Vane'rir is Lildbehr's entry to the 2015 Pretty Contest.

Authenticity: The map design fit the theme of a plague-ridden city quite well, and I was quite under the impression that I had encountered a truly unfortunate place. The general aura of death and destruction seemed to be what the author wanted to accomplish, and the apt use of sound effects as well as dialogues. Even so, some of the scenario seemed like it could have used a little more polishing in order to better convey the theme.

Creativity: To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a PTC entry set along the theme of a plagued city, and the map design, what with buildings on bridge pieces, smoke, and fire helped drive the point home. The entry seemed to take inspiration from settings in other fantasy works, but the author’s implementation of it was unique and distinct. I was also impressed by the system used where either a boat or a horseman could be used to explore.

Layout: The overall effect was quite nice, but I felt that the general design of the city could use some improvement. Several building combinations didn’t fit together very well, and although the map seemed like an excellent concept, some parts lacked a certain attention to detail that could have improved the score. The design was nevertheless impressive and used many of the new objects in the Forgotten Expansion in conjunction with the vanilla ones to excellent effect to enhance the atmosphere and map layout.

Technical skill: The use of sounds and triggers to make the scenario come alive were rather well-done, but some parts of the scenario held back the score here, such as ill-advised building combinations and a seemingly sloppy and rushed victory system that could have used some polishing.

Vane’rir is plague ridden city set within the devastated Red Lands. The river city is very similar to the real life city of Venice with rivers crossing between the buildings and bridges acting as walkways for the citizens. Vane’rir is a creative entry to the Pretty Town Contest that details a plagued city, complete with dying civilians and corpses scattered along the roads. The map also has a good design and a creative use of waterways and canals to allow boat to travel through. Lildbehr makes excellent use the bridges to create excellent walkways along the canals and blending them well with the town and buildings so they don’t look out of place.
Additional features from the HD edition have been utilised well such as the burnt buildings, fire and smoke objects and Slavic Building Set to create and immersive environment that realistically portrays the theme of a ravaged settlement. The atmosphere and interactivity is a particular highlight in this showcase scenario. The dying civilians and dead corpses piled up along the walkways show just how devastating the plague is and there’s lots of dialogue between characters in the city to explain the history of what’s happened. You’ve got brave adventurers coming to explore, doctors trying to offer help, undertakers taking away the dead and villagers of the town trying to live a norma life. The map design is detailed and well done with effective use of terrain mixing and elevation. Objects have been laid out thoughtfully and the use of the off grid placement tool has been used to some extent. There are one or two areas which looked a bit odd such as the mountain located within the city and surrounded by buildings but overall the whole scenario is very nicely designed.

Additional Comments:
Overall Vene’rir is a creative and well designed city which will inspire many with its creative achievements.

Thanks
Possidon
