I have it on CD, I'm pretty sure it's legal; it's a foreign version though. I believe it's some sort of test version, maybe a promotional thing or something.
It's full of bugs and the some of the units use AOE animations; in general the animations are inferior, although some of the units look cooler than their normal version ones.
There are also some other concept units available, such as the Boarding galley (which is basically like a monk boat), mamelukes are infantry, the goths UU is a 'goth berserker', the castles look pretty cool.
However champions look like normal soldiers but when they attack they become AOE hoplites, cavaliers and paladins attack with a lance, other units are slightly different as well, and civ bonuses are not the same. There are also about 50 different AI's; the different game developers.
