MAP TRICKS BY AURON_2

SUMMARY: I was just toying with the editor, and i found some pretty awesome things that might give you some ideas on your designing. There are just some of the thousand things you can do with the editor. i decided to list some which i've never heard from anyone else. so here it is.

OUTLINES OF ENLARGED OBJECTS:
~There are some objects that have a limitted size when you try to enlarge them. here are some examples:

As you can see, when i took these pictures, the objects WERE NOT selected. no one knows why some objects creates those outlines when they are enlarge too much. this is what might happen when enlarging objects way too much:

[JPEG, (149.07 KB)]

~this is what might happen when enlarging objects way too much, it will cause the objecti to go off borders

TAKING OFF THE OUTLINES:
~Some people might know this already, but in order to take out these pesky outlines you have to elevate the terrain. by doing this, it will hide the outlines, but it will not get delete them. here is an example:

~Here is something i noticed. the outlines will take the form of the terrain in which was elevated. here is another example:

USING A TITAN GATE:
~The titans gate can really be useful on designing. In order for units to cross under the titan gate, you must enlarge them until the dirt floor of this object desappears. all the titan gates generate outlines. so i just elevated the terrain making the outlines"desappear" as i explained above.

NOTE: These pictures were taken in-game. You must also realize that some objects are able to float in the editor but not in-game.

    [JPEG, (194.44 KB)]

    FLOATING UNITS?
~There are some objects which can be rotated in a Y-axis, giving them the appearence of being floating. Examples:

    <img src=http://img36.photobucket.com/albums/v108/auron_2/screen12.jpg>

    [JPEG, (137.66 KB)]

    [JPEG, (157.98 KB)]

    SOME USEFUL OBJECTS
~The following are objects which can be created by rotating, or enlarging objects:

    [JPEG, (160.87 KB)]

~This object was selected when a screenshot was taken. it DOES NOT create outlines when enlarging.

    TUNNEL UPSIDE DOWN:
~There is a posibility of making a tunnel going downwards by just putting the right elevation, and the right rotation.

  • CAMPFIRE WITH NO FIRE NOR WOOD: By just rotating this object upward/downward, the 3 dimentional part of this object(wood and fire) sunk to the buttom of the map, and cannot be visible, making it look kind of interesting

    NEW UPWARDS WATERFALL
~ By turning the fountain upside down, hiding the outlines, and elevatiing the terrain, you can come up with something like this

NOTE: The texture of these waterfalls are really soft, so you have to be careful how you paint the background. You can also tilt this object to the side, and hide some parts of the healing fountain, leaving the water showing. these waterfalls can create rapid waters if rotated on a certain way as well as normal waterfalls.

Hehehe, some weird/neat effects there big A. The floating carnivora looks like a veggy sputnik over Antarctica. I can see that with a little imagination some of those elements may be used to create some pretty original forms. The mist stairs is really weird!

Unless stuff changed, didn't Reyk's possition object tool not work for making stuff float? They would always rest to normal height when you're in-game or in the editor after saving it.

While we're on the subject of tricks, I'll name a few of mine

You can change the direction of smoke or fire or any of those sprite object by tilting or rotating them them - or you could make them dissapear, like in your screenshot with the campfire. The smoke especially is nice since you can make it blow in a direction, as if there was a strong wind.

You can make some really awesome fog by taking the square clouds that you see in the game menu and rotating them down to ground level, and then placing a few more there to fill in the gaps. If you look at those while the elevation is pitched to ground level they look awesome. Horse Race had something like this in it.

You can make some rapids/rivers by tilting waterfalls, thoug hit's really hard to get it to look right.

and that's all I can remember for now though really the list never ends since you have so much freedom with AoM's editor

i tested some of the objectis, like the flying villager, and it still floats in-game. i actually took some of those screenshots while in-game. and everyone knows about the rapid waterfalls. i just named some stuff that is barely heard of.
EDIT: i think i mention that not all units are able float in-game or something?

hey, did you guys know that some units make breathing noise? like the frost giant!. and i dunno if you guys have notice, but the difference between, a river and a ocean is that the ocean have rally cool lines, that gives it a more cooler water effect and waves can be added to it, without having to do it manually.

EDIT: @Cheezy, it doesnt work in-game?

Too bad there's no solution for rings around really small units.

The villager is rotated, any unit that you rotate will float in the air like that since they rotate on an axis, if the axis is in the center and the object is vertical, then that would happen. People have been using that for a long time, but it's cool none the less all the stuff you can do with it.

Oh and I was talking about using the raise tool in the new editor - I suppose Reyk got a way to fixing it since in the old versions I helped him with it would only work in the editor.

Oh, the difference between oceans and rivers? Oceans have more underlaying terrain layers, otherwise you can add waves to any water body by beautifying it.
