Hello,
I was checking out the concept arthere done by Ted Terranova who worked on Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, Ascendant and other games and projects.
If you check out the 3 mockups he posted as concepts for the original RON you can see that it was a completely different concept for the game than what eventually became RON as we know it. It looks like they had a 3d engine in mind, and the buildings are a lot more detailed, with defensive walls and trains as an option. For me this looks really exciting, and it seems maybe they chose to pare the final game or the initial ideas down to a more less intensive graphics style probably so more people could play it at the time of its release in 2003.
Here are the 3 screens:
Another way to look at the concept art is a potential mod for RON/ROL inside another rts game or prototype of Rise of Nations 2, if it was ever made. Inthis article here about Big Huge Games at Pax East 2010 and this article here, you can read how after Rise of Legends was released the expansion, Rise of Nations 2, God: the Game, and Ascendant the rpg BHG was working on were all cancelled. Some of the team and some of the work from Ascendant was carried over to the rpg Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning out February 2012, with Copernicus the mmo out sometime in the future.
So I just thought the concept art was pretty cool, I tried searching for more online but couldn't find anything else. These concepts aren't in theHeavengames RON gallery, so maybe someone could add them in there as well?
It's always possible BHG might do something after Amalur, some developers likeTilted Mill released an expansion in 2008 for one of their games, Children of the Nile, 4 years after the original game came out in 2004 and there still was interest.
Also, there is a lot of untapped potential and talent out there, in the independent game world for example after over 10 years of work Wildfire Games is nearing completionon their game 0 AD, which can be interpreted as a 3d remake of the original Age of Empires, but more realistically detailed. So there are always options for potential games, it just depends on who can do it and how long it takes.
