantly microing soldiers the losses will certainly build up. If you attack headon across the bridge, instead of luring the bombards out like i did, you certainly wont have this problem.
Creativity 3
Its a bit underwhelming here, with a lack of optional choices hurting replayability a bit, and a quite straightforward affair overall. I would have liked to see some optional objectives actually hurting the turk army, but skipable if one chooses. The finale boss battle was very underwhelming, infact i could even kill him without his guards noticing.
Map Design 4
Its a nice looking map, featuring many military camps that did a good job of conveying army encampments. The forests and countryside provided a pleasant canvass for spilling turk blood, and the city was fairly decent as well. Some minor flaws here are the berry bushes inside of woods showing their translucency outline;some houses are map copied together in a mash of symmetry with no rotations added.
Story\Objectives 3
The glaring weakspot of the scenario, first off the mission doesnt make full use of its interesting history. There is no intro, not a opening objectives screen with a bitmap, and you just jump right into the action. This is good for playability but unfortunate for those who like some historical flavor. The scouts section was almost empty and this being instead a comprehensive report on the situation would have gone a long way to alleviate the problems here.
The second problem, and probably the biggest issue, is the lack of explanations about objectives. You are expected to destroy turkish camps scattered about, but you only really know this because of LOS markers placed at each site. There is hardly an explanation why and what we are targeting, only a dialogue when each camp is destroyed successfully;its not clear what is need to break each camp either.
Final Thoughts: Its a good game, and i recommend a download and playthrough.[Edited on 02/12/17 @ 03:11 PM]
