Topic Subject: How to Make a New Spotlight: The Guide
posted 26 November 2004 12:58 PM EDT (US)
I have seen many threads on spotlights, so I thought I could make a guide to do it.

------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------

YOU WILL NEED:

AoMED 0.6A

STEP #1:

Take a screenshot from AoM. This will be your spotlight image.

STEP #2:

Rename the spotlight to what you want to write in objectives to load the spotlight.

STEP #3:

Make the size of the image 256x128 pixels.

STEP #4:

Now you need to convert the file to ddt with AoMED 0.6. Choose the option: "16-bit, no alpha[0]", and its 5 mipmap levels.

STEP #5:

Now you need to copy the screenshot to the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Mythology\textures

TIPS:

  • Put units in cinematic mode if possible.
  • Use SetObscuredUnits on at all times.
  • Don't show any black map.

    ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------

You now have your own spotlight!

    What's a spotlight, lol?

A spotlight is the second tab on the objectives window.

Personally, I think this thread is better - it has more info and is more complete.

    Quote:

I am not sure if you need an AoMED conversion for the files, that should work now.

Perhaps you could add the info from the last few posts in (reyk's post I think).

Then the guide would be complete.

This 'guide' is not even correct, sorry... You couldn't have tried that, because you need to convert it to *.ddt with AoMED and you must use a certain image size and number of colours. It's not difficult though; just convert one of the game's spotlight pictures (in the textures(2).bar) and AoMED and MS Paint will provide you with the necessary information. Then create your pic according to it and place it in the \textures folder.

AOMPlayer lol all the info needed is already posted in the thread I linked to.

Thanks for your corrections, I updated it.

    You forgot to mention:

    1) It should be 256x128 pixels

    2) You only have to put it in the AOM/textures folder.

    Thanks, I edited it again.

if you know how to create icons, then you can create spotlights.

although resizing a really big screenshots to the right pixels sometimes causes the image to be foggy:s.

In-Game screenshots should not have a strange pitch.

a game screenshot can have a stranger pit and it can be good, that doesnt make sense.

hint: use reveal map, and hide the fog, and interface when taking a screenshot your gonna use on a spotlight

A few months ago I tried making a spotlight image a THOUSAND times a hundred different ways using the known methods. And it never worked. It was always a "white nose" looking image.

    - What's wrong with strange pitch? Sometimes 1st person view is better.

    - Change Hints to Tips. Hints are clues on how to do it. You already explained in detail how to do it.

@Mythos Ruler: Dunno what you could have done wrong. I used it in two of my scenarios and they work perfectly. The white nose looks like something in the thread I linked to. Try checking that thread.

I think for the 16-bit format you need AoMED 0.6A, otherwise the pic will get corrupted. And it takes a lot of time to convert it.

(Maybe you want to add that, TitanHeart)

    Now I think it's a good guide !

It doesn't take time to convert - works fast for me. :-/ Ah well lol

    Only about maybe 10-20 sec.

BTW this guide (and topic + its replies) has been useful- a spotlight pic sounds cool! I don't know why they made it so difficult, in AoK you could add one via the editor......
