Topic Subject: keep the units garrisoned!
posted 02-21-03 07:21 PM CT (US)
I have a small problem....In the editor, I made a bunch of units garrisoned in a castle, and when I go to play, they're all standing around the castle! Is there any way to keep them garrisoned?

Well, I don't like to boast of my accomplishments.

Easy, build palaside walls aruond the castle, and when you want them ungarrisoned, use triggers to kill the walls.

Unfortunately, it is an intrinsic part of the AI and can't be changed.
The only units that will stay garrisoned are villagers (when there is an attack within a certain distance) and kings (the problem is keeping the kings OUT of the building, unfortunately that is another intrinsic partof the AI).

You're not "saying" anything, technically.

That is a good idea, except, use rotated-cliffs, and use triggers to remove them.

I think a way to garrison them and keep them garrisoned was developed about 2 years ago - try searching the forum. I could be wrong, but it might be an interesting experience anyway

Did you know that if a unit can't ungarrison due to walls or invisible cliffs, you would lose the tower AND the units.

If you mean that, I tried it a long time ago, but it didn't work.

Darkmaster and Elite Raider:
Yea, that was bogus, and does not work. I tried it fifty different ways to no avail.

Kevingamer:
Interesting...good test.

MrQuestionMan:
Perhaps Aro said it best, but here are some parameters for Unit Garrison that might help you achieve your game plot.

A) Unfortunately, we cannot task units with a trigger into buildings during game play (Transport Ship and Ram is possible).

B) The exceptions are the King unit, that does automatically seek to garrison inside a building, and Villagers will garrison when under attack.

C) Garrisoning units into buildings before test/play, and to *remain inside* during game play can only be done in the Player One Position and Gaia.

D) All other Computer Positions will eject or ungarrison units at the start of the game.

I tested the limits of this in the past, and this is what I recall from those test.

1) Gaia Units garrisoned into Gaia buildings will ungarrison upon capture by Player One.

2) Player One Units will remain inside until manually ungarrisoned.

3) Changing Ownership of Player One to Allied Player Units inside P1 Buildings will not eject the Units (P1 Building with Allied Units inside).

4) Changing Ownership of Player One Building to Allied Building with P1 Units inside will not eject P1 Units (Allied Building with P1 Units inside).

5) All other circumstances seem to eject or ungarrison the units right away.

Some interesting things can be done with the circumstances in the outline. That is all I can remember right now, but if you find anything that is contrary to this or that could be added, please let me know.
