USA are out, Ghana become the third African team to make it to the quarter finals in World Cup history and we've yet to see a penalty shoot-out. Both games today were fun and set the stage well for tomorrow's mammoth clashes!

Of course they're mammoth. England-Germany is one of the biggest rivalries in football history (and we haven't met in a World Cup since 1990) and Argentina-Mexico is also a big match, even if they're not big rivals (dunno if they are or not).

Well we played like shit and the Germans got us on two fantastic breaks when we took too many risks too early. We didn't really deserve to be in the Last 16 anyway so I never got my hopes up. I don't think Germany can beat Argentina but it should be a fantastic match. I also hope that FIFA finally wakes up and introduces goal-line technology and goal-line referees (as in Europa League 2009-2010) so that obvious goals like Lampard's today aren't wrongly disallowed in the future. There's no arguing that Germany were the better side but that second goal would have completely changed the dynamics of the game and it's unacceptable at this level.

Also, interesting fact: that was England's worst ever defeat in World Cup finals match.

Portugal are out (woo). USA are the only group winners not to be in the quarter finals this year, which begin on Friday after the first mini-break of this tournament.
