Community Spotlight

This is your host, Mr Ought-To-Be President Basse, speaking. As the title of this news post tells us, today it’s time for us to bring back our latest feature, the Community Spotlight. If you missed out last month when this started, or if you just haven’t bothered to search around the spanking new site and all it’s featues (which I would be shocked and awed with horror if you hadn’t), I will give a brief summary of what this is all about.

The Community Spotlight is a feature where I – Basse – pick someone from the forums that has done a big deal to contribute to both the forums and the Blacksmith, articles and so on, i.e. all of Age of Kings Heaven. This happens once a month and in the feature I have a short interview with the victim in question, about how he/she started playing the game we all love, why he/she’s here in the first place, and through this we all get to know each other a little better, and we get someting interesting to fill up the front page. Isn’t it great!?

Now, finally, onto this month’s victim. The guy drawn in MsPaint you just saw is a portrait done after the month’s victim’s self-description. Can you guess who it is? Meh, probably not. This person I’ve chosen because of his unique background story, and because he’s been a lively contributor to the site of late. I’m quite sure you’ve all noticed it by now, but, in case you haven’t, I suppose you’ve either been living under a rock or have an automatic censor of the two words Sly and Guy. Now who am I talking about? No, not Sean Connery. That’s right; Sly_Guy.

Bold text: Interviewer (Basse); Regular text: Victim (Sly_Guy).

According to Weird Al Yankovic, Canadians don’t even bring their guns to the mall. How is it living in Canada?
Sly_Guy: There are a few different types of people, but overall, I’d say that Canadians are fairly friendly, and willing to help out a friend in trouble (granted, I haven’t been abroad, so take that as you will). Nature is great, once you’re away from the major cities, and there’s lots of quaint off-the-beaten-path type of towns. Schools vary from institution to institution (like most places), and my family has never moved, so I don’t really feel qualified to say much more than that.

When did you start playing Age of Kings?
Sly_Guy: I started playing it after I saw my cousin play the original AoK (I don’t think TC was out yet, but if it was, he hadn’t got it yet). I then eventually went out and bought the gold edition.

What is so good about the game that you today, when the game is an ancient relic in gamer terms, still hang around a community based around it?
Sly_Guy: You know, I’m not really sure why I hang around here. See ya!

Kidding, of course. I guess I like the sense of community, and then there’s the nostalgic value, since AoK/TC was the first computer game I became really interested in. I’ve never felt bored with it, since there are so many different ways it can be played.

Who is your favourite designer?
Sly_Guy: I’d have to say Impeached, because most (if not all) of his maps are fun to play. To be fair to the SP designers out there, I generally play CS, so I’ve never been as intrigued by the single-player campaigns and scenarios.

How did you find Age of Kings Heaven?
Sly_Guy: I actually can’t remember. Oddly enough, I can tell you that the first thread I ever read was the Tavern in the scenario design forum.

What do you study?
Sly_Guy: Maths. Seriously. I love math, and in some ways I see it as an art, and it’s particularly beautiful when you get a lot of things that simplify down to one main idea or concept.

What are your hopes or dreams for the future?
Sly_Guy: There are really too many things to list here, but the odds of me fulfilling all of them (or even most) are slim.

Many have surely noticed how you’ve rocketed through your career here at AoKH. You are a relatively new member, registered in 2007, and now you’re part of the staff and the most active news writer at the site. Did you ever expect anything like this to happen in your early days here?
Sly_Guy: Does anyone? When I signed up in early 2007, I had no idea that I’d become a staff member.

Do you have any big interests? Well, except Age of Kings if that happens to be the answer!
Sly_Guy: Music, as Aro can attest to. If you’re looking for a sport, my favourite would be Badminton (I played it in high school – I really sucked, but I enjoyed myself!), closely followed by biking around the countryside.

Time for a few quick ones now; Red or Blue?
Sly_Guy: Neither. and yet, both. Here’s what you do: mix them both together, but add more blue than red. Once you’ve gotten to a very dark shade of purple, you’ve added enough blue, and you’ve reached my favourite colour.

Chocolate or crisps?
Sly_Guy: Chocolate, although if the chips have a good bite (ie, they’re spicy) I’ll take them. I don’t regularly eat either, though.

Antarctica or Sahara?
Sly_Guy: Antarctica, every day of the week. I like things (mainly meaning room temperature) to be cold. It’s annoying, since everyone else in my family hates the cold.

Tea or coffee?
Sly_Guy: Hot Chocolate, with marshmallows and milk (not cream) added.

And lastly now, the soon-to-be classical ending question; do you know a band/film/game/scenario/whatever you’d like to recommend to the people reading this?
Sly_Guy: Band: it’s tough to choose, but I’ll go with Trans-Siberian Orchestra (mostly because it’s getting close to Christmastime). I generally don’t watch too many movies, so that’s out. Game: Trackmania Nations, or Trackmania Nations Forever. They’re free (you can download them), but they’re rather large. Scenario: can I recommend a modpack? If so, Age of Chivalry. It’s almost an entirely new game. If not, then I don’t really have a favourite, except perhaps Capture the Flag (for MP, obviously).
