Topic Subject: HOWTO: Do a complete, manual uninstall of RTW.
posted 15 November 2005 15:20 EDT (US)
====== FULL MANUAL UNINSTALL PROCEDURE ======
(Wartain rev 1.53, 23Dec2005)

PROBLEMS/SYMPTOMS:
"There was a problem uninstalling the game and now I can't reinstall."
Or, "RTW does not work now, but it was working in the past!"
Or, "I want to totally remove all RTW and just start over again!"
Or, "When I try to install RTW, it only tries to 'uninstall'"
Or, "I've uninstalled RTW, but RTW still appears in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs!"

IMPORTANT: This is not tested with BI (I have not bought BI yet), though it should fix most BI install/reinstall problems.

INTRO:
This is the procedure I use in fixing RTW computers. It has been used a lot (I just tested & revised it again with bad installs of Patch 1.5), but read and understand it before plowing in. It will solve about 80% of the most common install/reinstall problems, and is based on official Activision procedures. If registry entries/program files are missing/nonexistant when at a step to remove them, just continue anyway. Do not arbitrarily skip steps unless you understand why you are doing so. The penalty, however, is just that you could have wasted your time and need to do the whole thing again if your next install attempt fails. This procedure will allow RTW to reinstall in many cases.

ASSUMPTIONS:
1. No overclocking
2. System has a known stable power supply
3. Motherboard BIOS and Video Card BIOS is up to date, and properly configured
4. System is clean & relatively free of dust inside (e.g., no heating/fan problems)
5. No viruses (strongly recommend NOD32 over all other AV programs!)
6. No spyware or adware (suggest freeware Spybot - Search & Destroy)
7. No rootkits: since early 2005, that your have never had any Sony music CD in your computer (specifically, that the undetectable Sony rootkit has ever been installed you your machine... even if it has been supposedly 'removed')
8. Disable Anti-virus protection & close all background programs and unnecessary processes (use CTRL-ALT-DEL and also look in the Tray)
9. Assuming game was installed to default C:\, with Windows XP SP2 system default directory names
10: Before beginning, back up any RTW files you want to keep, like savegames, preferences.txt, etc.
11. Normal RTW uninstall (e.g., via Control Panel) tried, but failed.
12. You are not using cracks, hacks, nocd, warez files, cloak/hide software, etc.
13. You use an original RTW disk #1 to run the game.

WARNING:
This procedure is for an Advanced user. Some parts are based/quoted on official Acitvision solutions. Read/understand the whole procedure before beginning. Do not attempt registry changes if you are not comfortable editing the Registry (however, you will not be able to do the manual uninstall without Regedit). It is a good idea to back up your registry FIRST, and also KNOW HOW TO RESTORE IT! Know this: Altering the *wrong* things in the registry could result in complete operating system failure. Get someone to help you if you are not sure!

DETAILED PROCEDURE:
You can manually remove RTW from your system in 4 steps:
STEP 1. Remove the registry entries
STEP 2. Remove the game files
STEP 3. Remove the RomeTW.ini
STEP 4. Remove the Installer files

Note 01: If any of the following keys are already removed (e.g., you carefully look, and they are simply not there, then go to the next step. Remember which ones are gone and post about it.
Note 02: It may help viewing to turn off WORD WRAP in notepad (or your editor).
Note 03: The Objective of STEP 1 is to delete certain registry keys.
Note 04: In Regedit, you can enable View - StatusBar and look at the bottom of the Regedit window to see the full name of the key you are looking at -- Take a look at it to carefully VERIFY you are deleting the correct key.
Note 05: The Appendix lists the keys which will be removed.

---- STEP 1. Remove the registry entries ----

1-23) Go back one level to Installer: Click the "+" next to Installer
1-24) Click the "+" next to Products
1-25) Delete the key(s) named: 4089999C-6CB7-4F9D-A2F6-DB158DBF91FB
B6BB246A-D1AC-2414-D84D-13C8F3D38C43
A642BB6B-CA1D-4142-8DD4-318C3F3DC834
A5D65411-8E73-4C85-AD80-9FE8B7391CF9

1-26) Go back to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE.
1-27) Click the "+" next to SEGA
1-28) Delete the key named "Rome Total War - patch 1.3"

Click & highlight "My Computer", then choose Edit - Find (or CTRL-F), and type in "Rome - Total War" as shown.
Regedit will find the first match.
Look at the Parent Key, and if it is relevant, delete it.
Use the F3 key to keep searching until the whole registry is done.

1-29) Cleanup. Now you need to search the registry for 4 patterns:
DB158DBF91FB (does it match 4089999C-6CB7-4F9D-A2F6-DB158DBF91FB ?)
13C8F3D38C43 (does it match B6BB246A-D1AC-2414-D84D-13C8F3D38C43 ?)
318C3F3DC834 (does it match A642BB6B-CA1D-4142-8DD4-318C3F3DC834 ?)
9FE8B7391CF9 (does it match A5D65411-8E73-4C85-AD80-9FE8B7391CF9 ?)
"Rome - Total War"
1-30) Delete the related Parent Keys associated with each relevant match.

What is a "Parent Key"? It is the related key that contains relevant RTW or Activision or Sega or The Creative Assembly data.
The keys that have long numeric names (called CLSIDs) in the Install/Installer/Uninstall-related parts of the registry are the ones that frequently cause re-install failures.

What to look for when deleting a RTW-related key.

1-31) A "Rome - Total War" entry should not appear in Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs
1-32) If the RTW install process later attempts to Uninstall RTW first, then you need to repeat 1-29 thru 1-31.

1-33) Close the registry editor

Note 06: At this point, the hardest part is over; your registry is cleaned of commonly relevant RTW entries (though dozens may still remain).
Note 07: If you want to keep your savegames, copy them from the Saves directory now!

---- STEP 2. Remove the game files ----

2-1) Double-click My Computer.
2-2) Double-click the C:\ drive.
2-3) Double-click Program Files.
2-4) Double-click Total War
2-5) Right-click on the Rome: Total War folder and choose delete.

Note 08: Your RTW program files are now removed.

---- STEP 3. Remove the RomeTW.ini file ----

3-1) Click the Start - Find (or Search) - Files & Folders
3-2) Search your C:\ drive for a file called RomeTW.ini
3-3) Delete the RomeTW.ini file (it should be in C:\WINDOWS, e.g., C:\WINDOWS\RomeTW.ini)

---- STEP 4. Remove the Installer files ----

4-1) Set folder display otions to show hidden folders and files
4-2) Explorer - Tools - Options - View - Choose "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
4-3) Explorer - Tools - Options - View - UNCHECK "Hide protected operating system files"

4-4) Navigate to folder (it is normally hidden) C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation\
4-5) If present, delete folders called
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation\{4089999C-6CB7-4F9D-A2F6-DB158DBF91FB}
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation\{B6BB246A-D1AC-2414-D84D-13C8F3D38C43}
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation\{A642BB6B-CA1D-4142-8DD4-318C3F3DC834}
C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation\{A5D65411-8E73-4C85-AD80-9FE8B7391CF9}

4-6) Navigate to the folder C:\Windows\Installer\
4-7) If present, delete folders called
C:\Windows\Installer\{4089999C-6CB7-4F9D-A2F6-DB158DBF91FB}
C:\Windows\Installer\{B6BB246A-D1AC-2414-D84D-13C8F3D38C43}
C:\Windows\Installer\{A642BB6B-CA1D-4142-8DD4-318C3F3DC834}
C:\Windows\Installer\{A5D65411-8E73-4C85-AD80-9FE8B7391CF9}

4-8) *Reboot* your machine (needed to remove the files loaded at boot/RTW start!)

4-9) Check for a "Rome - Total War" entry in Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs; if it appears, repeat 1-34 thru 1-36.
4-10) If the RTW install process attempts to Uninstall RTW first, then you need to repeat 1-29 thru 1-31, or possibly redo this whole procedure.

Note 09: Codecs -- RTW needs to have the codecs of WMP9 or WMP10 fully installed and functional (naturally, you also need a working sound card and good drivers). With Windows XP, if you suspect there is a problem with codecs (e.g., you may have installed other codecs and messed things up), then you might want to uninstall WMP10, then reinstall WMP10 if you suspect you have any codec-related problems. Ideally, you should uninstall WMP10, then reinstall it (purely to get the correct codecs installed an properly registered) before you make a clean install of RTW.

Note 10: You can download the WMP10 install for XP driectly from Microsoft for free:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/default.aspx.

Note 11: You can now do a clean install (normal or desktop).

Note 12: If RTW installs successfully, then you have done this procedure properly.

Note 13: If you are unclear about a step, post verbosely. Do not just keep repeating this procedure if you know you followed each step properly.

APPENDIX: These are the registry keys which Step 1 removes (including all key contents):

This is amazingly similar to the method I put in the forum guide here. Though this is more in-depth. Nice work.

I'm sure our sources were the same . As I mentioned in my first paragraph, "This is comprehensive, and based on the original text from Activision." The sources of the numbered procedures are the Activision texts/procedures from three places on the Activision site, pasted and reedited so it makes better sense. The problem with other posts I've seen at this site is that the full procedure is not explained in one place (Activision help itself has the same problem). It is best to perform the whole procedure, at one time, including all the registry steps (HKCU, HKLM, and Uninstall!), to fully eliminate the game manually. BTW, Cheesewiz' sticky has an incomplete procedure posted. And for XP users, WMP10 might as well be uninstalled/reinstalled to eliminate codecs installation as an issue.

does this meen that i do not have to edit the registry??? casue it looks like i can do it but if i mess up that the consiquences are dire... so i dont want to edit if if i dont have to. in one paragrahp i think it kind of suggjested that you did not have to edit the registry. is this right?

No. However, if you will tell me the part that made you think that, I will rewrite it so others won't get misled . The only part I think that may suggest it is the disclaimer that if you don't think you are comfortable editing (e.g., following the instructions properly for whatever reason), then do the smart thing (don't edit). Better to keep one problem (RTW not running properly) than to make new problems in other programs or even in your whole operating system. Get someone to help you if you feel (or know) you can't do the edit procedure.

I know, I know... everyone ssays "beware of the registry" "the registry is sensitive" "ooo-ahhh--ooo watch out for the registry" blah blah. Well, the same applies if your are browsing in your computer with Explorer... moving or deleting certain files can leave your system unbootable. Yes, be careful with the registry... don't get sloppy, in a hurry, or careless. Understand exactly what you want to do BEFORE clicking the mouse with a change. In other words, follow directions. If you get confused, stop and ask someone, or post.

I have 9-year olds in this area editing their registries (I show them how), and to date, in 5 years, not a single screw up. They open regedit, do the job (fix or remove registry entries), and exit regedit. But if someone is the jittery type, or wild mouse clicker, or can't/won't follow directions, then I say keep out of the registry.

In most cases, however, if you actually do screw up XP, you can reboot and hit F8 during the reboot, and boot to Last Known Good, complete with your last good booting registry .

Here is a via media (middle road): do an automatic RTW uninstall, then look at your registry to see if the RTW entries (see procedure) are gone. If they are gone, you need not edit anything. If they are there, however, you will need to delete them as per the procedure.

If you can do an automatic uninstall, then reinstall RTW successfully, you do not need to do a manual uninstall. However, it seems rare, if ever, that RTW completely uninstalls itself correctly. Activision knows this, and to their credit, they explain click by click, how to remove the game from your machine.

Bottom line: Yes, you will likely need to edit the registry. Get used to it.... and yes, you can do it. Respect the registry, but remember: the registry is merely there to configure your windows installation for you and your hardware/software. Sometimes you must tell it directly what you want done... and that's the purpose of regedit: to explicitly tell your machine what you expect it to do!

when I try to install Barbarian invasion and a window pops up saying that no prior installation of RTW was found, even though RTW is installed in the default location. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and I get the samething. Should I do a Manual uninstall and then reinstall RTW to get BI to work?

I'm replying in the thread you started for this, here.
posted 13 January 2006 13:14 EDT (US)     11 / 14
It is very likely that someone already posted this before, but as I still not see it in this thread, I thought I'd might add it.
I recently had some problems with a mod (RTR to be exact), so I had to do an uninstall and complete reinstall. Unfortunately, I'm not *that* well with computers, so I had a look at this thread (actually, RTW is installing right now). Which was, unfortunately again, a bit too much for me. I then recalled that I already had done a proper reinstall without using the registry. You simply have to delete every RTW related file.

--- Uninstalling RTW for Dummies ---

1) First, make sure all program files are removed. Do this either by using the uninstall option on the CD, or by deleting the Activision/Rome - Total War folder manually.
2) Next, start searching your computer. Set the search option to "all files and folders", and use the keywords "rtw" and "rome". Most likely you'll find some (especially when you've manually deleted the RTW folder), but when you insert your CD, it still won't give the install option.
3) Thus, there still are files on your pc. These are in the "WINDOWS" folder. What you now have to do is: go back to the search menu. Again, use rome as a keyword, and set the search folder to C:\WINDOWS. Perform the search. When finished, you'll find some files, most of them RTW related. Delete those (be careful not to harm any other files), and you should be safe.
4) Now insert the RTW CD 1. You should be able to install RTW again. If not, check to make sure every single RTW file is deleted.

I'm not sure whether this works unlimited, or at a certain moment your pc will say "bye bye" and blow up itself, but until now this has worked perfectly with me. The trick is in the WINDOWS folder.

You're right, the full uninstall procedure is a lot. It does take time. And one must be careful when doing it... but it addresses about a dozen different common failed uninstall issues. In some cases, its only necessary to do a part of the procedure... if one is able to determine what's necessary to do.

Your procedure, if followed, can cause a person to be unable to re-install RTW. What you are evidently unaware of is the registry entries, and how RTW installshield examines those entries in determining how to install RTW.

For instance, if a person does the step#1 you posted, and summarily deletes just the program files of RTW, not even the "The Creative Assembly" entries are deleted.

The other part of #1 is the automatic uninstall. That is the place to begin. If it works (it often does work, but not always), then the whole manual uninistall procedure is not necessary.

In your step#2, you are not searching for all the right things. But then, they are not scattered around the PC. They are only in 2 places, the install directory and the single file in \Windows.

In #3, there are not fileS (plural) in windows, but exactly one. That file is: C:\WINDOWS\RomeTW.ini

Did you find other RTW files in \Windows? CA does not put any more there, and their installer does not check nor care if any other are there.

About #4, again, you have only removed files. YOu have not cleaned the registry. If you were able to reinstall RTW with your procedure, then you must have attempted an auto-uninstall, which took care of the registry for you.

A much much simpler, but identical result, of your procedure is this:

DETAILED PROCEDURE:
You can manually remove RTW from your system in 2 steps:
STEP 1. Remove the game files
STEP 2. Remove the RomeTW.ini

The above is my original summary, sans the original Step 1 and Step 4 (which are the 'tough' registry steps).

So if it worked for you, then great. But it won't solve some problems, and likely won't work unless you attempt an auto-uninstall first.

However, it was a good post you made, and will likely help others who may wonder the same thing. Now people know more about the reasons, which is always good.

Clearly, a pc is a much more complicated thing than I ever thought possible .

Well, my mistake. I suppose I was trying to make the text a little more lively .

When I perform a search in the windows folder, I find exactly five files: RomeTW.ini, ROMETOTALREALISM_6.0_GOLD.EXE-1945833E.pf, ROMETOTALREALISM_6.2_MUSIC_AD-2D7844FD.pf, ROMETW.EXE-36006994.pf, and ROMETW_1.2_PATCH.EXE-0DB11A8D.pf. These are in the WINDOWS\Prefetch folder, but as they're all RTR files, I suppose they mean nothing to the average RTW user. My excuses.

No worries. You had a great post, and very good points that I'm sure people wonder about but just don't "dare" post.

I don't have the RTR mod installed, and so I have not noted what RTR leaves. That is actually a good clue that I will keep an eye one, and may help people in the future... about the prefetch. Prefetch allows XP to load certain apps BEFORE the user ever asks for it, thus speeding up the "apparant" loading times. There are 4 kinds, and I need to look at what's happening with different system settings (registry) that control prefetch. This actually can cause both a crash and/or a bad uninstall... in theory. And my current uninstall process does not look for those files. But the OS is supposed to "referee" it if the files are damaged or not present, so the user would not be aware of the "problem." And again in theory, the OS would scratch the files from prefetch automatically. But with XP, I don't believe it till I see it .

There are actually more files that need deleting on the PC for a reinstall to happen in some cases... they are the InstallShield related files, not normal RTW gameplay files. That's the files in my Step 4 that are being removed.

Anyway, good questions. If you have more, feel free to post.
