Topic Subject: History of AOM patches
posted 11 December 2015 10:09 AM EDT (US)
Since I got all this information from old AOMH posts it seems only right that I post it here as well. (Question: Is there away to have the stuff in the quote tags collapse down to a clickable link that can be expanded by clicking it?)

I was curious yesterday about all the past changes to the game. If you are new to the game or even if you started playing after mid 2003 then you might not have known some of the following.

There was a time when the Ra FH was the king. (Edit changed to reflect comments by Kyo, thanks) And when ancestors were actually stronger than they are now. Ra's midgol units used to be far better than they are now. (Edit or maybe not, some of his bonuses may have been restored in TT) Set was considered a very weak god so a lot of changes were made to his animals to make him better. All of these changes were eventually rolled back later and in fact Set was nerfed lower than he had been back when people thought he was so weak. Turns out people didn't play set back then because they played Isis or Ra.
There was a time when Poseiden was king of the Greeks. In fact Zeus might have been considered the bottom of the Greeks at one time. Poseiden used to be able to spam hippikons like it was no ones business. These had their training times nerfed and Norse RC had to be boosted to help against the Poseiden Hip+Tox combo.
Odin Jarls were once uber units that finally got their due about 8 months after the game had been out. By this time Set was now a powerhouse and so got some of his bonuses from an earlier patch removed. Zeus and Greeks in general got a boost with cheaper Hoplites.

The final AOM patch (just before TT got released) saw Set get nerfed beyond what he had been back when people thought he sucked. It also saw some further nerfs to the Norse and a boost to greeks on water with cheaper docks.

Then enters TT. There were multiple changes. A big one was a huge drop in the cost of a colosus. This certainly lead to the current collosi spam for mythic Zeus.

With TT there was only a single balance patch 1.02 that I am aware of. Support for the game was basically done. Below are the details for each patch and a few additional comments.

Patch history

Patch 1.01 – 11/12/2002

Fixed some client and network issues. No balance changes.
CLIENT FIXES
- Improved cheat checks for "zoom out" exploit.
- Fixed an Advanced Setup crash when changing public / private rapidly.
- Fixed a problem with Advanced Setup host dialog not closing when inviting others.
- Quick Setup games now default to 5 pauses maximum.
- Requests for in-game saves are now counted as a pause towards the maximum pause limit.
- Fixed DirectIP connection issues (see below for details).

NETWORK AND ESO FIXES
- Improved login code: We have improved the ESO login code. Users should now experience fewer errors when connecting to ESO and therefore login on the first attempt.
- This patch includes fixes for the stats upload (2,4) problem. If you continue to receive this error message, please try shutting down any other applications or services you have running before launching AoM - the problem may be related to having other processes running in the background. We are continuing to investigate this issue.
- Improved NAT/firewall support on ESO: We have added more support for manually configured NATs and firewalls in this update. You are now able to place your machine on the DMZ, and/or manually open up UDP port 2300 and the game will do a better job of configuring itself in that environment.
- Improved NAT/firewall support for DirectIP: We have improved AOM’s DirectIP support in this patch for users who are running behind a NAT, firewall, or proxy server. There two ways to access this new support.
Patch 1.02 – 12/17/2002 (approximate)

A few norse bugs were ironed out. RC received small boost. Ancesters got nerfed a little. Some early building cost were raised. Hips train slower, Helepoli stats nerfed.
- Fixed some possible timing exploits.

- Scenarios where the "Ulfsark" unit is forbidden no longer allow Ulfsarks to still be created from Dwarves or Gatherers.
- Unit Balance Adjustments (NOTE: Save games from versions 1.00 and 1.01 will not be affected by the balance changes. Recorded games from versions 1.00 and 1.01 are still supported and will replay as before):

Odin now gets his hunting bonus. The actual change was to increase Odin Villager and Dwarf hunting rate from +10% to +20%.
Thor's Pig Sticker improvement now affects hunting rate. The actual change was to increase hunting rate from +10% to +20%.
Loki's Ox Carts are now weaker instead of stronger. The actual change was to subtract 80 hitpoints from Loki Ox Carts.
Raiding Cavaly have +10% more Pierce and +5% Hack Armor. This should let Norse counter archers more easily in the Classical Age.
Norse Longhouse now costs 110 Wood instead of 130 Wood. This will let Norse make more Longhouses.
Isis Obelisks now cost 10 Gold instead of 5 Gold. This should prevent Isis from making quite so many Obelisks.
Egyptian Barracks now cost 75 Gold instead of 50 Gold. This will prevent Egyptians from making quite so many Barracks.
Ancestors now have 140 hitpoints instead of 180 hitpoints. This makes the God Power a bit weaker, but will also affect Mummy Minions.
Hippikons now take 20 seconds to train in Classical. They remain at 15 seconds in Heroic and Mythic. This should make it harder for Poseidon especially from having such large cavalry armies in Classical.
Helepoli now have -15% Hack armor, occupy +1 pop slots, and have -50 hitpoints. This should discourage the "all Helepoli armies" in Mythic.

NETWORK AND ESO FIXES
- A fix to help address the stats 2,4 error has been added.

- Changed the input and output chat text color to white for easier reading.
Patch 1.01 - addresses multiplayer connection problems and fixes a few exploits. This patch version does not affect unit or civilization balance or scenario editor functionality.

Patch 1.03 1/28/2003

Ra FH got butchered. Yes there was a time when it was practical to put just a few vils on food early and get a lot on gold. Make farms before or while aging up. Hit rain. Get heroic around 7 minutes, build a midgol and spam super chariots and camels. So archaic farming got nerfed, Ra's bonus on camels and chariots got reduced to 10% (from 20%). Set gets boosted insanely because everyone thought he was weak. Oh yes Mercs get busted a lot. There was a time when mercs were only limited by train time. Limits were imposed on them and stats reduced a fair amount. First Roc nerf. A few other changes.

• Plow takes longer to research. (+10 Seconds. )

• Roc hack armor decreased (easier for Throwing Axemen to hit them). (hack dropped 10%)
• Roc speed decreased. (dropped by .5)
• Cyclops has more hitpoints (+50 HP)
• Poseidon's Towers produce only 1 Militia.
Patch 1.04 fixed some issues no balance changes.

Patch 1.05 4/15/2003

A few changes to weaken Norse. Ta attack lowered, Valk and FG and Kraken receive some nerfs. WE boosted and priest damage on MU boosted.
CLIENT FIXES
- Fixed an exploit that allowed Armory techs to be researched twice.
- Fixed some minor localization bugs.
- Fixed a crash caused by alt-tabbing out of the application.
- The "Nomad" random map now correctly fires the "Ceasefire" god power at startup. In specific,
god power triggers now work properly in multiplayer scenarios and random maps.
- Detailed help text can now be provided in user-created random map scripts. The "detailsText"
attribute is now supported in random map XML files, and allows plain-text setting of the detail
help for that random map.

the balance changes. Recorded games from all previous versions are still supported and will
replay as before):

*Priest does more bonus damage (+2) versus Myth Units.

error messages on what to do to solve common ESO connection issues. This should immensely
help players using routers/NATs.
- Added improvements in establishing connections to other players.

stats.
- Fixed the Vote dialog to expedite a no-consensus situation (related to drop tricking) and to drop
poor connections faster.
- Renamed ESO chat channels to be category based. ESO will also remember the last chat
channel you were in and, if possible, return you to that channel on relogin.

This is the Odin/Set nerf. Jarls get weakened for Odin and Thundering Hooves begins to get weakened. Set animals slower to convert. Feral weakened. Animal attack on buildings weakened. Set slingers restored to what they were before 1.03. Hoplites made cheaper.
CLIENT FIXES

This is great! Definitely belongs somewhere permanently on the site. Will work on it.
