ok, what am I doing wrong here? Here are the steps I've taken so far.

CREATE TRIGGER: testAnim

active, looped or not (doesn't seem to matter), not run immediately

condition: chat contains, from player 1, "test" (without quotes)

effect: Set Animation, click on Kronos and then click the Unit button (I know he's selected because the Show button selects and centers on him).

effect Loop button On/Off (doesn't seem to matter)

then I enter the name of the animation in the Animation (name) field. I've tried a few names so far, all based on the name displayed in the Animation viewer. Here are the name variations I've tried:

TitanXKronos_flailA.grn
models\TitanXKronos_flailA.grn
0//models\TitanXKronos_flailA.grn
Flail/<No Logic>/version : 0//models\TitanXKronos_flailA.grn

none work! I think I'm on the right track but I just don't know what to enter for the Animation name.

PLEASE HELP so I don't go crazy!!!

I think I heard somewhere that animations only work in cinematic mode. Could have changed with the X-pack though.

Have you typed in the actual animation? Kronos doesn't have many.

What I mean is did you copy off the Alt-A animation screen, if you did, quite a few of them must be tweaked a little with the name.

in the animation viewer, whenever you select an animation from the pulldown, the full name of the animation appears above the "tag" window. (I wish the text was selectable, so you could copy and paste it, but that's another matter). The full name and path of the animation appears there. I entered (typed) that into the Animation (name) field in the Animation Set effect. See my first post above for the variations of the animation name I typed in.

Oh boys, you notices that: only the Cinematic animations do work for the effect. For Kronos this are:
TitanXKronos_x12fallback
TitanXKronos_x12splash
If one use the NewXEditor, in the menu Options/Animation are some dropdownlists with the real "Set Animation" names.
And all "Anim Cinematics" animations do also work without cinematic mode.

I finally got an animation for Kronos to work. However, the ONLY two anims in the dropdown menu (Options\Animation... dropdown 'T') are:

TitanXKronos_x12splash, and
TitanXKronos_x12fallback

does this mean that these are the ONLY two animations players can set for Kronos? The Animation Viewer shows that he has a lot more, and I've tried entering all the others into the animation (name) field, but these are the only two that I can get to work.

I didn't totally understand your comments earlier. I took it to mean that the other animations WOULD work. If that's the case, how do I go about getting, for example, "TitanXKronos_flailA" to run?

Yes, this means, the only animations which will work with the trigger effect are the "anim Cinematic".
Copy the file "Titan Kronos_anim.txt" into the AoM/anim folder and open it:
remove the last two {,
copy the anim Flail text

set hotspot
{
name TitanXKronos_flailA
version
{
VisualGranny TitanXKronos_flailA
connect lefthand smoke hotspot
connect righthand smoke hotspot
connect leftforearm smoke hotspot
connect rightforearm smoke hotspot

and save the file. Ready

If You want make more with this anim Cinematics, You can add (for example) a sound and a hotspot on the right foot:
