I notice that a lot of scenarios now miss history because of Fantasy having almost endless variables. Well, you could try this:

Set a fictional story in a historical setting (i.e. The Last Samurai) or something like the life of a peasant as your story in some great hisorical battle. Add RPG/RPS elements into your scenarios.

Or take it from the point of view of the losing "team".

What I mean here is:
Make the scenario unbeatable (have possible objectives, but in the end you lose).
This adds a twist to the plot. For example:

The peasant rebels in France being crushed by Charlemagne. Make the heroes the bad guys!

Some sample objective for this scenario:
-Bring a Trade Cart carrying supplies to [Village] and re-inforce the town.
-Defend the town for [length of time].

then have yourself defeated and have the victory text in the loss Message, and therefore, the only way to win would be through cheating.

Or have a campaign that takes place in a battle, thus making the battle seem longer (like "The Nexus").

You can also help the player understand the characte more, like "The Mercenary". Malcolm Dunforth's character is explained so well in this campaign and we get an in-depth look at his feelings and personality. It makes you want him to succeed!

Just a small idea... maybe I'll add more later.

OR you could have a scenario where to win, you lose, and to win, you die. For example, a 2-scn campaign. If you lose, you actually WIN and go on to a second scenario showing the evil sweeping over your land :-)

It's good when agers mine their ideas instead of hiding them until a time when they use them in their own projects... although I have a few of those too ;-)

Good ideas! Keep 'em rolling!

Or take this idea for example:

The great Ghenghis Khan has asked General [name] to complete quests for him.

Quests could include:
-Looting places for resources/gathering resources (when they are scarce).
-Getting small villages to submit to the great Khan and receive tribute from them.
-Defeating a rival Mongol foe. (This could work well if you use an AI Script that would make Ghenghis' army attack a Mongol foe, at the same time as you).
-Training archers/soldiers

IDEAS FOR TRAINING:
-Cavalry Archers must hunt [number] of boars/deer (seeing as historically, this is how the Mongol bowmen improved their accuracy).
-Horsemen/infantry must learn what each "Flag Signal" means (Historically, there were Mongol flag-bearers which would signal to other soldiers what to do). You could do this by having a player move their unit to a location when a flag changes colour or is moved.

BACK TO OBJECTIVES:
-Help escort Ghenghis somewhere.

You could do a scenario where the player is not technologically advanced, so they must use strategy to defeat their advanced enemies. (Archers Elite Final did a good job for use of strategy (sorry I couldn't do all the symbols, Cerwin).

Have a scenario similar to ES' "The Triple Alliance" in the Montezuma campaign, where your allies betray you.

Have a Death Match scenario where it's a fast-paced B&D.

Have an FF scenario where you must raid villages and only increase your size of your army when you hire mercenaries, or recruit soldiers who submit to you.

More to come.

In my coming campaign, hero will have unexpected end

"Especially awe-inspiring is the fact that any single brain is made up of atoms that were forged in the hearts of countless stars billions of years ago... These atoms now form a conglomerate – your brain – that can not only ponder the very stars that gave it birth but can also think about its own ability to think and wonder about its own ability to wonder. With the arrival of humans…the universe has suddenly become conscious of itself. This, truly, is the greatest mystery of all." - Rama

Well, here's another one...

A GAME!!!
Believe it or not, multi-player games are fun. Running Man, for example is a fifteen minute scenario, where anything can happen.

Create small games for the players!

A race! (Like in ES HotA Contest Winner - Canute's Saga)
With more than one player, this can be awesome.
Or a Gladiator dome thing... maybe a capture the flag style? Football? Even a board game!

Another idea:
Magic.
Has anyone played 'Sacrifice'? You could set it up so that if you tribute [number] of [resource] to [player] (pereferably named "Summons") and you summon a unit. For example, tributing 600 Stone to the 'Summons' player creates a War Elephant in your stronghold/fort (etc.).

Hopefully I can think of more,

Change History completely...like in my next scenario which has

1.) The Aztecs driving back the spainiards from Mexico
2.) They travel to spain and conquer the Spanish lands

A Surprising end alltogether

Try these anti-history scenarios...its fun.

Yay! Anti-History! Those scenarios are few and far between and you gotta love em, if the story works.

...Reminds me of what i read about the Sewee indians who,fed up with terrible treatment by the English,in 1701 set sail for England in a fleet of huge Canoes in the hope of making a plea to the king/Queen. They had seen the English merchant ships always arrive from a certain point on the horizon and figured England wasn't that far.
They all died at sea.

Another one...

Have a scenario/campaign where the main character is not the hero! Too many campaigns have the main character being a super figure of power and might. Change it around. The main character(s) may have influence on other people, but wouldn't it seem like more of a struggle if you were just a peasant, rather than a Death-Bringing Warlord?

Have a multi-player relay-race! Monks can carry relics to one another and pass it off (by dying just as they reach the next Monk, maybe? ).

Have an RPG/B&D level, where you play one character and/or his/her friends. When you reach (for example) your base camp, you achieve control over it. However, whenever you leave to do a side quest, for example, or bringing your hero out of the camp, it changes ownership to another player ("Base Camp" or something like that). Every time you return, you again, achieve control.
This idea can be improved with the use of an AI Script. When you leave, the camp could act on its own, slowly building soldiers, and occassionally, attacking! Wouldn't it be interesting to be off on some side-quest while a computer player helps you complete your B&D quest?

MUSICAL SOUNDTRACKS:

Note: You should ask the authors (if the music is Copyrighted) for permission of use of the songs.

Some good Musical Soundtacks for AoK:

Henry V Soundtrack (CD)
Era 2 (CD)
The Thirteenth Warrior Soundtrack (CD)
The Planets (Composed by a Symphony, written by Gustav Holst a long way back) (CD)
Gladiator Soundtrack (CD)

That's just a few. Those CDs have awesome music. Classical music is under-rated.

I have enjoyed playing scenarios that have fantasy themes. Using characters and civs that are totally different than usual, like Orcs and Elves in The Swallowed Realm series of senarios, can be a nice change. As most historical events that would translate well to AOK have been covered. And that there are some new RTS games comming out (AOM & EE)scenario designers will need to add some unique features to there projects to make them attractive to veteran agers.
Add some humorous events to your project to break up the action. I really liked the "soldier to sheep trick" in the "Price of Destruction" series. Or the scene where Brittney Spears music is used to convince a prisoner to help his enemy (from same series I think).
There are still a few effect or themes that have yet to be seen. Designers just need to look "outside of the box"

You can also make good historically-themed scenarios, just don't use hstorical figures. Maybe about a few peasants and their local lord during the 100 years' war, and they just help some Franks in minor quests sometimes.

Anti-history can be very fun too. It would be cool to have a campaing starting where the Montezuma one left off in AOK:TC. Or one where the Europeans invaded Mongolia. You can also add bits to history; for example what if, after conquering Europe completely, Ghenghis Khan set sail for the New World? Or what if some Vikings that sailed to America decided to live there, and moved farther south and met Aztecs and Mayans?

This is exactly the way I wanted this thread to turn out. Everyone's putting their ideas and encouragement in. And besides that, I have another idea!!

Multi Idea:
Mangonel Blood this would be awkward... however, the game could speed up if you get the Mongol 'Drill' Technology.

Single Scenario Idea:
An endless RPG. I might work on this when I've finished LotR (in about a year ). You could set it up with looping triggers for the hero levelling up, enemies levelling up, re-creating enemies, dungeons and puzzles, about 150 side quests and endless gameplay. Meaning, the senario can last 2 or 200 hours. I would really enjoy this, but it would take so much work.

Campaign Idea:
The Life of Charlemagne.
Scenario Ideas for Charlemagne:
1-Peasant revolt
Key points: His brother Carloman abandons him, and he (Charlemagne) must crush the rebellion by himself.

2-Saxon Campaigning
Key points: Charlemagne began a number of campaigns against the Saxons and one almost all of them.

3-The Lombards
Key points: The Lombards were trying to assassinate the Pope in Rome. Charlemagne prevented them and stopped the Lombards from invading Rome. This interrupted Charlemagne's Saxon Campaigning.

4-Saxon Revolt
*NOTE: Download (or take from the AoC CD) 782 A.D. The Saxon Revolt. This will explain most of it. This one could take a while.

5-Holy Roman Emperor
Key points: Return of the Lombards, Charlemagne defeats them.

6-Moor Wars
Key points: Count Roland (under Charlemagne's command) was fighting off the Moors who were invading Spain. Roland died in the fight.

There are more scenarios for this campaign, but those are some ideas. Look at the ESCC Contest winners for more ideas.

I really need to see some humor in campaigns/scenarios. I really like the sheep attacking the wolf in Ingo Van Thiel's The King's Best Men(at least, I think it was in that campaign, the first scenario). I plan on making a lot of humor and funny scenes in the next scenario of my campaign, the lancaster chronicles. The chukonu and arbalest would make a good court jester, because of those little things that stick off of their heads, it looks a lot like the little caps you see on the jesters in television shows and movies. I love campaigns that have betrayal and family against family, they are just cool. I would suggest(if you havent played it yet) the Fall of Constantinople...that is one of the best scenarios ever, and is so well put-together that I was blown away. I thought that it was quality worthy of ES.

Top.

I hope SD Forummers are getting some ideas from this (or maybe even use one of them).

How about a scenario where you are only one unit, and you can only command units that are tasked to you (so you can't control them directly, only where they go).

Hmm...

RPG Fight system...

This is awkward, I'm thinking about creating a template (full) for this. Scenario Designers can then build around the idea.

What I would like to see is a Gladiator battle (multi) with wizards/sorcerers/warriors/witches etc. where you could raise levels until you die, at which point you start over. The winner reches [x] number of levels.

Or create the same thing in D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) format. Try creating a single-player like that.
