Dear everyone,

I've made a new map, The Lost Realm, and I need your help in playtesting it before I make it publicly available here on Heavengames. Will you help me? There are nine available races and I will take the last one. They are:

Highmen, halflings, elves, frostlings, humans, azracs, orcs, dark elves and undeads.

You will all receive the map before the game begins.

I'm looking forward to sharing the map with you!

(You will of course all receive playtesting credits in the description of the final map)

Map: The Lost Realm

AoW Ruleset: Standard rules

Leaders on map: Nope

Sphere customization: Nope

Allied victory: Allowed, with one race which may not be of the opposite alignment. An evil or pure evil race may not win together with a good or pure good race and the other way around.

Exploration: Yep

House Rules: Standard AoW Heaven house rules. In addition we use the following house rule: "You may not retreat from a tactical combat in which you have attacked, shot at or used any spell or ability on enemy units unless at least one of your units have been attacked, shot at or the subject of a spell or ability by an enemy unit. The exception to the above is if either you or your enemy is unable to deal further damage. It is also forbidden to draw the same enemy stack into a tactical combat more than twice each turn."

Activity expectation: You should only sign up if you will generally be able to play turns within at most 72 hours from receiving them. If you are unable to play your turn within 72 hours you should post in the relevant topic in advance. Writing turn logs is optional but you should always post a "turn sent" when you have played your turn so we know who's turn it is.

(I mentioned making maps because it's not very long ago I was pondering over something like "map balance tool" which would load your map and use some simple criteria (defined using big lot of pathfinding) to determine the its balancedness, mainly evaluating distance from your starting possessions to all other resources on the map, plus giving some score for those starting possessions etc. After a while I started rather thinking about whether some maps are still being made and if it could have some use.)

I like joining new games. Generally whenever a game pops up here, I join.

Great idea Ramillies Do you have any idea of how to extract information for a map-file? I think it is difficult to actually calculate how balance a map is (because there are many factors that matters), but if tool could calculate fx how much there is within say 100 move point of each start locations it could help give an idea of how balance the map is.

The biggest catch is that the HSM format used for maps and saved games is not hacked yet (as far as I know, but for example the Wrapper contains some basic routines for extracting things like game name, map name, turn, player names and addresses etc. from the games, so maybe Davespice knows more about this?).

Yes, I didn't mean anything super-exhaustive, it would be something like you said. Just a program which you could ask what can every side get its hands on by day 5, and you get it; plus some very rough scoring which could be used to quantify how advantageous the starting position of each race is.

I also think that's a great idea, Ramillies! It could really result in some better maps. And considering Nosferons coming map it seems that map making is not dead

I might be willing to sign on if it's not super-XL with 200+ cities.
