Honourary Hosts: fr steve, Taichud

Moderator for Eastern Europe: Hockeysam18
Moderator for Southern Europe: Scipio
Map Makers: Popeychops, Jetkill Fastmurderer

The game has begun but you can still join it!

The game started in 1200 AD, and occures from Western Europe to Ural/Caucasus, and from Iceland to Maghreb. Here is the map:

France

***

How to play?

First, you must choose a nation. All coloured nations can be chosen, but you can only choose one. Some nations aren't totally independent or united but you can still choose them since they historically could have become independent during the Middle Ages and remain interesting enough to deserve to be played separately.

You cannot choose a nation in white. The reasons are multiple: rather unexciting, not at all or almost not a united nation, no historical logic chance to forge an empire in 1200, etc.

Once your nation is chosen, the game begins. You will be given a summary of what just happened in your nation in 1200 and useful information about it. Then, you will have to write some actions you wish to do in your nation, as if you were its ruler. These may be administrative reforms, recruitment of an army, invasion of a country, suppression of insurgency, trading, construction of a war fleet...

Every time you do important actions, I, the Host will write the consequences of your action, which can be various. Although I'll surely be a bit subjective, these consequences will rely on historical and logical probability.

The Host will often describe events happening in the world, like a non-playable/non-played country invading a territory or suffering from an invasion, riots happening in your country, a revolutionary invention, etc. It will be up to you to decide what to do depending on these events.

Once enough actions are done, or if all players have done actions, a year will elapse, and new events will occure, following what happened during the new year in real history.

The game will end:
-if the game lasts long enough to reach year 1492 (generally admitted to be the end of the Middle Ages);
-when only one religion remains and if all members of this religion aren't warring;
-when countries forming an unbreakable alliance have vanquished all other players and playable countries.

Additional rules

1) All playable nations don't require a player for the game to begin. Nevertheless, the more you are, the nicest it will be!

2) Even when the game has begun, you can still join it.

3) The Host IS the master of this game. All he says must be taken in account. However, if he makes a statement and more than 50% of players think the Host is doing wrong, he will revise his statement.

4) This game is a fun but historical game. Fun means you are not forced to follow History to perform your actions and may do things that didn't happen in history. Historical means you cannot do things that History would have never retained. This is linked to logic. For instance:
-when a battle occures, size of armies, equipment, historical tactics (if there are), etc. will be taken in account;
-when you invade a country, the might and historical context of the country you invade will also affect your invasion (religion, feeling about the invader...). This may depend on what you did before though, so the Dungeonist won't necessarily be harsh with you.

5) There are things you obviously cannot do: using anachronistic inventions, conquering a land off the map, invoking godly powers, using magic... If you doubt about the plausibility of an action while I accepted it, please tell it.

How about no technologies invented more ten years before real history?

6) If you are not sure about the plausibility of an action you wish to do, you can tell me so that I answer you or make researches about it. The Dungeonist may however not find an answer to your question.

7) You must talk in 3rd person when doing your actions, like this: 'The king does...', 'Poland sends troops over...' or even 'Der König attacks...'.

8) You must bold your actions such as I do.

9) If more than 50% of players think the game is being unfinishable, they may vote in order to end the game.

10) A defeated player may re-play as another playable nation if he wishes to.

***

Now, enough rules! You can choose among the 45 coloured nations on the map. Again, remember some of them aren't united yet, so I may ask you what entity of the nation you wish to play initially (Powys in Wales, for example). It will then be your job to unite all other entities, which is easily feasible.

If you don't know where's a country or want more info about it, please tell me and I'll tell you what you need to know.

And now, let the game begins!

I intend to continue this game, but I could do with a second helper to write events for Southern Europe. If I can't get one, then the Italian states will have to be suspended until we can get an impartial writer.

I could switch to Norway and mod all of Southern Europe, specifically Italy and Spain. I think Hockeysam mods Northeastern Europe, so I think I would still be under his jurisdiction.

Before I switch though, can I hear Norway's stats and a brief overview of what's happened?

EDIT: I could also mod The HRE since both Popey and Sam border it.

When you try to build factories and train elite soldiers for your standing army I don't think it's popey that is to blame for your decline.

It would be cool if we would have some kind of program that could keep the data of a country. It would make this game a lot more consistent.

The Duke of Brabant will not join the crusade nor any other ventures East for now. He's occupied with besieging Zeeland. Once they submit and order is restored, he will be able to commit to other things. However he will not stop any of his subjects who are not levied in his army to join the crusaders.

Den Cekke, that sounds incredible! I'm planning on running one of these starting at 500AD later on, so maybe we could use it for that as well?
Quoted from Fr_Steve
KINGDOM OF NORWAY

Commander Scipio

Current leader: Sverre Sigurdsson
Capital: Bergen
Religion: Catholic Christianity
Population: about 250,000 inhabitants
Main language: Norwegian
Diplomacy: Civil war between the king's and the Clergy's partisans ; Pope's interdict

The kingdom of Norway is living a dark period: because of the dubious takeover by Sverre Sigurdsson, so-called illegitimate son of Sigurd II, a civil war broke out between the Birkebeiners, supporters of Sverre and enemies of the richest classes, and the Balgers, supporters of the Clergy and privileges. You must hurry to stop this war which is ruining your country, exposing him to invasions. Indeed, even if your relations with your Swedish and Danish neighbours are good, they could worry if the civil war was still growing. Moreover, your recent and drastic reforms towards the ecclesiastical power didn't only annoy the Norwegian clergy, but also the Papacy itself. If you wish to redeem yourself, you must hurry and reaffirm your power. But do not forget your maritime empire. Some years ago, you had to punish the duke of Orkneys for his betrayal. And the kingdoms of Scotland and Mann could be interested by your archipelagos. React, or your kingdom will collapse!

Note for Jetkill Fastmurder I had a diplomatic message for you in the old thread awaiting reply. It is below.

Bishop Albert receives new Danish recruits and sets them training as well (totaling 750 in winter training). There should hopefully be enough armour and weapons, considering what the recruits brought themselves, but if any men are needing supplies new advanced weapons and armour are commissioned.

Albert awaits the winter solstice praying for success.

Just to point out that quite a while ago Norway reverted to Catholicism and reconciled with the Papacy. It was about the time that King John of England was killed, causing the Northern Church to fail.

The King of France awaits response from his advisors regarding what needs to be done to stabilize the royal domain and Champagne and also awaits reports from his diplomats and scouts regarding the strength of Poitou and Aquitane, as well as their rulers' pre-revolution relations with (the then-duke of Champagne) Theobold.

I had already replied in post 1044, but here's the reply anyway:
Otto responds that all errant-knights in his Empire are inducted in the Order of the Forlorn Hope. Otto says that once he completes his affairs in Bohemia and Burgundy in the summer, he will join the Crusade himself in full force in 1209, and hence wants to conserve as many men for the effort as possible. As a sign of continued support for the Order, Otto sends 50 suits of heavy brigandine with partial plate, 50 heavy crossbows, and 100 halberds to the Order from this month's production.

That would be cool Hockey. It's a lot of data to process though. I think my program should not allow the hosts to alter the data(or only with permission) but instead they could alter certain variables. For example they would be able to change urban growth to very low, low, medium, high or very high after someone posted an action about his cities. Or maybe the program can generate random events like famine and rebellion. I'd have to see what's possible.

Scipio, I demanded the King of Naples surrender his crown and Vassals to me, and order his armies to disband in post 1014.
You also have to decide how much the city will suffer, as the Pope has demanded it be sacked utterly, while the King of Italy has restricted his men to the property of the executed nobility.

France
  • The King of France is informed that the Royal Domain has fallen under his control, almost as if the transition of power had been regular. There is a demand for national unity amongst the nobles of France, or at least, what is left of it.
  • Whatever relations with the Duke of Poitiou and King of Aquitaine were held before your ascent to the throne, recent events have soured them utterly. The designs of the French nobility for supremacy over the lost vassals is well known, and the presence of a King is threatening to both. While there is no hostility, there is certainly no love.

    England
  • Gloucester greets their new governor with open arms, having an Englishman once again sets the hearts of the people at ease. What a boon for the Welsh, to cement their friendship with England by the release of an unruly people. It is an ill omen for Scotland, whose people struggle to keep law and order over the frontiers of the realm.

    Brabant
  • The people of Zeeland, in fear of a Brabantine sack, open the gates of the towns to the besiegers. All titles, ceremonial or otherwise, are restored to the Duke.
  • The Count of Flanders writes to the Duke of Brabant, claiming a necessity of an alliance of all the states of the North sea, in order to resist aggression by either of the continental powers, France and the Holy Roman Empire. Denmark and England might be looked to as potential allies.

The King of France sends to Poitou and Acquitane, inquiring if there is any way that the rebel vassals would reunite France without open war.

The king also awaits the reports of his scouts regarding the strength of the rebels. He is hesitant to begin a campaign without at least a general notion of Poitou and Acquitane's strength.

The Brabantian people are rejoiced with the fall of Middleburg. The men and war ships drawn from nearby cities are disbanded while a small Brabantian garrison is placed in Middleburg. The king of Zeeland is stripped of his title and on trial by a counsel. His punishment for unlawfully taking a royal title and dishonoring his lord will be banishment.

The duke of Brabant then starts reforming Zeeland for Brabant to gain more naval power. Middleburg will be turned into a city for trade and shipbuilding while shipbuilders from Scandinavia, North-Germany and Flanders are invited to come and live in Middleburg.

The Duke of Brabant is interested in an alliance with Holland and Flanders to form a united front against the neighboring powers. But instead of an alliance he proposes a league with the duke of Brabant to lead it. Brabant has proven to stand out against foreign intrusions and its fast growing power has proven Henry's leading capabilities.
Henry suggests that while Flanders has been given a lot of independence because of the weakened French king, it won't be long before the French king will reconquer his lost land and will be able to turn his attention back to Flanders. If Flanders is part of the league, the duke of Brabant can prevent that from happening and help Flanders gain its independence from France.
A league would also benefit free trade and bring prosperity to their region. With a mere alliance they might end up protecting their own trade and taxing each other traders which wouldn't be very beneficial to Flanders or Holland.

Zeeland was during the 1600's one of the most productive and richest provinces of the Dutch republic. It supplied for most of the Dutch fleet during their colonial empire and so I will try to get a similar effect 400 years earlier.
Zeeland is also in a very Strategic position, controlling the shipping lanes of Flanders(as good as all important cities), Brabant and South-Holland. If needed I can tax ships passing through Zeeland and gain significant extra income.

Den Cekke, if you've ever played Civilization 4, then you might enjoy this very much!

    Livonia and Estonia

The Livonian covert ex-pagan force of 500 arrives at the Estonian siege camp by Reval, pretending that they are joining the siege. They are welcomed in by the unsuspecting Estonian forces, who then proceed to celebrate with much carousing and revelry at the onset of nightfall.

While the Estonian troops are in a drunken stupor, the Livonian covert force fouls the water supply of the Estonian army and sets fire to the food stores, siege weapons, and makeshift barracks of the Estonian camp. As the smell of smoke rouses the Estonian army, the Livonian force flees, jubilant as they watch the Estonian army futilely attempt to put the fires out. Celebration is short, however, as they encounter the returning army of 500 Cuman mercenaries. Both sides line up for battle.

HenryCabotLodge, you can either let the battle run or command your troops by posting a battle plan.

I orderd the force of Warrior-monks to be near Reval for the winter solstice operation.

The force of elite Warrior monks moves into position to assist the Convert forces. However, if my Warrior-monks are facing a flank of the Estonian Pagan army we will wait for the battle to commence and then charge the unsuspecting Pagans. This will be done relatively quickly as we do not want to lose too many convert lives for a tactical advantage.

As long as nothing crazy happens I will let the battle just be resolved by you.

The command for the army is to take no undue risks.

That is the only command I am particularly concerned about.
