Well since it was a month ago I guess at least some of the interest has waned.
I was a very good DotA player on BNet...bringing it to RoL means a lot to me so I'm going to work hard on this.
I dunno about design teams or anything, but this is a really big project so anybody who wants to help just post here.
Here are my thoughts so far.
3 "sides," one Vinci-themed, one Cuotl-themed, and one Alin-themed. Unfortunately we are capped at 8 players max in RoL, whereas in Wc3 you could have up to 12. In Wc3, 2 AI players controlled each side, leaving 10 slots for human players, or 5v5 action.
Obviously the first dilemna here is the player count. My current best thought on this issue is to take 1 AI player to control all three cities. The cities are far enough apart, of course, that they will never fight each other anyway. Problem then becomes stopping the creepwaves and even the player heroes from attacking their own bases. Possibly a trigger-wizard can see the way around this - I can't. But we can't afford to take 3 of our 8 slots to have one AI for each city.
Another idea is a "civil-wars" themed DotA. At the beginning of the game, it randomly chooses between Cuotl, Vinci, and Alin. All three cities (along with their respective units and heroes) would be that type.
Yet another possbility is to leave it with th eclassic formula of 1 base vs 1 base. This would mean 1 AI per side, this the goal of reaching 3v3 play is met, with two players taken out of the mix.
So then what makes it unique from Wc3's DotA, if it uses the same formula of 1 side vs 1 side.
I'm so glad you asked that.
My thought is to make each side unique, even as RoL is. In Wc3/DotA, both sides play exactly the same.
I am thinking of using a variant of the civilwar variant, which will make the sides either random or else a popup for the leader to choose the sides. No clue if a popup window type of thing can even be done in RoL, but that's what I'm thinking.
So as an example, the Cuotl would have to use Energy to activate their heroes' abilites, same as in RoL-the-game. They would gain Energy by attacking enemy units.
Vinci I'm thinking a stamina-type effect. They use power to fuel their abilities, so perhaps the longer they are in battle the more "stamina" they lose until they can no longer fight, and must retreat behind the lines to recharge.
For the Alin I admit I have no ideas.
Now, for the shops. Again, this would probably take a trigger-wizard.
I'm thinking that the "items" should be made technologies. Sure, that isn't as cool as items, but there is no Inventory system or whatnot. So, again, an example.
Base level "items" such as shall we say Gloves of Haste cost Tim. So continuing with possibly the most used item in DotA, our player then buys the Boots of Speed. Now at the recipe shop level 1, the technology "item" for Power Treads becomes available. This also costs Tim, and is used to "fuse" the previous items. Actually, it provides a boost to the effect of both Gloves and Boots.
Another thought that I had that I would like to get in here, is that making units drop Gold, as in Wc3-dota, is going to be very easy. All that needs be done is base a global technology for both sides off of Scavenge, to make units drop Tim to their killer.
