The Roman Legionarius

About
The Roman Legionary is a brand new unit featuring brilliant, brand new models, exquisite textures hailed for their detail, impressive animations based on historical accounts, and statistics that mimic those of traditional Roman soldiers. The Legionary will be built at Academies for 60 food, 10 wood for the shield and 20 gold for the armor, based on their historical monthly pay*, and when in box formation, they will form the famous "testudo" formation, or the "turtle" formation.

The project idea was originally conceived by team leader and texture artist The Purple People Eater. Within a few days of the idea, the main body and shield textures were created, which are the only aspects of the mod that remained unchanged throughout progress.

Progress slowed for a while as AoM events rattled design teams across the board and halted progress on near every PDS project. Modeler and animator Sir Dundo, a volunteer for LTA at the time, joined PDS to aid the Legionary's progress. He took the liberty of reviving the project's progress in February of 2007 with his legionary model. He soon added Player Compatible textures and completed all the animations.

Its true, this project has been in production for a full year** (est. August 24, 2006), but our work has paid off to bring you the most gorgeous mod that Age of Mythology has ever seen, and definitely the bet legionnaire unit yet to be modded for the game.

Features
  • Brand new historically accurate right down to the weaponry models and animations
  • Detailed, high-resolution textures
  • Unique historically accurate attack animations
  • Relatively low-polygon model for an enourmous amount of simultaneous units
  • Roman pilum, the designated weaponry of the Legionaries of Rome
  • The well anticipated testudo formation

Screenshots

Apart from the dashing screenshot to the right, you can find tons of screenshots at the Roman Legionarius Homepage, where you will also get behind-the-scenes screenshots of the work in progress, fan art, and even some hilarious blooper screenshots!

You also get a full set of these screenshots and other hidden project files in our one of a kind HTML Read Me document! The most interesting 'Read Me' document that AoMH has ever seen! Just open 'Read Me.html' in your Legionarius folder!

Installation & Uninstallation

Both installation and uninstallation documents can be found within links in the Read Me. These documents are not available at any location online (not even on the homepage), so make sure you keep them!

A Note to Our Downloaders...

I'd like to thank you on behalf of the studios for downloading this mod, because really its you, the fan and downloaders, who keep us designers going. We had a lot of fun producing this mod for you, and if no one else had fun making it, I am positive I did. This mod was based on extensive research into the depths of the internet to make sure that every detail of this project was historically accurate. The helmet was admittedly slightly modified to our liking, but aside from that, this mod is 100% copied!

Also, it is always greatly appreciated when you rate files. Not just our files, but you should rate every file you download with your suggestions and advice. The customer has the most valuable opinion, and is therefore always right!

Bug Reporting

If there is something screwy with your copy of the Legionarius, don't hesitate to report the bug to us using The Legionarius Bug Reporter. Please report missing files, messed up aesthetics and over-powering code. Do not report feature requests, dissatisfaction notices and other related posts.

New in v 1.1

Just a bunch of uninteresting fixes:

- xpacklanguage.dll was missing from the original release
- Building attack was inaccurately high
- Testudo legionarius HP was lower than standard
- Testudo legionarius's speed was too fast for walking animation
- Vanilla proto icon name fixed

Hey guys, I won't be home until 4pm-ish tomorrow, but right now we're staying at a bed and breakfast in the mountains and I'm sitting in the neighbor's yard in the dark because I found out that they have Wi-Fi.

I'll fix the X-pack issue asap.

Thanks Dragonu, I'm glad you liked it. Also, reviews are greatly appreciated, so downloaders, please review. Thanks a ton.

very good. Its complete and its works. only a couple minor problems.

Additional Comments:
i liked it a lot. the textures were good although I'm not to sure about historical accuracy, i wouldn't really know given that i haven't seen your resources. When he walks he glides a tiny bit, both in shield form and non-shield. He has WAY to much armor. starts out with like 52h 67p and does 15 damage and when he goes into turrtle form he has 100h 127p and cant attack. for starters, his basic armor is too high. i didn't even bother adding him to the tech tree, partially because of this. his health is ok, i think. also, he does to much damage to buildings, I'm not sure if its in his protox or what but they destroy them (kinda like destroyers. i think that his armor should be like 40h 30p in normal and 70h 85p in shield form. also, he should be weaker to crush in his shield form because crush implies big things and that shield is just going to make him easer to hit and his arm would break if it got hit with a club like on the cyclops. he does look REALLY nice box form when hes escorting something, like senator (a mod). 9 legionaries and a senator in box is beautiful. i would have given it a 4.5 but couldnt so decided to be nice.

Thanks for the review, nuclear!

I understand that the HP is very high. The legionnaires were VERY armored and the armor is actually fairly accurate. The general over-powering over buildings is a mistake that will be corrected in the next version (which also includes a more interesting icon, the xlanguagepack.dll and some other additions).

As for historical accuracy, his pilum should actually be used for throwing, and he should have a gladius (short sword) for close-range combat. Also, he should be wearing a gallic helmet instead of a corinthian helmet. These are some things we decided to change for personal preference, although you may see a completely historically accurate version someday....

After downloading the xpacklanguage.dll, Windows says that it is "not a valid Windows file" while AoM is booting up, but nothing happens, and it works fine.

However, all my units from the Titans expansion and the legionaries are nameless! Could you have used something with only Vanilla strings maybe?

Btw, great textures and models! The new splash screen was a nice touch!

Well I sent the xpacklanguage to dragonu and he said it worked fine. So maybe something is wrong with the zip or with the file that Sir Dundo is giving you.
