Topic Subject: Game runs fine for 20 minutes, then starts speeding up. Very Odd! [dual-core cure]
posted 09 January 2006 13:49 EDT (US)
Hello,

Just got this fantastic game two days ago, but I'm almost ready to quit, I'm so frustrated...

Here is the problem:

Everything runs perfectly for the first 20 minutes or so.

As I continue on the Prologue mode, performance starts to stutter, my mouse will jump around the screen, the waves on the ocean on the campaign map will lag, and most oddly, my battles will SPEED up.

If I move my mouse to the edge of the screen during a battle, my camera will rotate extremely fast and I will not be able to control where I am looking. A command given to my troops looks like it is being carried out at 4X speed, even though I have doubled checked that everything is at normal speed.

Most oddly, when I change graphics modes, it will pop up a 15 second timer asking me if I want to keep the changes. This timer runs EXTREMELY fast, counting down from 15 in about 3 seconds.

I've experienced lag in other games slowing down gameplay, but not speeding them up!

I am running the latest patched version (1.5) of RTW. When this problem comes up, I have to reboot the PC, and the game will start running fine again for about 20 minutes.

I have tried manually ending the explorer.exe process and restarting it, this does not work.

I just built this computer, these are the specs:

Athlon 64 X2 3800+
DFI Lanparty nF4-Ultra D Motherboard
2 GB Corsair Memory
eVGA Geforce 6800 GS

I am running Windows XP SP2 w/ all updates.
nVidia 81.98 drivers for my video card
nForce4_amd_6.70_winxp2k_english drivers for my chipset

This problem seems to have all the symptoms of a memory leak, but I could find no mention of other people with this issue after poking around on this forum for a while.

If anyone has any ideas about how I can fix this, please please please respond.

Thanks,
Shawn

An interesting description.

1. Questions:
- What is your exact RTW install state, right now (e.g., RTW 1.4 BI installed, no mods, no patches?).
- Has RTW ever worked in that PC before?
- Do other 3D games work?
- Have you modded, or installed any mods at all?
- Are both cores enabled?

2. Post your RTW Preferences.txt: Copy all (CRTL-A) - Paste into a post (CTRL-V).

3. Post Output of DXDiag; to post your DXDiag: Start - Run - DXDiag - Save All Information - Open the saved file with Notepad - Copy all (CRTL-A) - Paste into a post (CTRL-V).

A first thought is to use one CPU, since RTW has been reported to have problems in some users' dual-core installlations. There are reports that certain issues are cleared up when one core is used in RTW. However, many seem able to use it with both cores. But the programmers did not develop RTW with dual-core dev kits. BTW, dual-CPU works fine, just not dual-core. MS expects that by the end of this year, this sort of thing won't be an issue in new software releases anymore.

If it is not a hardware issue, e.g., dual core related, then the most likely issue is driver conflict or registry issue.

I sit here tonight installing 2 machines, making about 100-300 custom registry entries on each one. However, I have not been working with hardware close enough to yours to observe such an effect. The 81.98 drivers are stable and well-recieved, particularly in dual-core. There are 82.12 drivers evidently even more suited to dual-core, but they are not officially up on the nVidia ite yet.

In the end, I know exactly what I would do, no hesitation. Install a pristine OS, using a custom install OS created from nLite. But even a stock XP SP2 install+updates and driver installs, and no extra stuff, should be enough to get a properly running RTW.

If the problem returns to a pristin install, then install yet another pristine OS, and use stock drivers (e.g., MS). Install only what drivers you must.

I think you will find that the issue is driver-related, and it is something in the hardware drivers, though not in 81.98, causing it. It is a gut guess that the problem lies in Sound or Network or the combinations of both, perhaps with certain services, and maybe even mouse drivers, causing the issue.

Wartrain, I really appreciate you taking time to help me with this.

1. Questions:
- What is your exact RTW install state, right now (e.g., RTW 1.4 BI installed, no mods, no patches?).

RTW 1.5

- Has RTW ever worked in that PC before?

Nope, this is the first time I have installed it on this computer. My brother has it installed on his machine also, same version, same patches. He claims to have no such problem.

- Do other 3D games work?

I have played Counter Strike: CZ and Battlefield 2 with no issues.

- Have you modded, or installed any mods at all?

No Mods

- Are both cores enabled?

Yes

2. Post your RTW Preferences.txt: Copy all (CRTL-A) - Paste into a post (CTRL-V).

OK, I looked at all your settings and drivers. Nothing appears out of the ordinary, except the dual-core and RTW. Then I looked through a big pile of notes I keep. A dude from a few months back (October sometime) had an AMD3800+ dual core, same symptoms... jerky, then battle speeded way up. Problem was indeed solved when he disabled one of the cores through the process screen.

As a result of reading at AMD, it looks to me like you may not have the Dual-core drivers installed.

Try the link by J_Mann in this post.

AMD also explains how to set affinity for incompatible programs. Run RTW with one core, and see if the problems go away.

Ack...I swear I posted back here, but I must have composed the message but never hit "post."

In short, everything runs perfectly now. It is definitely a dual-core compatibility issue. I have tried running the game to the stutter stage, CTRL-ALT-DEL out to turn off one of the cores, and coming back in to find everything perfectly functional again.

Thank you so much for your help, I would have never guessed that having the second CPU was slowing it down in this manner. No wonder people ask for you by name on these forums. =)

Thank you so much!

ahh, I've had this problem too. thanks, I never even knew you could disable one of the cores...

This issue is one that even developers of software do not properly understand (I have had long and sometimes contentious discussions with some about this, off site and in real life). People often get emotional about hardware and drivers, which are emotionless. Make no mistake, dual-core and quad-core are the way of the future. The quad-core graphics GPU setups, however, hare plagued with problems. Quad-core general computing is rare. The developers have not caught up with the changing nature of development methods and software yet. I'm sure CA will, in their next game. Maybe even in a future patch of RTW, if Sega funds it.

But right now, sadly, the real answer for many software programs is to simply shut the other CPU off... which leaves you with a normal single-core. This is why I've posted for a long time that as of right now, most average gamers are better served by saving the high cost of dual-core (~triple cost at the moment), and get the a good single-core CPU, which means there is only one choice... the AMD64 San Diego core (3700, 4000, 4200, 4400, 4800).

This summer is when I personally estimate the price point will be better, and the software releases more compatible (almost all by 2007).

But those that have dual-core right now just need to understand that they must learn a little more about how to use it... they hype of "just put it in and whooosh, feel the rush" is not true in all cases.

And one more thing. Dual-core is not Dual-CPU. Dual-CPU does not have these problems, for technical reasons and reasons of maturity of technology. If you have a dual-CPU (like Dual Opteron, e.g.), then you will not need to shut the 2nd CPU down to play RTW. BTW, dual-CPU means there are two separate CPUs plugged into your motherboard, and the infrastruture on the motherboard to support them. Dual-core means two independent CPUs and their caches on one chip, plugged into a single Socket 939 for example.

Another related topic is Intel. Some Intel chips "fool" the OS into thinking that two CPUs exist, and the OS behaves accordingly... when in fact only a single physical CPU exists. This is basically "hyper-threading", and is why DXDiag reports you have 2 CPUs on some Intel machines, when in fact you are certain you have only one. But guess what... there are certain technical issues with division of work, even in this method. Which is why Intel has been evangelizing new development software to developers for a year now... they don't want their chips known as the "cause" of crashes and software problems. The new software is Intel-aware, and allows new releases to run smoothly.

So cutting thru all the crap, right now, the absolute best way for a non-tech person to go is very simple. Single core AMD64. Dual core AMD64+proper use for each software title is OK... if you have money to "burn" (but in a year when dual core hits stride, your $800 CPU will be $300 ).

This forumer also had the same problem, and same cure.

I will sticky this thread for the time being, which also links the other thread.

If you download the AMD Dual Core Optimiser from AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Utilities & Updates on the AMD Support & Downloads website, this also seems to cure this problem. I downloaded it and ran the game for 5 hours without any problems at all.

Having the same issue. Not entirely sure how you can turn off one of the cores though can someone please tell me?

EDIT: ahh figured it out. Seems to work.
