Topic Subject: How to Make Never-Dying Units (Sorta Like Campaign Heroes)
posted 18 October 2004 11:28 PM EDT (US)
Yup, when a unit dies, it can come back to life - literally. No rewording it in any way.

There are three forms:
Just plain - Comes back to life.
Coming Back to Life with Special Effects
Coming Back to Life WITH ONE OR TWO UNITS "summoned"

These are just a base to more complex triggers - like wood is to a house.
_____________________________________________________

Just Plain - Comes to Life and Nothing Else

Anyways, just have a trigger like this:
---------------------

Active, Run Immediately, High Priority

Conditon: Is Dead (unit)

Effect:
Change Unit Type (whatever you want)
Damage Unit -100%

---------------

If you wanted to make it so that the unit didn't come back to life until the area around it is cleared, change the unit to a cinematic block (cinematic dead body, whatever - just not alive) and do the same. Then make another trigger for when there are no enemy units around it (Units in Area) and change it into a live unit then.

If anyone has anything to add to this, please post (which is what this thread is for).

Notes/Fun Finds:
- The unit will be reborn as if just created (with birth animation included), but it's still the same unit.
- Dead body still appears LOL.
- Try it in a tornado! It works LOLOL! The guy's floating around, never dying.
- When eaten by a spider, the unit is gone forever.
- Sometimes when sucked into an Implode and doesn't come out, the unit disappears/dies.
- It is assumed Myth Units with instant kills don't kill the unit either. Tested: Argus, Cyclops
- If a land unit dies on a transport ship, the unit comes back to life and is standing in water. < Will need to do something about this.
- You can choose which unit to change it to when it dies. A soldier could die and become a shade!

Giving it Special Effects
Here's a neat trick (2 triggers sadly) to give it a sorta "heroish" effect.
-------------------------------------
First Trigger:
Active, Loop, Run Immediately, Highest Priority

Cond: Is Dead

Effect:
Change Unit Type to your "effect" (ie fire, arkantos godout, Olympic Temple SFX...)
Damage Unit Percent - 100
Fire Trigger 2

*********************

Trigger 2
Run Immediately, Highest Priority

Cond: Timer 1

Effect:
Change Unit Type back to normal
Damage Unit Percent - 100

----------------------------------------

Here's a pic of a super axeman: SuperAxeman

In that pic, I used Fire as my special effect.

If you REALLY want to make it good, on the first trigger, add a sound filename effect. Maybe try herobirth2.wav if it's a hero.

For heroes, on the second trigger, add an effect at the end: Damage Unit Percent 90 or something. Or use Reyk's SNXT Set Current HP for exact numbers

Making 1 or 2 Units Appear at Its Side (Summoning Units)

Example: Anubite Dies.
What Happens: It comes back to life with two more anubites at it's side!

In simple English, when it dies, it becomes a Promethean for a split-second, gets killed, then revives, and a Change Units in Area effect changes the Promethean Offspring into two more anubites!

But it has to be one or two. If you want more, use a combination of killing it again and getting 2 more units or changing it to a titan - using the same method as getting two units.

Here's the layout:
============================================
Trigger1
Active, Loop, Run Immediately, Highest Priority

Condition: Is Dead

Effect:
Change Unit Type to Titan (1 Unit)/Promethean (2 Units)
Damage Percent 100
Fire Trigger2
------------------------------------
Trigger2
Run Immediately, Highest Priority

Condition: Always

Effect:
Change Unit Type to what you want it when revived
Damage Percent -100
Change Units in Area: Player 1 to Player 1, Titan Gate Dead (1 Unit)/Promethean Small (2 Units) to New Units you want.

============================================

For those curious, here's a screenshot: Anubite with Axeman

When the Anubite in the pic dies, it comes to life with two axemen at its side.

Note it may conflict if you're atlantean and can build prometheans. So keep the Change Units in Area radius to about 2-4.

You don't have to use it this way. There are tons more ways to use it - just use your imagination!

I might make a trigger for this. Do u mind ?

Treebeard, learn it.

A condition is not a trigger.
An effect is not a trigger.
A trigger is a combination of one or more conditions and effects.
It causes effects to happen if and when conditions are met.
Period.

No, it's okay. Go ahead and use it. That's why I posted it here. It's basically reviving units.

Oh btw, on the change unit type, you can change it to anything. For example: An ulfsark can die and become a shade!

Yup that should work. Only there will be a titan gate - unless change unit type doesn't show birth animations.

It's pretty cool when you do it with an anubite though - it looks like it turns back into a statue and comes to life.

a troll and a norse titan might also sort of work. prometheans turn into prometherus also will look cool.

Or actually, maybe Prometheus turning into a Promethean. Looks more realistic - like he melts into a smaller unit.

Won't work with for example cyclops throws.

This method does work with the Cyclops.

EDIT: I didn't see the post above yours AOMPlayer hehe. Sorry.

BECAUSE:

1) Not everyone knows how to mod
2) Modding can cause out of sync
3) You'd have to mod every single unit you want to do
4) It's a lot easier to make one simple trigger than to create a whole new mod

Now if you don't understand how to create the trigger, just post what part you don't understand.

BTW, this isn't a guide. I'm just bringing this up as some people may be able to make good use of it.

Just thought I'd mention. It looks pretty neat if you change them say, into a meteor or meteor impact ground. It looks as if they explode when they die. Might be cool for powerful monster, wizards or tnt crates lol.

cool for RPGs with random encounters, when an enemy dies you can turn him into a cinematic block for future attacks. It could also be combined with the teleport unit technique.

Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs?
Your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar?
Not one now, to mock your own grinning?

Sorry to double-post, but I just found an awesome trick: Making units appear next to it when it dies!

Example: Anubite Dies.
What Happens: It comes back to life with two more anubites at it's side!

In simple English, when it dies, it becomes a Promethean for a split-second, gets killed, then revives, and a Change Units in Area effect changes the Promethean Offspring into two more anubites!

But yes, it has to be two units that appear - no more no less.

Here's the layout:
============================================
Trigger1
Active, Loop, Run Immediately, Highest Priority

Condition: Is Dead

Effect:
Change Unit Type to Promethean
Damage Percent 100
Fire Trigger2
------------------------------------
Trigger2
Run Immediately, Highest Priority

Condition: Always

Effect:
Change Unit Type to what you want it when revived
Damage Percent -100
Change Units in Area: Player 1 to Player 1, Promethean Small to New Units you want.

============================================

^Amazing trick. You should make a new thread and add it to Theris' guide.
posted 24 October 2004 08:31 PM EDT (US)     21 / 21
Thanks, but they're all related so I'll keep it in one thread.

I asked Theris to put another link or something to this thread so people know you can summon units this way too.
