Topic Subject: ROL patches & Windows XP SP2 - FIXED
posted 10-08-06 00:52 AM EDT (US)
G'Day
I just don't know what i have to do to get these patches to work? I've tried everything!
The readme file that comes with the game says that Rise of Legends doesn’t install with Windows XP SP2.
I didn't want to uninstall SP2 so i left it running, and installed ROL anyway. The game installed and ran no problem. I just can't get it to update!
Every time i try and download (with a dial up connection) i get the dreaded error message:
invalid patch: Retal-0606.1401.0002-0608.0901.0000.RTP
I've tried downloading maybe 8 times now going through the online section and also the check for updates. Every time i get the same message. That file is the last update the big file.

I downloaded 7 of the 8 patch files from:
http://www.mikimetropolis.com/patches/

Now when i get that error message 0606.1401.0002-0608.0901.000.RTP i noticed the same file when i checked it on my hard drive, was only 10mb instead of being the 73mb. So obviously i get cut off before i download the complete file.

I read on some of the other topics here that people will send you the patch file and to use the updater. So i then tried replacing the 0606.1401.0002-0608.0901.000.RTP file with the one i downloaded from the website which was the full 73mb and then run the updater. Nothing happens. I see the updater flash on the screen for a split second and that’s it nothing updates.

Could this be from Windows XP SP2? Is anybody else running ROL with the updates with XP SP2 or is everybody running windows XP SP1?

I also have Rise of Nations Thrones and Patriots and that updates no problem just ROL.

People’s solution here seems to be keep trying and trying and you might get lucky, so by that it seems there could be a problem with the server or something. It's driving me insane. I tried contacting bighugegames a couple of times by email but no reply.

I'm using XPsp2 and i had no problems in downloading patches.
Did you tryied to down them from inside the game? Or just the updater in the game directory?

Mind the following:

1) The updates are curently 7 and we expect one more.
2) Try uninstalling the game and install again.
3) Hopefully you are not using a cracked version of the game 4) which would result to problems in installing updates.
5) Try making a new account in XP and install the game there.
6) Disable any firewalls or antivirus programms.
7) Finnaly the error may happen due to 56k connection the 7th
patch is a large one and maybe the server times out because it sees minimum or no progress.

Good Luck.

Hey Djmid thanks for the reply and your help.
At least now i know it's not XP SP2 and didn't waste my time with that.
I've tried downloading from inside the game. I always get the invalid patch error.
I've also tried copying the files into the patch directory and run the updater, this does nothing. The updater flashes on the screen for a second and thats it. Perhaps there is something wrong with my updater file? Is your updater file 1,431kb large?
1)Funny you say there are only 7 updates because i'm defiantly downloading 8 of them. It says downloading update 1 of 8 etc. Perhaps your game installs at a later version than mine?
The game i have once installed is version:
0.0604.1602.0000.13.0
The 8 update patch files i try and download are:
RETAIL-0604.1602-0604.2001.RTP 10,660kb
RETAIL-0604.2001.0000-0605.0101.0100.RTP 7,600kb
RETAIL-0605.0101.0000-0605.1701.0000.RTP 13,673kb
RETAIL-0605.1701.0000-0605.1701.0100.RTP 1,101kb
RETAIL-0605.2403.0001-0606.1401.0000.RTP 15,647kb
RETAIL-0606.1401.0000-0606.1401.0001.RTP 1,363kb
RETAIL-0606.1401.0001-0606.1401.0002.RTP 4,321kb
RETAIL-0606.1401.0002-0608.0901.0000.RTP 72,969kb
2) Yeah tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times now.
3)No i bought the game, second hand through ebay but it's still a retail version with original disc's and manual etc. Perhaps i have an old dud version or something. Maybe thats why i need the extra patch file, i wonder if this is why my updater might not work?
4)Nope retail version.
5)Don't know what you mean by make a new account?
6) Yep antivirus and firewalls are disabled.
7)This may be the problem. Because sometimes i get cut off before i download all updates files. Last night the last update which is about 73mb big when i woke up to see once again invalid patch i noticed it was only 20mb instead of being the full 73mb.

If point 7 is why i can't get the updates that sucks. Surely they should realise not everybody has broadband yet. If it is timing out they should give you the option to download the files one at a time or something. So maybe my only solution is to go to broadband which I'm not to keen on just yet anyway.

Hey astro. "Gday" lol, From oz too mate?
I got this message after deliberately cancelling the update session because it was taking so long and i just wanted to keep playing. From then on the message kept coming up. Now i think all i did was uninstall (deleted the folder too which i think was left behind) and re-installed. Then did the update from in game without interupting this time. Do you turn screen savers and power management stuff off? I am running XPSP2 and have broadband (internode).

Maybe the "create new account" option is talking about the user section of the menu system that allows you to have multiple profiles/players. By creating a new one all your settings are then default again.

G'Day BamH1
Yeah from down under

I have had success in getting the patches. I had to go around a mates house and hook up to broadband.

Basically the way the patches are set-up Big Huge Games
are not supporting dial-up connections.

Even though my connection was 52k, it was taking around 8 hours to download the patch files. Big Huge Games server where the patches are located would time out after about 6hours and disconnect me. Then next time you would have to start from scratch again.

I've emailed this to Big Huge Games with no response at all. There customer support is just pathetic.
