A civilization from Purple Design Studios

We want you to join the Roman Legion! The Roman Legion is a fully-compatible expansion pack for Age of Mythology. With renowned standards of quality, Purple Design Studios has begun the development of the most complete civilization modification ever created for Age of Mythology. Everything from the building set to the user interface has been revolutionized for the Romans. Incorporating new textures with old models, we will be able to keep download size relatively low.

A number of cinematic weapons and shields will be available as attachments in the Roman Legion, allowing our fans to make use of the mod for their own customized units! Everything from detailed pila to gallic helmets, nearly every item is attached to models using the anim text files, allowing a downloader who knows very little modding to 'play Mr. Potato Head' with our preset pieces and create the units they want to see.

We want you to help us develop the greatest Roman civilization known to Age of Mythology! From AI programmers to 3-dimensional animators, all designers are welcome on staff! With a project of this quantity, it is essential that we obtain all the help that is available to us. To apply, you can either use this form or contact us via email. Be sure to specify that you would like to apply to join the Legion.

----------------------

The Roman Legion will feature a full set of Roman-specific units, structures, techs and god powers! Here are a few of the many units fighting in the Legion.

Behind the Legion

The Roman Legion project began when former active PDS member Age of Knights decided to return to the scene. He had been working on compiling many Roman-related modpacks into a civilization which he had dubbed 'Viva Romana!'. Mixed with feedback from The Roman Legionarius mod, we tossed the name and the concept, bringing you an original Purple Design Studios creation!

There will be a number of props included with the Roman Legion which you will be allowed to use for your own mod projects. When you release a project with a Legion prop, simply stamp a "Requires the Roman Legion Expansion" on your project. The image will be supplied with the final download package. The props package will include a pilum, gladius, scutum, gallic helmets of different styles, the montefortino helmet, gallic shields, a number of additional round shield designs, a thracian helmet, an attachable standard (flag) and many more.

The Roman Legion will have a wide selection of units to choose from, so no army you command will ever be the same. With the intervention of the gladiator arena, multiple-story houses and overall historical accuracy, you can recreate any scenario you can imagine! With legionnaires, velites, centurions, gladiators, equites, arbalesters, decurions, a complete Roman navy and many more units, this could be considered to be the largest civilization submitted to Age of Mythology Heaven!

As more units are developed, the three showcase images above will be replaced as we show you what's behind the Roman Legion. Starting with the infantry and cavalry, we'll slowly work our way into the building set and finally the release! Also, look out for unit sampler packs which could be released later this year!

Other Features

  • Each unit will have its own set of upgrading textures based on the advancement of armor in ancient Roman history.
  • Shields and weapons will also have upgrading textures.
  • Each unit will be as historically accurate as possible without incorporating formations that cannot be properly represented in Age of Mythology's limited game engine. For example, Velites will not march in formation as they were not trained as a corps, but rather self-hired militia units. Armor will match sources exactly.
  • Many components of the Roman Legion will be represented, such as the vexillarius (standard bearer), praetorian guard, tribune, centurion, the siege trebuchet, extraordinarii and much more!
  • In the Heroic age, you will be able to build a second story to existing houses adding to your population limit without taking up more land! With this feature, you can choose which houses you expand to be double-story, which is great for cinematics!
  • The gladiator arena will be able to train a number of gladiator units as well as warrior animals such as blood-thirsty lions and devastating bears! Tasking a unit trained from the arena creates a customized and entertaining battle gaining favor for your mythological army!
  • Slave units slowly gather resources for your economy, build structures for your city and gain short swords in the Mythic Age for cheap local defense (referring to 107 BC. when the Roman government abolished the landowner requirement to serve in the legion)! The units are slow, weak and very cheap, however have no build limit, allowing them to be mass-produced for a streaming economic advantage.
  • Regular villagers (plebeians) can temporarily transform into weak military units for protection against surprise invasions. After a short period of time, the villagers transform back into their weak civilian status.

This is great to hear PPE! I never expected this to come.

If you don't know what to write, start writing. Same thing with scenario design. If you have know idea yet, start designing.

You should fix the link colour. They are hard to read in yellow.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I'll update this thread as often as I can. It seems as though I'll be doing 90% of the coding and artwork for this mod. We're looking for temporary volunteers to help out with anything you can, so please consider helping create the Legion dream.

It's actually progressing very well. PPE is doing a great job on the textures, Sir Dundo is making very good progress on modeling (there are a lot of base models used for multiple units, so that helps progress). I'm not quite sure what the progress is on coding, but I think PPE and AoK are making progress on the coding/animating. All in all, it's going quite well.

And I think you should make some links/titles purple...it's our name, after all.

So, you can get favour from battling in arenas?

Yep. With the intervention of the gladiator arena structure, you can create gladiator units and animals for either aggressive war styles or for gaining favor by fighting in the arena you created them from. We think only 2 should be able to fight at a time, since having the units in your army will be a great advantage in itself.

Just put a build limit on them. Something around 10, and you can do whatever you want with them (get them to gai nfavor, fight with them, etc.)

I mean two gladiator units in the arena at a time. You can have as many as you like in your army.

IMHO train limit does not limit economy at all. Faster train time and lower cost in proportion to gathering ability would give one eco advantage. However in a "real game" it would be OP, if you ever consider pitching romans against greek for example

We're working to ensure that the Romans are a fair match for each civilization. Slave units will be cheaper and they will train faster. The build limit isn't extremely limiting, and therefore it isn't an extreme advantage. Slaves will also be a lot weaker and won't gather resources quite as fast as a well-fed plebeian citizen.

Okay you got my interest here. Do you hire tech tree designers and balance designers/testers?

posted 26 October 2007 04:30 PM EDT (US)     14 / 464
We are willing to allow anyone who would like to help out to apply, whether you're a historian, quality control, or a civilization balancer. Although we are very early in the developmental phase and it might be some time before you actually get to playtesting civilization vs. civilization, we'd be more than happy to let you help out.

Currently, we are looking for 3D modelers and animators, XML/Javascript programmers and texture artists so we can finish the unit and building set before we move on to balancing the statistics. In theory, we could create a proto and anim for every unit and building using existing models for testing purposes, but it would be too difficult to keep track of what unit is what. Aesthetic development will aid in the testing project.

When the time comes, we will be looking for many playtesters to ensure that everything works exactly as advertised - balanced, beautiful and unique.

Make sure they are able to counter thoth elephants. And isis in particular.

posted 26 October 2007 09:09 PM EDT (US)     16 / 464
Lol. We'll be sure to. I would assume that particularly funditores (roman slingers) and the scorpio siege unit would be best for countering a war elephant of any kind.

Hey, I just thought of something, what are the myth units that you will use? Just wondering. 1 screenshot would be nice
posted 27 October 2007 01:49 AM EDT (US)     18 / 464
We haven't started the development of myth units yet mainly because there is some debate over which ones we will be using. Suggested units include: maenads, orthos, pleiade, pythons (a flightless dragon), mermaids, griffons, basalisks, gorgons, sirens, and the caucasian eagle.

At this point, community input is welcome.

2. West Rome
3. Byzantine

wait... i think ive kinda messed it up here. :P

well at least add like a phalangite. maybe. i think im kinda wrong.

Hmm... Would this be the early Roman empire, or after the split into the Western Roman empire and Byzantium?

Anyway, it looks great. I hope to see this finished

Sweet baby maizes!

Why of course: Jupiter, Neptune, and Orcus(Pluto).
In that case it would be the major greek gods all over again. :-P

What about siege? Will romans get a ranged siege in heroic like greeks?
