A Guide to Bellerophon

by Fenris77

Bellerophon won the last vote on Zeus units followed by the Hypaspist. Bellerophon is Zeus' Mythic Age hero and is believed to be the best hero in the game. I'm going to compare him to other heroes and units to see how he matches up.

Lets see Bellerophon’s Stats:

Cost: 6 Favor, 400 Gold, 4 Population
HP: 400
Speed: 6.0 meters/second
Hack Armor: 20%
Pierce Armor: 40%
Hack Damage: 20

Damage x5 vs MU's

Jump attack does 100 damage to any unit
within 4-14 range. 5 seconds to recharge.

Improvements

  • Town Center:
    Classical/Heroic/Mythic Age +10% attack, +10% HP

  • Armory technologies:
    Copper/Bronze/Iron Weapons +10% attack
    Copper/Bronze/Iron Mail -15% hack vulnerability
    Copper/Bronze/Iron Shields -15% pierce vulnerability

  • Zeus:
    Olympic Parentage +25% HP

  • Dionysus:
    Bacchanalia +5% HP

  • Apollo:
    Oracle +6 LOS

    Looks like a good all-around unit. Good speed, good attack, medicore armor. Lets see how it does vs two Hoplites.

    NOTE: All units have been given the Iron and Champion upgrades. Bellerophon is given the Olympic Parentage upgrade. All other upgrades will be stated before the tests. If Bellerophon uses his special attack I will say so before the test results.

    Hoplite Stats:

    Hack Damage: 8
    HP: 115
    Hack Armor: 35%
    Pierce Armor: 15%
    Crush Armor: 99%
    Speed: 4.2 meters/second

  • Hoplite does 8 damage per-hit

  • Bellerophon does 17 damage per-hit

    Bellerophon wins in 23 seconds, 285/500 HP left.
    He does considerably well against two fully upgraded Hoplites.

    Lets see how he does vs two Toxotes.

    Toxotes Stats:

    Pierce Damage: 6.5
    Range: 15 meters
    HP: 60
    Hack Armor: 15%
    Pierce Armor: 15%
    Crush Armor: 99%
    Speed: 4.0 meters/second

  • Toxotes does 4 damage per-hit

  • Bellerophon does 22 damage per-hit

    Bellerophon wins in 10 seconds, 448/500 HP left:
    Decent against archers. Not a big surprise. Lets see how he does vs some MUs.

    Bellerophon vs Colossus

    Colossus Stats:

    Population: 5
    Hack Damage: 20
    Crush Damage: 50
    HP: 1100
    Hack Armor: 50%
    Pierce Armor: 80%
    Crush Armor: 80%
    Speed: 2.9 meters/second

    Bellerophon uses his special attack once

  • Colossus does 11 damage per-hit

  • Bellerophon does 69 damage per-hit

  • Bellerophon's special does 350 damage per-hit

    Bellerophon wins in 15 seconds, 398/500 HP left.
    350 damage per-special-hit! Wow! His special does great vs MUs. Lets see how some other heroes do vs a Colossus.

    Son of Osiris vs Colossus

    SoO Stats:
    Hack Damage: 60
    Damage x4 vs Myth units
    Range: 18 meters
    HP: Base 420 + 126 (546 HP total)
    Hack Armor: 30%
    Pierce Armor: 50%
    Crush Armor: 99%
    Speed: 3.6 meters/second

  • Colossus does 10 damage per-hit

  • SoO does 150 damage per-hit

    Son of Osiris wins in 24 seconds, 413/567 HP left.
    SoO has a better base attack, but Beller's special recharges in five seconds and it takes SoO three seconds to reload and fire. Lets see how SoO does against two Hoplites.

    Hoplite Stats:

    Hack Damage: 8
    HP: 115
    Hack Armor: 35%
    Pierce Armor: 15%
    Crush Armor: 99%
    Speed: 4.2 meters/second

  • Hoplite does 6 damage per-hit

  • SoO does 36 damage per-hit

    Son of Osiris wins in 12 seconds, 446/567 HP left.
    The "Chain Lightning" helps SoO out alot. SoO does better than Bellerophon here.

    Lets see how Polyphemus does vs a Colossus

    Polyphemus Stats:
    Cost: 400 Gold, 6 Favor, Population
    HP:540
    Speed: 3.4 meters/second
    Hack Armor: 40%
    Pierce Armor: 40%
    Hack Attack: 15

    Damage x4 vs MU's

  • Colossus does 8 damage per-hit

  • Polyphemus does 100 damage per-hit

  • Polyphemus' special does 315 damage per-hit

    Polyphemus wins in 21 seconds, special attack used twice, 595/729 HP left.
    His base attack and special are huge! Is it as effective against normal units?

    Polyphemus vs two Hoplites

  • Hoplite does 6 damage per-hit

  • Polyphemus does 23 damage per-hit

  • Polyphemus' special does 53 damage per-hit

    Polyphemus wins in 21 seconds, special attack used twice, 625/729 HP left.
    Not bad. The special attack does good vs normal units too.

    For Heroes its hard to make a Top Three because each one has its strengths. Beller is definitely the best all-around Hero, SoO is good for killing archers, but you can only get one and you must worship Osiris in-order to receive the GP, and Perseus (he was not used in testing because his special attack would mess the tests up) is the best MU killer. Polyphemus was a surprise. He did excellent against Myth Units and normal units.

    So here it is, the Top Three Heroes:

    1. Bellerophon

    2. Polyphemus

    3. SoO

    Suggested Usage

    Bellerophon is great for killing archers behind a meatshield. Decent against melee units but much more effective against archers. His special attack does good against normal units, but is excellent against Myth Units. Overall he is a good all-around unit.

    Vs Norse
    Good for killing Fire Giants behind a meatshield. You need a few archers to support him because Beller is weak against melee units.

    Vs Egyptians
    Very effective here. Kill a Petsuchos in one hit (using the special attack) and can get through a meatshield to get to those pesky Chariot Archers.

    Vs Atlanteans
    Good for getting Turma, Cheiros, and Arcus (witch is a bonus because they can kill your Hoplite/Myrmidon army quickly).

    Vs Greeks
    Needs Archer support. Hoplites and Hypaspist can inflict alot of damage to Bellerophon.

    Conclusion

    Bellerophon is the best all-around hero. Very good against Archers and Myth Units. Good for getting past a meatshield to kill a ranged siege weapon. The best part it once he dies you can just make another one!

    Credits: Credits go to ChimeraArtemis and ManticoreKiller whose layout I based my Guide on.

    Would you please call this a "test" in the future, not a guide. It's not the right word, as there are only tests.

    I did a few test on Perseus but I had to keep him from using his special attack on the MU he was fighting. That caused a problem because I couldn't tell how long it took Perseus to kill the unit because he kept using his special :/.

    To Lime:

    Bellerophon is better than Polyphemus because his special attack is better and he is extremly faster.

    First of all, this is not flaming. I am just going to point out a few mistakes in your guide so that it is not misleading to beginners.

    In the opening when you list Bellerephon's stats, you say that he has 400hp. First of all, Bellerephon has more than that even without upgrades. Second of all, in the tests, you say that he has 500hp which is also incorrect.
    Also, in the stats, you say that Bellerephon does 20 Hack Damage. This is incorrect, as Bellerephon actually does 28.

    When you state Polyphemus's stats, you say that he has 500 something hp. Then, in the tests, you state the correct amount of hp, which is 729.

    One last thing is that it's suppose to be a guide to Bellerephon. The way it's written, it should be entitled, "A comparison of two of the Greek Mythic Age heroes with SoO included".

    Other than that, OK guide.

    The reason I said he has 400 HP and 20 attack is because that was without upgrades. The same with Polyphemus. The reason I included other heroes was because I said "Bellerophon is Zeus' Mythic Age hero and is believed to be the best hero in the game. I'm going to compare him to other heroes and units to see how he matches up."

    People would be yelling at me if I didn't include other heroes to compare him to.

    Bellerophon does x5 vs MU
    Perseus does x10
    Polyphemus does x5

    According to Peter Vasiliauskas's Detailed Tech Table web, the correct values are straight from the data tables the game uses are as above:

    within 4-14 range. 5 seconds to recharge.

    This is untrue; see his stats below. Whilst I'm at it, I'll also quote the code for the other heroes.

    Bellerophon's Attack:

    <action name="HandAttack">
    <param name="MaximumRange" value1="0.1"></param>
    <param name="Damage" type="Hack" value1="20"></param>
    <param name="DamageBonus" type="MythUnit" value1="5"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="All" value1="5.0"></param>
    <param name="AttackAction"></param>
    <param name="DamageBonus" type="SetAnimal" value1="3"></param>
    </action>
    <action name="JumpAttack">
    <param name="MinimumRange" value1="4.0"></param>
    <param name="MaximumRange" value1="14.0"></param>
    <param name="AttackAction"></param>
    <param name="Damage" type="Hack" value1="100.0"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="Unit" value1="1.0"></param>
    <param name="ChargeAction"></param>
    <param name="DamageBonus" type="MythUnit" value1="7.0"></param>
    </action>

    So his normal attack does 5x damage vs MUs and 3x damage vs Set Animals whilst his jumping attack does 7x damage vs MUs. His jumping attack does 20 hack damage without a damage multiplier.

    Perseus' Attack:

    <action name="HandAttack">
    <param name="MaximumRange" value1="0.1"></param>
    <param name="Damage" type="Hack" value1="7"></param>
    <param name="DamageBonus" type="MythUnit" value1="10.0"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="All" value1="5.0"></param>
    <param name="AttackAction"></param>
    <param name="DamageBonus" type="SetAnimal" value1="3"></param>
    </action>
    <action name="FreezeAttack">
    <param name="MaximumRange" value1="5.0"></param>
    <param name="AttackAction"></param>
    <param name="ChargeAction"></param>
    <param name="SingleUse"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="LogicalTypePerseusCanStone" value1="1.0"></param>
    </action>

    His normal attack does 7x damage vs Myth Units (I believe it was 11x in an earlier version of in AoM). Like other Greek Heroes, he does 3x damage vs Set Animals

    Polyphemus' Attack:

    <action name="HandAttack">
    <param name="MaximumRange" value1="0.1"></param>
    <param name="Damage" type="Hack" value1="15.0"></param>
    <param name="DamageBonus" type="MythUnit" value1="5"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="All" value1="5.0"></param>
    <param name="Damage" type="Crush" value1="5.0"></param>
    <param name="AttackAction"></param>
    <param name="DamageBonus" type="SetAnimal" value1="3"></param>
    </action>
    <action name="Gore">
    <param name="MaximumRange" value1="0.1"></param>
    <param name="NoWorkOnFrozenUnits"></param>
    <param name="NoWorkOnStoneUnits"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="HumanSoldier" value1="1.0"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="LogicalTypeMythUnitNotTitan" value1="1.0"></param>
    <param name="AttackAction"></param>
    <param name="ChargeAction"></param>
    <param name="Damage" type="Hack" value1="60.0"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="Huntable" value1="1.0"></param>
    <param name="Rate" type="AbstractVillager" value1="1.0"></param>
    <param name="DamageBonus" type="MythUnit" value1="7.0"></param>
    </action>

    Normal attack does both hack and crush damage, doing 5x damage vs MUs, and 3x vs Set Animals. His special deals 60 hack damage against Human Units, Villagers, and Huntable Animals, and does 420 damage vs all MUs with the exception of Titans.

    This is a good guide. I just have one question. Why isn't Myrmidon one of the things to vote on? The Gastraphetes and the Heitori (sp?) are up there, but no Myrmidon. Anyway, I also noticed people are forgetting to vote, so I vote for Hoplite

    Yeah. And Bellerophon is the single best unit vs a Titan.. Each jump does 70 damage.

    wrong, the titan does best vs a titan, when it comes down to a single unit but thats not smart anyways.

    i personaly prefer perseus. heroes are ment to kill myth and i think he is great for that, instant kill. therefore mythunit does the minimal amount of damage to other units.
