How it Works: Gathering Rates

One of the biggest parts of Age of Mythology’s gameplay, happens to be the micromanagement. Most cases, AoM players will just create their own micromanaging techniques, based solely off of experience; without really considering the numbers and data that could be used for effective economic optimization within AoM. One of the key pieces of data used for optimizing your AoM economy, happens to be the resource gathering rates of villagers.

Below I have compiled a data table of Villager Gathering Rates:

Villager Resource Gathering

Unit Type Wood Gold Herd Wild Farm
Greek Villager 1.08 .91 .73 .73 .69
Egypt Laborer .98 .82 .65 .65 .63
Empowered Egypt Laborer 1.18 .98 .78 .78 .76
Norse Gatherer 1.08 .90 .73 .73 .69
Norse Dwarf .80 1.09 .58 .58 .53
Thor Dwarf 1.00 1.09 .73 .73 .66
Atlantean Citizen 2.56 2.13 1.64 1.85 1.52
Unit Type Wood Gold Herd Wild Farm

With this data, you will be able to calculate how many seconds it takes to acquire a certain amount of resources. For example, to gather for 50 seconds, you take the above unit you wish to deal with, and multiply that number by the amount of seconds. It shall give you the amount of resources.

In effect, the formula for Villager resource gathering rates is similar to this: Unit Type x Seconds of resource gathering = Amount of resources. You can also use this formula to see how many seconds it would take to gather a certain resource for a certain amount of resources, or determining which type of unit was involved in the resource gathering.

Please keep in mind there are other formulas involved with the economic optimization of Age of Mythology.

Notes

  • The Egyptian unit, the pharoah, (and in the case of Ra, the priest as well), have the ability to empower resource buildings. If empowered, the gathering rates of those units directly involved in that building, will increase by 20%.
  • Unlike other Norse dwarves, the Thor dwarves gather all non-gold resources 25% faster, then those of Odin and Loki. Thor’s dwarves also seem to have a gathering rate nearly as large as the Norse gatherers. This finding could suggest that if you are running low on food, and high on gold, then perhaps the Thor dwarf would be a good asset. However, keep in mind, the build times, the HP, and the number limit of dwarves, is quite different then those of Norse gatherers.
  • Also, keep in mind that your decisions throughout the game may change the resource gathering rates of certain resources.
  • Lastly, other economic optimization techniques, were not a factor in this experiment. Keep in mind that the numbers given for the villager gathering rates, are based solely on the idea of having the resource building directly next to the resources being harvested.
