This topic is intended as a way to keep track of fantasy TBS games that are going to be released this year, as well as other games that can be good alternatives to AoW for those who need a diversion.

If you know about a fantasy TBS (turn-based strategy) game with a 2012 release date, please post about it in this thread. Also if you know about a less-known game (not necessarily fantasy TBS, and including the ones released before 2012 - we all know about HoMM6, but some game releases might have passed unnoticed by the AoW fans) that you'd like to recommend to fellow AoW players, you can post here too.

Legend of Grimrock has been released today - April 11. I couldn't tell you more about it, I'm terrible with puzzles, and apparently this game features quite a few, so I was planning to give this game a miss myself.

Legend of Grimrock is one my brothers and I would have bought if it was multiplayer. Singleplayer RPGs don't receive my money and their online communitities rarely last beyond a year.

There can be only one.

im pretty sure legend of grimrock is real time

It is.
highly tactical real-time combat
I think it's a contradiction, real-time combat can't be "highly tactical". But maybe I'm wrong...

Highly tactical real-time = military intelligence

I don't get the allusion...

I meant that it's a contradiction, just like military intelligence.

I have just discovered Endless Space. It is a turn-based game set in space. I found some video here.

I liked the preview...it looks like it will be lots of fun to play!

Cheers!

When I posted the link in post #39, I had not yet watched the video.

I just watched the video from that link...

First, I have to warn you that the narrator frequently uses vulgar language...I apologize if you are offended by that.

Second, the narrator does not appear to be a player who makes very wise/smart decisions for sending the unescorted colony ship over to the neighboring system to "colonize over there because that's where the pirates come from" right after losing a scout to those same pirates! (Although, this guy does eventually destroy the pirate)!

Third, I found a nicer/shorter video-peek of gameplay on the alpha version which is offered free to everybody who pre-orders the game according to this guy.

Cheers!

I saw this sentence multiple times, but I don't know what it means, what's so special about May the 4th, is it an American holiday? (In Poland we have a national day on May 3th, it's our Constitution Day.)

It's a reference to the Star Wars franchise.

edit:

I should have said, "It is an implied reference to the Star Wars franchise".

Thanks for telling me, I'm not that big of a fan of Star Wars, so I didn't know (also not being a native speaker, such pronunciation similarities aren't as obvious for me).

Wow; never heard of Eador - the screenshots look nifty; if the game has decent game play and good ai it might be a winner.

Not a TBS and I haven't tried it, so not recommending it one way or another, but Reverie has a special promotion for their MMORPG Dawn of Fantasy. Apparently it's still in need of some PvP balancing, so consider thise something of an Open Beta, but it's still chance to get a valid CD key for free.

I'll make a news post on the main page, and you should be able to find out more at our sister site Dawn of Fantasy Heaven.

Here's Blatent's earlier blurb:
Set in the persistent world of Mythador, Dawn of Fantasy offers you the chance to write your own chapter in the bloody history of this land. Explore a richly-detailed, endless world. Complete dozens of story driven quests in services of kings, wizards, and fellow adventurers. Interact with thousands of other players in both Player vs. Player and Player vs. Environment battles. Build up your villages into mighty empires, and lay siege to your enemies with great trebuchets, the brute strength of the walking woods, mighty ogres, and fire-breathing dragon mercenaries to reign supreme. Play as three different races - elves, men, and orcs, each of which offers a radically different playstyle and has been given a deep, compelling mythology, a dramatic historical background, and a spectrum of complex political ambitions that drive the story and gameplay.

Endless space was released btw. A bit too sterile for my taste, but if it gets some time it might grow into a good game.

I've been playing the FE beta (free due to my wom purchase) and while I disliked wom; fallen enchantress is quite enjoyable. No campaign yet but hopefully the end product will have something decent.

A new tactical/rpg was announced a little while ago that may be of interest to some on this forum.

Chaos Chronicles

http://www.chaos-chronicles.com/

Sounds very promising...unfortunately it is from the developers of the tragic Jagged Alliance 2 remake/sequel/whatever (Back in Action). Their credibility isn't good, but they're saying all the right things, for the most part.

Not Fantasy, but Xcom is out now, and to critical acclaim (whether or not you put any stock in review though...).

Played the demo, and it is fun, but the game seems a bit limiting, I can see myself getting bored after 10-15 hrs...

EDIT: Also, this seems to be the best place to keep trach of MBW: http://www.facebook.com/MastersOfTheBrokenWorld

which has been pushed back to 2013 btw...

Take an old, dirty, hungry, mangy, sick and wet dog and feed him and wash him and nurse him back to health, and he will never turn on you and bite you.

Fallen Enchantress is out.

I have it.

I won't give a full review here, but overall, much better than it's predecessor.

However, I am not sure I like having to start each new game by building your capital every time. considering how many options the game gives you, it's somewhat prescriptive to force you to do this.

It plays more like an rpg with cities thrown in, somewhat similar in that respect to AoW original, but the graphics let it down. Now I don't mean we must have shiny and fancy graphics, but the existing graphics just don't serve. I couldn't find some of my units on the map several times, and had to rely on the unit portraits by the side to get them.

Regarding the U.I.and 'feel' of the game, it's reminiscent of Gal Civ, just this time with swords and sorcery.

Things move along fairly slowly, so you feel like you are reading an interactive book, rather than trying to conquer the world.

It's often hard to understand exactly what you are meant to be doing at any one time, and this coming from a TBS addict and veteran.

Also, there isn't an 'end turn' button as such (You can keep pressing enter if you like). You can select your unit/army, and keep clicking the destination until it gets there, and the turns will be ended automatically. In that respect it is *almost* like a very slow real time simulation, a bit like Europa Universalis and its ilk.

Overall, a 7/10. I would recommend it to people on this forum, but not to anyone else.

It does have some good ideas, but the 'fun' and 'just one more turn' factors aren't *quite* there.

To put that into perspective, I loaded up the new X-Com, and whilst that recycled unit voices and maps to such an extent that I think the developers could be seriously accused of either arrogance or laziness ('India' looks like 'Mexico' looks like the U.S.A-no attempt to provide real variety) I couldn't stop playing for about 6 hours straight (toilet and snack breaks only). Firaxis have managed to get that sweet spot of difficulty and reward and created something very fun that is really somewhat shallow!

Stardock have managed to take something that on paper should rule the TBS genre and, it would seem, managed to make it somewhat creaky.

Anyway, I suspect Fallen enchantress will grow on me as I play it more, and get to understand what is going on.

Take an old, dirty, hungry, mangy, sick and wet dog and feed him and wash him and nurse him back to health, and he will never turn on you and bite you.

This is how man and dog differ.

I'm disappointed with FE and I totally agree with you about the graphics(they really affect my enjoyment) and the lack of a 'one more turn' motivation while playing. Maybe if I had played the disastrous(or so I heard) WoM I would have more of an appreciation for FE's so called 'improvements' but as it stands right now I'm not real impressed.

I think the graphics for FE are fine (better than aow:sm which is just too dated at this point); but there are other aspect to the game mechanics that bug me. On the positive side it has quests (though after enough play through they seem to not be enough). I'm not sure if I would give it a 6,7 or 8. I mean it is fun enough for lots of play through and (perhaps artificial) it can be a bit difficult but I kind of prefer AOW:SM (which I stopped playing 4 years ago). Really hasn't been any 'great' tbs (though I really liked KB:L and KB:AP). Warlock I think is worse than FE overall; I should try shogun2 (not really a TBS but still...). Btw do not judge FE by the rather lame campaign (they call scenario); the sandbox is a bit better. And it is SP only.
