Topic Subject: Modding Support?
posted 12-24-05 05:00 AM EDT (US)
As some of you may know I come from AoMH and AoE3H and you also may know that I'm crazy about modding. However, AoM and AoE3 were quite a pain to mod with totally no support from ES.

Now I think this game looks pretty promising and I was wondering, does Big Huge game offer atleast some support? Maybe some tools or something.

BHG actually SUPPORTS modding. Each one of their data files come with an explanation of everything in it, and they have given 3DSMax exporters in the past.

You'll have a great time modding for RoL .

Wow, that's awesome. I wish they all did that.

I will also probably make some modding tools like i did for RoN depending on what BHG provides or not provides.

I've never played RoN so I don't know how the game works (about modding I mean). Is it similar to AoM/AoE3? Like anim files, proto, that sort of stuff?

Its quite different i think...
if they keep it much like RON, then texture/skins will be easy to mod..just a TGA file..models are also separate for each unit/building so no need to pack into some special format. unit/building stats and rule parameters are all in xml.

Ok, cool so you don't need to convert the textures first. That's great.
About the models, I did see some buildings collapse, explode etc. so that either means it uses Havoc or it's predefined, what is it?
And the stats etc. in the Age games were also in .xml, well .xmb really, but you could convert it to .xml so that shouldn't be too hard.

Man I'm going to love this game.

Rise of Legends uses an all-new fully 3D graphics engine supplimented by the AGEIA PhysX engine. http://www.ageia.com/
Games which uses it: Unreal Engine 3,City of Villains

So that means if u have the physics card (which maybe rare at the moment) the physics effects will be even better.

Hey Argalius. I know how you feel, I come from modding AOM and AOE3 and I am really interested in modding for a game that actually supports modding. I also haven't played Rise of Nations, so I don't know what to expect besides what people have said.

I made a few texture mods for AOE3, but I cannot stand that game. So, I'm going to continue modding for AOM until RoL comes out. I applied for The Legends of the Third Age modpack and they're going to see if they have any work for me. So, that will keep me occupied until RoL comes out

Does anyone know if you can model new units for RoL?

Assuming they release and exporter like they did in RON, and you have 3dsmax then u should be able to add models without any trouble. Go to the RON Heaven site, and check out what they released for RoN and that maybe an indication of what they should be providing for ROL assuming they do the same thing: http://ron.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=25

In fact that mod kit includes some source files in 3dsmax so u can directly mod a model, and not have to do it from scratch and figure out how to bone and animate it. They gave out the archer, rifleman, light cav and tank models. So if you wanted to mod the tank to any tank u like based on the 3dsmax source file they provided.

But this would be a good question to add in the Questions for BHG thread http://rol.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=4,2,,30
to see what sort of support they will have..but the structure of the game, i would say it already is easier to mod then AOM/AOE

Quoted from Argalius:

My real question is, what kind of support do modders get, like what programs, tutorials, etc?
And are custom models supported in the game, because I saw that you're using a physics engine for the game and I can imagine that's pretty hard to create physics for the usual modders among us, including myself.

Quoted from GreyPawn:

Rise of Legends will definitely feature a greater modding capability than Rise of Nations, making it easier to customize and add new content. From what I understand, we may also be releasing tools to add custom models as well, but that has not yet been announced. As for tutorials, that will probably fall into my realm, and while I can't promise anything concrete at the moment, I will certainly put it on my to-do list for post-launch.
