I would be waiting as well simply because of the unit of archers. Depending on where the elephants will be you can probably do some damage before contact.
If they sit defensively in the town square you could walk up some hard to reach streets and fire off some flaming arrows. You will be in range but they will find it very hard to get to that unit. If they elephants are more aggressive, you might be able to shoot them from over what looks like a simple wooden wall.
I was also thinking that was an immortal looking unit, is that the case?

Nice. I was looking closely at the pictures that make this mod different from regular RTW.
I thought that assault would be more costly...but then I had overlooked the use elephants against them.
The way the enemy general was shot up. Does that mean it was also a one point type of cavalry and not a two hit point type of eastern general?

Hi
Try to have your general unit always kill at least one enemy soldier. There is a bad coward trait triggered by generals having no kills. Its not a high chance but its there and can be avoided.
