Topic Subject: Lord of the Rings: Reign of Terror - Turn Diary by Frogman (April 2000)
posted 05-10-01 11:00 PM EDT (US)
A little more than a year ago, veteran PBEM player, Frogman, revolutionized the "turn diary" as we knew it. While he was playing Jason's "Lord of the Rings: Reign of Terror" map in single-player mode as the Highmen, he would keep track of some of the major events of the game using the "Notepad" program that comes with Windows.

It's easiest to do this by playing in "Windowed" mode so that you can easily access the program from the task bar. Also, you may want to try playing with "Classic" turns rather than "Simultaneous" so you can type while the computer takes its turns.

I remember reading Frogman's exploits in Middle Earth as he posted them to the (now defunct) AoW Ultra Board and eagerly anticipated each new installment. He was my inspiration for the detailed descriptions I give for my turns in the PBEM forums. As Kheldar Blackmane said, the way he dramatized everything and turned the game into a real story was incredible. He gave his heros personalities and role-played them to the fullest extent. His retelling of battles kept me on the edge of my seat! The old Ultra board crashed but we were able to save a good majority of the story. I'll close this with a quick word from Frogman:

Quote:

Jason said: WOW! This is wonderful! Thanks for taking the time. I REALLY enjoyed reading through this!! Hope to hear about the final confrontation!!

Froman replied: Thanks, this made my day. Comments like that help justify the time. It is also fun for me to reread the story and it makes playing the game more fun too. I think the magic of AoW is the story like quality the games can take.

You can download Jason's "Lord of the Rings: Reign of Terror" map in the Multiplayer Maps section from the AoW Heaven Downloads page. Begin your own adventure today!

So without further adieu, here is the tale of how the Highmen saved Middle Earth, guided by Frogman.

I am now on turn 41 with the Highmen on v4. I did buy Imrail
and the city but after I moved the armies out an orc dragon is
on the way to take the city as well as undead wraiths and
reapers. Imrail does not have magic or holy strike so he is
high tailing it out of there before a wraith catches him.
Paladins are also useless against wraiths and dragons so I
can't see how the paladin strategy will hold the cities.

The level 4 city underground is ready for upgrade to level 4 so I
can get some astras. The halflings are now out of the game.
Eowyn at level 17 is now a wrecking crew by herself and
Faramir level 16 is not far behind. I had to spend on some
missle weapons for them so they can at least fight the
dragons. I am moving Eowyn north into orc territory to raze
some cities and move them back. I will use Imrail to now help
Faramir. I am slowly losing troops with my heroes because of
the dragons taking my cities and the heavy losses when my
archers try to take them out.

Aragorn now has three ships with him and should be ok but not
sure if they can take out a dragon. I will head to the
halfling area to pick up what I can. Maybe I should go after
the razed cities but I want to spend my gold on getting astras
soon. With the halflings and humans gone I wonder now who will be
next.

Dark days in Middle Earth. If only the Valar would return.

Exodus 8:4
Frogman

************************************************

I can see I may have been slow to upgrade and get astras. I
sure would like to recruit a gold dragon and Theoden. My foray
into undead territory has been called to a halt when I needed
to reinforce Minas Tirith. Aragorn for me is still low level
because he stayed underground and avoided some conflicts. That
could be another mistake. Taking and holding undead cities and
locking up troops to migrate is a slow process and I razed
instead when I withdrew to Minas Tirith. As soon as I can cast
enchant weapon on Imrahil I should be able to make some gains.
I am casting summon eagle so maybe I can find some help out
there.

04-22-2000

************************************************

I have Eowyn, Faramir, and Imrahil with a titan, priests, and
archers. They number 15 in two stacks. The relentless attacks
on Minas Tirith are whittling away my forces as we are now in
day 54. So the group decides the only hope is to find Sauron
and kill him. Meanwhile Aragorn is in the depths and gathering
items no longer needed by the departed halfling hero. The
rebuilt city is being guarded by a lone priest hiding in
outside the city. An eagle has made its way to the level 3
cities to begin to rebuild there.

As Faramir and company head into undead territory they soon
meet an army of dragons, reapers and wraiths. The highmen are
victorious but they number now only 8. The archers succomb to
the dragons breath quickly. As they move on suddenly they are
struck by a cloud of death from the Altar of Death not once
but twice. Only 4 survive and Imrahil is no longer with us. No
where close to Sauron and already the forces seem too small to
succeed.

Faramir and Eowyn are powerful though at level 19 so they
decide to go on, there is no point in going back to Minas
Tirth now. They easily take the a level 4 city and leave a
titan and priest behind to migrate to highmen. It is up to
Faramir and Eowyn alone to enter the underground passage
behind the city. They sense the evil of Sauron and prepare for
the encounter. They cast remedy before moving on but do not
use it. As they descend to the depths they encounter walls of
flame that take their toll. Fortunately the remedy spells are
already cast and they use them. As they pass the last wall of
flame they are attacked by warlords, wraiths and reapers. They
make it through but not without damage. Another remedy spell
is cast and another started with the little remaining mana a
level 1 mage can muster.

The onslaught is fierce. Black dragons are tough but
fortunately Eowyn is mark IV on poison darts and Faramir is a
dragonslayer with mark IV archery. As they press through the
wall of dragons, reapers, wraiths and warlords, Sauron
suddenly is spotted in the city. They move to strike before
they must take on any more dragons.

It is now Sauron, a warlord, a spider and archers against
Faramir and Eowyn who have 10 and 11 of their 14 hit points
respectively. They rush toward Sauron who with 9 attack and 10
def will not be easy. The spider hits Eowyn hard and she must
use her only remedy spell. They press toward Sauron amidst a
rain of arrows but their defense is strong. Eowyn can reach
Sauron and deals him a solid blow but she now has 2 hit points
left and cannot survive another melee. Faramir must finish the
job and with the extra strike the job is done. Sauron is
defeated.

Success has come at a price. Minas Tirith, with only a ragtag
force falls quickly and the entire land falls to the orcs who
grow stronger every day. The cities have migrated to orcs and
Faramir and Eowyn are far away. The rebuilt city in the depths
has been taken by a dragon and the priest in hiding tried to
bring back the city to quick and paid with his life for that
mistake. Aragorn returned though to reclaim the city, and
should the dragon return, there are 4 dragon ships in waiting.
Aragorn decides not to install Valkyrie and instead will wait
for more cash to upgrade and install astras. Aragorn hopes the
astras are as powerful as legend holds. The level 3 cities are
under construction.

There is hope, however small, that the highmen can survive the
masses of red dragons that inhabit the lands and that Saruman
can be defeated. The elves and dwarves surely benefitted from
the death of Sauron, perhaps they can now slow Saruman enough
for Aragorn to succeed. Day 63 awaits.

Day 63
Aragorn has finally build up the level 4 city and
installed the Astra, he needs them badly. He decides to take a
look in the upper level for some more sites to help build an
army. As he pushes forward he spies an 8 stack headed by a Red
Dragon. He turns and runs as far and as fast as he can. The
Dragon has spotted him and approaches but is just out of
reach. As the new day dawns Aragorn moves before the Dragon
and makes it to the Dragon ship laying in wait next to his
city. Moments later he sees the Dragon and now giant beatles.
They take the city. No Astras will be coming from there any
time soon.Aragorn must flee the level 4 city he has worked so
hard to build. As he heads southwest back to the pair of level
3 cities he build a dragon appears in the area and takes the
cities and the giant eagle that was certainly no guard against
this foe.

Aragorn trusts the 3 Dragon ships moving in tandem to be
enough to stop a Dragon attack but he is not sure. It must be
enough of a deterent because the dragon will not attack.
Aragorn gets out and takes back the level 3 cities and uses
the three ships to block access from up the underground river.
He is safe for the moment and has access to a dock to build
more ships. Now at day 93, he has 5 ships on guard. He is safe
but trapped in this cold dark cavern, he is a prisoner. He
would like to venture forth but knows that if he dies, their
cause is lost. He waits, and hopes, that Faramir or Eowyn
might still be alive, and that they have been more successful
than he. Just maybe they will find him and bring these days of
darkness to a close.

With Minas Tirith destroyed, Eowyn and Faramir must make their
home in the land of the undead. The darkness is difficult
enough, but the constant attack from Red Dragons is enough to
wear down even mighty heroes. But at least now there are
enough cities and enough time to produce the mighty Astras. No
sooner is one produced when the first test from a stack with a
Red Dragon comes. Eowyn and Faramir are impressed. The Astra
is the equal of a Red Dragon and with the slightly better
speed she can get in a first strike.

In these parts enchanted weapon is handy to have and Faramir
is happy to oblige the Astra. Now it is off to clear out some
of the surrounding caverns to build some sembalance of a
resistance against the orcs. The caverns are occupied by the
remnants of Saurons army and they seem easier now that their
leader is gone. Of course, after taking out Sauron anything
would seem easier. With several cities, even large 4 hex
cities, there is enough income coming in to have more Astras
to assist.

But things are moving slow, the Orcs sense the collapse of
Sauron as an opportunity and the attacks are increasing. Eowyn
and Faramir cannot cover enough ground by themselves and the
orc raids are successful in taking cities at least for a
while. Thankfully they do not raze the cities. Eowyn and
Faramir cannot believe they have taken a month and only have 6
Astras to help. If only the gold were not in such short
supply. If only the Red Dragons did not roam so freely. The
darkness is starting to affect their morale.

It is day 93, the orcs have just cast Death Mastery, the days
seem even darker if such a thing is possible. There must be
Black Dragons everywhere. Eowyn and Faramir head out to push
back the orcs coming from the northwest and hope the Astras
can defend what has taken so long to build. The dwarves and
elves are holding up. Eowyn and Faramir wonder what could have
happened to Aragorn. They pray for his safety.

Day 93
Roderick joins Aragorns forces, he is a level 4 hero with wall
climb but not much else. He appears in the caverns of the orc
warrens in what was once undead territory. Before he has a
chance to even move Roderick spots Sarumans forces. An 8 stack
headed by a dragon. What the hell has he just signed up for?
Looking at certain death he doesn't know which way to turn.

On the surface an Astra has just taken visited the blood
shrine and is filled with bloodlust. She spots a dragon stack
going down into the caverns, and she heads off after it. In
the cavern, the 4 hex city Harak-Dul has just produced an
Astra, she heads quickly toward the intruders. The dragon
stack splits and the dragon takes the 3 hex city Orad-Khan.
Roderick retreats toward Harak-Dul and the Astra who he hopes
can protect him. The Astra with bloodlust takes the dragon one
on one. She has been around only a short time, but these days
it doesn't take long to earn a gold medal. With her extra
speed she can strike first, the dragon has only 8 hit points
left after her attack. The dragon counters with a mighty blow
but loses this fight.

The other stack members are level 1 and 2. The Astras make
short work of them and leave some easy pickings for Roderick
who benefits from the experience. Roderick looks at the
Astras, though they are creatures, they are beautiful to
behold. Both glow with a pale light, he notices one is pulsing
with a redness as well. It is the one that took out the
dragon. He notices the sword dripping with blood, and the
scars though barely noticeable. From her eyes as well he can
tell there have been battles tougher than this one and death a
common sight.

Eowyn and Faramir, venture northwest and raze the undead city
Morannon by the tower of pestilence. Fighting dragons has
become routine for them and they are glad they boosted their
resistance to 10. Dragon breath is not effective against them
and it gives time for their ranged attacks to take the dragons
out. But the goblins slip into the caverns of the goblin
warrens just north of Barad-dur and they go back to clean them
out. With Astras now 10 in number, Eowyn and Faramir decide to
split up.

Eowyn heads east back toward Minas Tirith and picks up
Roderick and now 4 Astras. After some encounters with small
forces they soon take the three gate cities leading to Minas
Tirith. Only a single dragon accompanied the forces.
Three Astras head south to the land of the Haradrim. They raze
Haradrim-Guul but take Haradrim-Baal and the 4 hex city of
Harad-Tor. There are plenty of Wraiths, Reapers and Demons,
but no Dragons. Two of the Astras have enchanted weapon so
they have no trouble picking off the stacks one by one. They
are all gold medal in short time.

Faramir finds no more troops coming from the north but stays
guard with a couple Astra. Nurn, just south of Barad-Dur has
migrated to elves and a nature elemental is produced. Though
not the best unit for fighting dragons, the land soon begins
to turn green. Reports come in of elven success in regaining
land and everyones spirits begin to rise. Everyone but one.
Alone, in the dark caverns, Aragorn remains trapped below.
Still awaiting news, hoping for a sign he can venture forward.
His patience wearing thin, he debates making a run for it to
see if any of his friends are still alive, but he knows that
if they are dead he will soon join them, and if they are
alive, they will find him. So he waits.

Day 106 awaits

Day 106
Roderick looks at the group he has joined and suddenly
realizes he is the only male. He used to tell his men that
showed cowardice in battle that they were fighting like girls,
if someone said that to him now he would take it as a
compliment. Eowyn was pretty good looking and if he hadn't
seen her in battle taking out dragons, and warlords like they
were level one units, he might have made a move on her. She
was the first level 30 hero he had ever seen and he wasn't
about to chance making her mad. Today was a big day he knew,
finally Minas Tirith was back in highmen hands. Roderick could
see though that Eowyn was still concerned. As good as their
gains were, Aragorn was no where to be found. Migrating Minas
Tirith and the gate cities back to highmen was set and they
stood guard at the first gate.

They spotted orc forces to the north, 5 dragons, 3 warlords, a
demon and 6 other units headed their way when suddenly 2 of
the dragons broke off and headed west to the orc warrens. The
lone astra that had cleaned out the spider nest just to the
north stayed below and out of sight. An astra on the way out
of the warrens retreated back toward the 4 hex Harak-Dul where
another astra should soon be ready. Two astras came up from
the south and now the dragons cannot be spotted. They must
already be in the warrens. The two astras from the south and
the one from the spider caverns enter the orc warrens and find
2 dragons. Three on 2 is no problem and the three emerge.

Eowyn, Roderick and 3 astras take out the rest of the forces
and return to the gate city. Roderick with 41 speed has some
movement left and takes one of the towers. He spots renegade
undead forces of a wraith, 3 warlords and a demon. He must
hurry back to the group next turn but it seems you upgrade at
just the wrong time and the undead attack lone Roderick before
he can move. It looks like the end for Roderick but now level
7 with 8 defence, 7 attack and enchanted weapon he has a
chance.

The warlords surround him and use round attack, luckily for
Roderick, they slash each other as well. The demon
and wraith are killed in counter attacks and Roderick finishes
off the wounded warlords. What an upset, and Roderick gains
another level in one battle. He swaggers back to Eowyn who is
surprised to see him alive. She has some new respect for this
mercenary and figures he just might be worth the money after
all.

Faramir, getting bored with the watch heads for the mines of
Barad-Dur with 2 astra and a nature elemental against 2 black
dragons, 2 ballistae, and 4 warlords. Faramir takes the
warlords, the astra attack the dragons and the elemental takes
the ballistae. The black dragons appear tougher than the reds
and the astras can only take out one before going down. They
are the first astras lost in battle. Faramir uses round attack
to take out the warlords quickly, the nature elemental takes
out the ballistae and Faramir finishes off the dragon. Now on
to collect the booty.

The land of Harad is now solidly in highmen control, with 3
astras together taking out the orc forces. They are worn down
and casting healing every turn but soon avengers and dwarf
giants will join them.

Aragorn, can wait no longer. He casts great eagle and sends
the scout forward and moves the 5 ships up. He spots a dragon
guarding the path he took down to the depths and can only
attack with one ship. He decides to split the ships, 2 to
guard the dragon and 3 to move forward back to the Stewards
Respite he was chased out of. As he approaches the eagle scout
finds a red dragon and some level 1 units guarding the city.

He knows he is nearly under Minas Tirith and the entrance on
the other side of the underground river will come out in the
mountains. Fortunately he gets to level up and takes
mountaineering. He sends the eagle through the passageway and
follows after. The ships cannot block off access due to the
bridge. They hope the dragon stays put.

The dragon does not, and heads up after Aragorn. Aragorn must
move quickly to stay ahead of the dragon and as Aragorn
reaches the surface he is joined by an astra. The eagle
reaches Eowyn and Roderick who are clearing out North Gondor
and they are overjoyed to know Aragorn has made it back. They
are only one day apart. Unfortunately there are 3 stacks of
orc troops about 20 in number with plenty of warlords and
demons between them and a dragon on the heels of Aragorn.
The orc forces are on the run and the elves are advancing, but
Saruman is still powerful and Aragorn is in danger. If Aragorn
can meet back up with Eowyn they will be ready to look for
Saruman. If Aragorn can survive the next day that is.

Day 116 awaits.

Day 116
The dragon retreated back to the Stewards Respite. An Astra
went down after it. Silver medal Astra vs silver medal Red
Dragon. It seemed the Astra would win this fight but with 4 hp
left on the dragon the Astra could not put it away and lost.
Aragorn met up with Eowyn and Roderick and they began to
assemble an army of astra, avengers, and valkyrie to attack
the orc forces now numbering 22 in the level 2 city south of
the mountains near Minas Tirith. The eagle scout pressed west
and found hordes of orc forces including many dragons and
incarnates. It is clear the forces will need to move north of
Minas Tirith and then move west, but first they take out the
orc forces to the south. The orcs while numerous are mostly
level 1 and 2 and present no problem.

Faramir, flush from cleaning out the mines of Barad-dur heads
north using the underground passage. Astras are moving north
on the surface. Suddenly Faramir is attacked by an independant
group of 5 Karagh and 3 Black Dragons. Faramir is level 26 but
he has never seen a Karagh before. He hopes they go down quick
but they sure look big. Faramir kicks himself for running off
by himself and now must fight for his life. The Karaghs attack
first and Faramir takes out one of them but has only 14 of his
18 hit points left. 4 Karagh surround him and attack. Faramir
has a viscious counter attack and all the Karagh are weakened,
but Faramir only has 6 hp left. He decides to use round attack
and takes out 2 more Karagh but a black dragon moves up and
overcomes Faramir. His last thoughts are "not like this, not
alone" All that remains is the Silver Scimitar.

Unaware of Faramir's death, the highmen forces press into orc
territory. They have now met up with the elves in the north
and goblin forces as well. Stacks of 3 astra appear able to
take out everything they meet but without enchant weapon they
must leave the wraiths alone. Valkyrie are now coming from
Minas Tirith and are mixing with the Astra. The western war
will be filled with incarnates but the Valkyrie relish the
quick gold medals that will come from that confrontation.
The next days should decide the war as the bulk of orc forces
will now be met. Aragorn(Level 12) is now north of Minas
Tirith with an army of 20, including Eowyn(L30), Roderick(L9),
astras, avengers, and valkyrie.

Day 124 awaits.

Day 124
Aragorn, Eowyn, and Roderick gather their force of 8 astra, 3
avengers, 3 valkyrie, 3 giants, a nature elemental and Atam, a
level 3 hero who joined the cause. The are north of Minas
Tirith and are ready to head west into orc territory and
hopefully to Orthanc, where they know Saruman will be. They
have sent an eagle scout ahead and a group of 4 astras are
making their way westward from Dol Amroth which is southwest
of Minas Tirith. Dol Amroth is the 4 hex city Imrahil came
from. As Aragorns army marches they take the level 1 cities
that are not heavily guarded and they make their way to
Edoras, a 4 hex city.

The astras have made their way to Orthanc and the path to
Saruman is clearer. Aragorn and company attack Edoras in a
huge battle against 15 orc units including 3 dragons,
incarnates, executioners and warlords. Aragorn rushes into the
battle and is nearly killed if not for the valor of an avenger
who was killed holding off an orc warlord. They only lose one
unit but all are wounded and there are not enough healing
spells to go around. The valkyrie have proven their worth, and
while they are not as durable as astras they hit hard with
holy strike and can avoid ground forces. Edoras is taken and
migration begun. As they look around they can count the orc
forces and are stunned to find 116 orc units within a days
ride. Their army of 21 hardly seems sufficient.

The 4 astras from Dol Amroth make their way to the Black Gate
of Isengard and take it. A mountain range separates Isengard
from Edoras and the largest part of the orc forces are on the
Edoras side. Surprisingly Orthanc is lightly guarded as well
and they take it too. No sign of Saruman, but other signs tell
them he must be in the caverns below. The astras go into the
caverns that lead under the mountains back toward Aragorn and
clear the way for Aragorn's forces.

Eowyn has begun casting resurrect hero and soon Devon is back,
he was a level 1 unit and not worth taking. Intrigued she
casts the spell again. At level III spellcasting it takes
several days. As the spell is finally cast they see they have
brought back the famous halfling hero Sam (Rayb). He died at
level 16 and they scrape together the 650 gold it takes to
keep him. Sam tells them of the demise of the halflings and is
grateful that the highmen have been able to succeed. Knowing
what happened to his friend Pippin, Sam with level IV
spellcasting begins the resurrect hero spell immediately.

The orcs soon retake the Black Gate of Isengard as Aragorn's
forces move carefully over the river toward the caverns of
Isengard. They decide to take the longer route underground and
avoid the forces at the Black Gate and look to meet up with
the 4 astra.

The path underground is not clear yet though and the first
stack to go into the caverns must battle Spider Queens
warlords and a host of archers. Another avenger and a giant
are lost. Three Karagh are just a hex away as Aragorn waits to
enter the cavern but even the Karagh will not attack Aragorns
powerful stacks and hopefully Aragorn can make it underground
before orc reinforcements arrive. Dragons and demons can be
seen headed their way from the Dunlending Hold, just to the
north. The orc forces east of the mountains press further east
and retake Edoras from a lone astra and then the small cities
to the east. Only a mountain range separates them from Minas
Tirith and a Dragon is now within reach of the city. The
highmen begin to reassemble an army to defend the coming orc
rush.

The days are indeed long and the battles many. It would indeed
take a book to detail them all. Orc forces are battling even
at the east gates of Minas Tirith. Tales of valor abound. The
lone astra that held off orc forces at Edoras could have fled
but stayed, slowing the orcs by several days until finally a
dragon did her in. The nature elemental that fought an orc
horde would have won a great battle but for the incarnate. She
would not be possessed though and eventually forced the
incarnate to kill her, but better that than possession.

Tondor, a Level 8 dwarf hero, has joined the cause and is with 4
astra to keep the area of Rhun and the swamps just south of
Lothlorien in highmen control, but not without many battles.
The elves and dwarves are not advancing though, and it is
clear the task has fallen to the highmen.

The outcome is still uncertain but Aragorn is now committed to
finding Saruman within a few days. Reinforcements are not
likely to come, and the path back to Minas Tirith appears
blocked. Thankfully the 4 astras from Dol Amroth should soon
be with them to bring their number back up to 23, and everyone
is anxious to see who Sam is able to bring back. The days
ahead will need heroes for sure, even if they must die again.

Day 136 awaits

Exodus 8:4

Day 136
Aragorns forces are now all in the caverns and pressing
forward taking the level 2 and 3 cities that are lightly
guarded and they take the 4 hex Uruk Hai Citadel as well. On
the surface Orthanc has been retaken by the Orcs. In fact all
the cities west of Minas Tirith are now in Orc hands again.
Aragorn took the best forces with him and the Highmen have
trouble holding their gains against orc forces that seem to
appear out of no where. Minas Tirith barely escapes the
clutches of a lone dragon as 3 Valkyrie are enough take it
out.

The Orcs have cast death mastery and the highmen hold a death
node. A Black Dragon is on their side if they can find some
units to control it. 2 Astra, a Valkyrie and Nature Elemental
stabilize in a group and the Black Dragon is quickly put to
work fighting orc forces who are closing on Barad-Dur.

Sam has completed casting resurrect hero and the group is
anxious and hopeful that a slain friend will be brought back.
They jump back in horror as they see they have just brought
back the Nazgul Lord. Aragorn kills him quickly before he can
regain his strength. Sam begins casting again, this time
Sondra is brought back but even though she is an allied dwarf
she will not join the group. Sam is stunned, he realizes now
how fortunate he was to be brought back but his hopes for
Pippin begin to fade.

Aragorn instructs Sam to cast summon gold dragon while
Eowyn continues to work on resurrecting
heroes. Mana is in good supply as eagles on the surface
continue to keep nodes in highman control but the goblins have
just cast mana leak and they are using mana up quickly with
expensive spells.

Battles range all over the map, in the depths the Stewards
Respite is back in highmen hands but further up the river
goblins are active and there is much ship to ship combat and
again the astras prove valuable. They can't cast healing
enough though and wish their healing was more powerful.
Beatles dig tunnels and pop out when least expected. Caverns
are also hotly fought for as the orc bone horrors take the
goblin warrens and dragons are quick to enter any hole they
can find.

But the most important action is under Orthanc, as Aragorn and
his forces squeeze through a narrow passage. They see a sign
saying "herein lies the power of Saruman" and they take the
level 1 cities of Red Guard and Black Guard which are lightly
defended. They can see an opening into a larger area and
demons and other foul creatures lurk in the shadows. They here
footsteps behind them and all the cavern cities they just took
have been retaken. They don't know who is behind them or what
lies ahead. One thing is certain though, they will have to
fight their way in and fight their way out.

Day 141
Under Orthanc itself Aragorns troops huddle in the caverns and
prepare to advance on Saruman. Saruman has just cast Death
Mastery and suddenly most all of Aragorns troops are cursed.
For the Astras this means only half the defense in addition to
no natural healing. From behind them they see the stack that
has followed them into the caverns. It is only a Beatle, but
suddenly 2 black dragons appear and close off any retreat.
There must be a death node nearby.

Atam, 5 Astras and 2 Valkyrie guard the rear, 3 Astras and
assorted level 3 units go to the surface to block the cavern
entrances and as Aragorn, Eowyn, Sam, Roderick and the remaining
4 Astras move forward through the walls of fire to Sarumans hideout.
Saruman is accompanied only be two archers and has no where to run.

Aragorn's stack heals from the fire damage and attacks. The 4
Astras take out the archers and head for Saruman. He is alone
but at level 30 he has 10 attack, 10 defense, 10 damage, and
20 HP. The Astras attack and their combined effort only cuts
Saruman to 10 HP. One Astra is dead and the other 3 have only
5 HP each. The Astras cannot survive another counter attack
from Saruman, they are cursed and don't fight with their usual
strength.

Saruman now heads for Aragorn. Eowyn, level 30
herself, attacks Saruman and takes him down to 2 HP but in one
melee she has gone from 18 HP to 4. She knows that if Saruman
attacks her she is dead. Aragorn, with only 12 HP and less
defense than Eowyn looks on helplessly. Sam, level 17, is a
magic hero not cut out for melee, and he would not survive an
attack on Saruman. An Astra attacks Saruman, does no damage,
and is killed in a powerful counterattack.

Seeing no other choice, Roderick bursts forward and strikes Saruman.
Roderick takes a stunning blow, nearly killing him, but he strikes
Saruman again and his sword nearly takes off Sarumans head and
kills him. Eowyn owes him her life, Roderick gives her a wink
and begins to think he just might have a chance with her.

Atam moves to the surface after taking out the 2 black dragons
and takes his stack to the dungeon to see what prisoners can
be released. Two Astras in his stack are gold medal with
enchanted weapon and not cursed, which made all the difference
against the black dragons. They slice through the Red Dragons
in the dungeon and cannot believe who they have just released.
None other than Gandalf himself. At level 20, spellcaster V,
they know he will be a boost to their cause.

While this would seem to be a moment of victory it is short
lived. The Goblins have cast Death Mastery as well, the Astras
on the surface are cursed. With Saruman dead, the orc forces
seem to go wild and attack everywhere with Red Dragons,
Incarnates and Warlords. Red Dragons are now able to take out
two or even three Astras single handed. The losses are severe.
Once invincible stacks of 4 Astras are being wiped out. Too
much mana has been spent trying to resurrect dead friends to
no avail. Time after time they must kill they scum they
resurrect. It seems there are more evil heroes than good but
they take solace in the fact that many of them are now dead
twice.

The elves and dwarves repay the highmen for their trouble by
cancelling the alliance and declaring war. The highmen feel
betrayed and they now have to battle the elves, the dwarves,
the goblins and remnant orc forces to restore peace to the
land. Everywhere their forces are in retreat. Only Minas
Tirith, Barad-dur, the land of the Haradrim, and Orthanc are
in highmen control. They call on Gandalf to dispell Death
Mastery and now must conserve their mana. They need the astras
back at full strength soon, and they prepare to split the
forces at Orthanc but first they must decide on the next
course of action. They huddle and listen to the advice of
Gandalf.

Unfortunately, the story ends here. But rest assured that that the Highmen were victorious. Will Roderick ever win Eowyn's heart? Well, that's a story for another time.

I encourage you to follow Frogman's lead and post your turn diary as well! The entire AOWH community would love to share in your adventures.

the scenerio sounds good but it is only AoW1 isn't it? Is the auther of the scnerio making one like this for AoW2?

Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Sorry I never answered your question Neo. It is an AoW1 map. Jason made the map (and many other great maps), but I haven't seen him around for AoW2.... yet.
