~What is Spiral Eyecandy?
Spiral Eyecandy is eyecandy that is created by making units at many different angles, then putting them all together and snap them all to the grid.

~What are its limits...
Spiral Eyecandy can be seen everynow and then. Such as the taproot torch. A common spiral eyecandy. But what spiral eyecandy can do has been untouched. I tested the limits of it myself in this scenario~ Spiral Eyecandy ~ In the scenario you can see the amazing things, that are easy, that you can make with spiral eyecandy.

~How to make it...
Spiral Eyecandy can be made simply by placing a total of 16 of the same building all at a different angle. Use the mouse wheel to rotate the units as you paste/place them. A simple Yet awesome starting eyecandy is the Super Mirror tower!

Then you place them all in one area and SNAP them to grid. Certain units such as sentinel, do not like being snapped to the grid therby they are harder to make spiraled...

Now for the two halves of my full spiral eyecandy map from a birds eye view~~

1st Half~

2nd Half~

Enjoy Creating Spiral Eyecandy!!!

Nice

But please don't use bmp files for pictures, they can take ages to load because they take up so much room. Convert it to something like gif, jpg, etc.

I do this all the time, it can make some very interesting things.

Like using Kronoses can make a "Death Mushroom".

But my favorite is using Heka Gigantes, then modifying their speed to 0 and lowering their recharge time.
Then just charging wave after wave of axe-men at them.

Changed to JPG...

Also you solved one of my problems... The Picture showing up problem.. lol.

Anyways I am glad you enjoyed it... For now it was just buildings but I plan on doing units soon as well. Units, unless they are large or somewhat special, (such as arkantos god or heka gigantes) are sometimes boring. But a heka gigantes Crusher sounds cool too.

I know people already know plenty of spiral eyecandy, but most only know of a few of the many amazing things you can make.

Some of the people who make zelda maps make boring gold mines, they could try a spiral gold mine, that would look cool! And would save space.

And if you wanted a small amount of space with an extremely large amount of wood... Spiral trees are your buddies! Because 16 trees form 1 cool looking spiral (sometimes makes a star sometimes just a funky shape) And that is cool for villiger gathering... (looks really cool if you just chop them all down, making a many pointed star!)

Spiral farms and fish can be cool too, but not as exciting.

The spiral Tartarian gate (open) is probably the coolest for me. From a distance it can look like a whole bunch of faces are all arround it, and there is a big hole in the middle that looks like a pit to the underworld... I could just imagine a scenario with a super big spiral tartarian gate, and some egyptian axe men or guardians leading some poor villigers to the edge... then killing them or using a kamos animation to make them jump off... lol.

I've always thought this effect looks good on the pyramid.

hopefully this will trigger some new eye candy =]

real nice effects. Never came to my mind that these things can be worked up on in various units and shapes

A really good effect, visually it's great but I don't know whether it would be that useful in scenarios. I suppose it's theoretically possible to make a cone shaped Pyramid, with about 360 Pyramids spiralled...

You cant - objects can only be rotated on an axis of 16 points.

-[Hello..
posted 01 June 2007 10:50 AM EDT (US)     12 / 39
Aye...

16 points...

A common number in computas!

Well yeah... Its a great eyecandy, and you can use it anywhere... And it never lags!

Its fun too, you can end up with some awesome stuff with correct experimentation.

Can you not? I've always been able to rotate objects at any angle, as many times as I like.

EDIT:

Ok, so being the deterimed guy that I am I was shocked by the revelation by my fellow designers that you could not rotate more than the point of 16. Although I couldn't not remember precisely I was sure that I had always been able to do much more and therefor could theoretically make a cone shaped Pyramid.

I went away to the trust AOM editor and had a go. the result is exactly as I expected:

[JPEG, (182.39 KB)]

The question I have now is how and why other members have not been able to do so? The cone shape I have produced in the above picture uses 35 different pyramids to make a point of 140... and that was rushed, I could have spend more time and had twice that number or more even to make the edge more seemless. I am intrigued to know the asnwer to this.

...

Ahhh....

0_0

0\/=

Well thats with ctrl+arrow keys correct??...

Yeah that lags... I realised that it was possible that way, but 16 is only amount with the mouse wheel... Yes it is possible. But that shouldn't be abused. Also it takes awhile. It lags. And it doesn't work well with all buildings..

Also I playtested it and it turns out IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE IT SEAMLESS.... I spent 15 or so minutes on it and it ended up with shadow lines running up and down the sides since there were so many... (over 60-90 pyramids...

It did lag... 10 seconds in everything went at 2fps then sped up to 80fps then went back to normal as soon as my men walked by the spiral pyramid...

That is your answer...

I can rotate sure but how to make sure it rotates on the inside. I tried with the granary and you always get confused which is the middle point that it turns around...

@ MatoR: Ctrl + Arrow keys was what I used but if, like you say, it causes major lag then such things would be worthless.

For the pyramid, couldn't you do 1\16th of the the rotating with the control arrowkey thingy then copy and paste it (Will need that special mod that allows you to place stuff overlapped)?

errrrr... no.

The 16 thing is the mouse wheel auto rotate... The fact is the rest is with ctrl+arrow keys...

Copy and pastE?

You lost me there lol....

But let me put it this way..

It lags.

It takes awhile to make.

So such things are worthless (if you don't believe me generate a jutunheim / whatever map and then make it at a point then playtest it as a supremacy/whatever and then walk by the pyramaid. Major lag will be what you expierence...

Peace,

Mator

Thinking about it, cone shaped pyramids are not necessarily worthless. If your ownly intention was to create eyecandy and screenshot it you wouldn't have to wrry about lag as it doesn't start lagging until you playtest.

Cone piramid is one of the best shapes. Of course other than the collosseum of troy and the garden of Babylon in the scenario you had
