I've noticed a lot of design teams cropping up lately. I support this, as design teams are a good thing, however, I see a lot of mistakes being made - as a person who used to run a design team, I know what makes one tick.

Firstly, don't just start a design team for the heck of it without any basis. Make a good site and some forums first, release a good project yourself, then advertise the team. People will be more likely to join then.

Note: Don't make more than one advertising threads on each Heaven. This is annoying.

Also, don't have more than one leader/moderator when your team is just starting out, there's nothing worse than having more leaders than members.

Secondly, when your team is just getting started, don't be too picky about who you let in. I'm not saying just any old newbie should be let in, but don't set your standards too high. Build up a strong member database before becoming too exclusive.

Thirdly, design for a few games (to start with, anyway). You'll get a bigger member database and be more sucessful.

Fourth, don't create "hollow jobs". For example:

  • Trigger Engineer
  • Map Expert
  • Story Writer

A good designer should be able to do all of these things - it's pointless having jobs like these. Most sucessful design teams have only one position: Designer.

Lastly, tell other design team leaders to come to your forums and have a look. The more high profile members at your forum, the more your team will grow.

And as a final note, if a member of yours has been banned at HG, then ban them from your team. They will bring a bad reputation to you and may lead to the downfall of your team.

A most excellent post, Dr Lorenzo. While I agree that they are all good points, I must confess that EP is guilty of ignoring most of them at some point.

-Fiyih had no good projects out when he started the team (I have RRv2, campaign 1488)
-we don't have a site, despite all our efforts otherwise
-we used to use your 'hollow jobs' back when Fiyih was around. we finally switched when I took over
-we used to let in teh n00bs, back in fiyih's day. we are now a little more strict
-and I'm sorry about the threads. I wasn't around when the first one was here, and the second was Fiyih's doing. We kinda had to let it die, and create a new one when he left. what's the point of having a thread that has no accurate data in it?

Rather interesting, for a team that has survived this long, eh?

For some reason you are correct in everything you just said.

You also need a good leader. Without a good leader, the team will go nowhere.

Take a look at Punk...when Ex-T started to be more absent, it also started going downhill...and now it's gone or so.

Watchwood fiyih did realease a demo of era's first team project. It's somewhere in the blacksmith. I'm not sure really if era's more strict. More strict maybe in member's memberships, by enforcing activity from everyone. And era's survival was thanks to about 5-7 members who hung around and waited for there leader's return, which in reality never happened. But i guess it was for the best.

An important piece of advice is: NEVER START A DESIGN TEAM WHEN YOU ARE A NEWBIE YOURSELF. Gain some experience, both with the editor and with the community. Preferably, you should have a finished work already in the blacksmith with a 3.8 rating or higher. That shows people you are a competant designer, and you will be more likely to get members. If you start a "join my design team!" thread, while on the same page there is a thread of yours asking where to find the gold in the editor, then no-one will take your team seriously.

Thank god someone finally made a thread about this. And what Fadawah states is very true. For example, Grey Raid Productions, and what was the other one, that got like 3 posts, before it got closed..... oh well. Just to make my point.

I admit it, Fiyih was a n00b. His map was cheap, and whenever I talked to him on MSN he always proclaimed himself as better than most people here. Then he would brag about how Farasin, (The retarded project Era had when back in the Winter-Spring months) was gonna get a 5.0 after he worked on it.

@Colo

That doesn't strike me as something Fiyih would say, but I trust you...

I would like to see a log of some of those conversations chatlogs, just out of curiousity

@Lorenzo

Godd points, all.

Well, since my design team is successful in SWGB. I'll just wait to announce it here. (Link is in my sig BTW.) We've actually released a couple of campaigns and a few mods.

I'll just wait to advertise like ussual.

LOL, irony.

ScnPunk really wasn't a team though. It was more a familiar flag that members released scenarios under. I don't think I ever worked with any of the other members of Scnpunk on anything, ever.

@DarckRedd - How in the world do you want me to bring back a chatlog from March? I don't save them. it's uselessly retarded, stupid, and it wastes precious comp space. And he did say all that.

Most of the largest scenario design groups - like Woad, ScnPunk, DGDN, members there only design alongside each other, not together.

Both of those happen at EP. We got a few (too many, IMO) things on the role as a team, and everybody has their own projects going, and usually is help others with that. It works out, though.

Bendak: We already do.

Funny how all the big teams here try to go into SWGB but never can.

Right now the big teams in SWGB is: RS, RC, Pariah (dying), and GRP.

But who cares. Anyways, good comment or whatever, you should give a link to the guide on making a design team, I'll go get a link.

Edit: Here is the link: Guide to maintaining a design group!

I would have created a design team, but this boom of design teams means that no one would join if I created one (except maybe 1 other person).

I guess I can wait...

It is also important to note that bigger is not necessarily better. A team should look for quality designers, not a great quantity of them.

It's also a waste of time being in a scenario deisgn team if the whole group get less done than one individual would working alone...

I have a question, Lorenzo, why ban a person from the team if they were banned from HG? If they design well, they can be kept unless they misbehave at the team forums.
posted 07-25-04 07:50 PM CT (US)     29 / 60
If they were banned from HG, it's a pretty fair bet that they will harm your team in the long run.

How?
posted 07-25-04 08:28 PM CT (US)     31 / 60
its simple
1) they can't post at hg
2) they can't upload projects to hg
3) #2 means that they may either find another place to upload (not good for hg) or they just won't bother
4) #3, option 2 means that they may corrupt the team with their own laziness, leading to even less projects, or they'll be kicked from the team, which may or may not be a good thing depending on the skill of the person

its not worth it in the long run to have hg-banned people on your team

Bah.

Lol, thats exactly the point of Grey Raid Productions. They have like 30 members, and have no standards to join.
