AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
1.5 GB RAM
Hard Drive: 160 GB
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Windows XP Professional

What would I need to upgrade to play on high?
posted 02-28-09 02:02 PM EDT (US)     204 / 350
2GB of fast ram, 8800GTS or higher, probably a 4400+ AMD.

I don't understand RAM. Is there a slow kind and a fast kind?
posted 02-28-09 02:42 PM EDT (US)     206 / 350
Yes. Fast ram usually is around 1066, slow is 266 with much in between.

I've been talking to someone about buying a 9800 GT for $100. I'm trying to figure out how much retailers sell this graphics card for but it seems to me there are 500 different versions of the 9800 GT. This is all the information I have about it: Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT -1 GB DDR 3 RAM. What more information do I need so I know exactly what I'm buying?
btw Daelon, your very helpful, thanks.
posted 03-02-09 09:23 AM EDT (US)     208 / 350
There are a lot of graphics card manufacturers with a 9800GT in their arsenal. There isn't much difference between them. Only real differences are cooling - if you want low noise you'll want a passively cooled card - and the amount of memory they've got.

9800GT's are not quite at all. I don't think any of the 9 series are, its just part of the GPU's now. You can lower the fan temps sure but you risk overheating when you play.

I have been used to assuming my PC can handle most games, but Empire is not "most games" and so am I going to have a problem,

Intel Core 2 Duo @2.40MHz
4 Gig DDR 2Ram
GeForce 8800GTX 768MB
500 Gig Barracuda
Vista 64-Bit

All you techy experts will know more than me, so I hope you can put my mind at ease, a bit late to stop my order incase its not as the game is on its way, the faint sound of thousands of men marching can be heard

Thanks Daelon,

I actually tested the settings out on the demo and could play with most things ultra, that said, I don't use things like anistropic and antialiasing, shadows also off, and it ran like silk, however the full game may not be so good, I don't know

I guess trying all the settings and tweaking things is the order of the day when it comes

Jekyll- Don't base a games full potential & performance off a demo. It has been optimized somewhat, but expect better with the release.

Hudler- Upgrade to an 8800GTX or higher.

My HP Laptop.
I have 2 Ghz (Core 2 duo)
4 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS (512MB)

I played Medium-High on the demo. (Everything medium, trees low, units and ships high)

I finally post in this great thread. These parts do my dad and I want to buy for our whole new PC:
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE
Memory: OCZ Platinum Dual Channel OCZ2P10664GK
Videocard: Sapphire HD 4870 X2

Now, I don't know what it all means, so any feedback would be appreciated.

Yep, it's true, having no sig is boring. But so is this one. Which makes my point... relatively pointless.
Can a point be a point when it is pointless?

Hudler, it depends on your CPU whether or not your 8800GTX will bottleneck.

Just checked the minimum specs thread above and I think I should be able to run Empire: Total War with decent settings (not unlike Rome on the old PC):

• AMD Athlon64 X2 6400+ (3.0 GHz dual-core CPU)
• WindowsXP64 Pro SP2
• ASUS Crosshair mainboard
• 4 GB PC2 6400 SDRAM
• 512 MB EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8800GT vidcard
• on-bard 7.1 integrated sound

Just about the only issue that I've seen with TW games so far has been frame-skip on Medieval II sieges with large armies. I don't know if Empire resolves the issue but I'll be looking forward to installing the game.

As for the new PC, I am considering upgrading the graphics card or installing additional RAM cards down the road, hopefully without the need to update or replace the OS...

will fit in my tower and will be compatible?
cause there was something about having too much of a graphics card for your computer, and the card is apparently very tall

Bottlenecking depends on the CPU and of the speed of the GPU.

That does not mean "too much graphics"

Roughly how tall is the case? Is it a mid-atx? full-atx?

Komplett.se, a site where you can buy computers/computer parts (it is in Swedish, there are versions for the other Nordic countries + Belgium, Netherlands and Ireland I think).

By the way, I guess the AMD Phenom II X4 920 is AMD's counterpart to the i7

Thanks for the reply, it was very quick.

XFX PVT98GYDLU GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit

they are much smaller than that 9800 gtx so im hoping i can get one of these cause they are bettter than the alternative 7 series you said before..

well either of them are better than the one i have now, which cant run empire without skipping and running slow.

there has to be something that is the right size and be able to run on atleast medium graphics..

and how is it the same size?, in comparison to the connector things this one will fit, but the 9800 gtx was like the length of my forearm almost.
