The first turn gave me control of the goblins instead of DE.

Note,
The game froze twice while I was trying to play the turn.
Only after I rebooted was I able the complete the turn.

But goblins too don't have tunnelers.
How was I supposed to get tunnelers in the original setup?
Do you think it my choice of DE might be unbalanced on this map?

the gobbos have the big beetles, and the halflings have a special equipment (not sure which version of the map you play, but at least you should have the earth-elemental spell)

but you can still win without tunneling...
