The Republic of Rome

These are turbulent days for the roman people. After the death of their first dictator in a hundred years, and almost recovered from the devastation that decades of struggle, both abroad and internal, brought, Rome finds itself threatened in various fronts once again.

Iberia, one of Rome's most ancient provinces, is now nearly completely dominated by the rebel Quintus Sertorius and his iberian allies, and he is not about to content himself with it. Sertorius must be stoped at the price of having him nominated dictator, or even worse... king of Rome!

In the East, King Mithridates and his armies threatened to take over roman influence and power in Asia Minor for years, and now, after they have invaded, yet again, roman provinces and allies there, war against Pontus has been declared.

Parthia also threatens roman territories. The descendants of the Persians have expanded through the lands of Babylonia, Armenia and Arabia until they reached almost Rome's back door. Will the Parthians be willing to halt their expansion or will war follow?

And in Italy, who is this man that drives a horde of slaves, gladiators, and even freeman who have decided to join an army of rebels? Surely nothing more than rabble scum to be delt easily by Rome's armies...

----

Unit Roster

1 - City Guards

2 - Velites

3 - Auxilia

4 - Legionaries

5 - Legionary First Cohort

Stables

Roman Cavalry

Siege Engineer

1 - Onagers, Ballistas, Scorpions

2 - Heavy Onagers, Repeating Ballistas

The Officers
General, Aquilifer, Standard Bearer, Centurion.

Legionaries will only be recruitable in Italy. In the later game, however, some cities across the map will be able to expand and recruit them. But there will be few of them.
The Roman's siege weapons will be very powerfull. It will compensate to take ballistas and scorpions to the battlefield as they will cause a lot of punishment to the enemy.

To represent the Roman religion tolerance, a system of foreign temple construction will be available. You will be able to construct temples to the native gods, though not all the levels.

You could add something like that an auxilia cohort becomes a legionary cohort if it survivs for 20 years, as they were given citizienship after 20 years of service, even if only did guarding a town and never participated in a battle.

I don't think that would be possible. Its the same principle has turning pre-marian units into post-marian units and as far as I know it's not possible.
Also, auxillia only started receiving citizenship after years of service under the rule of Augustus, who re-organized the army.

mabey you could make some point in the game where all settlements gain roman citizen ship because one of the roman emperors made that happen or citys that are always safe gaurding italy or facing huge odds contiune to win battlesare granted citizen ship and also a time when it becomes the roman empire

Um, this is set in the late Republic. No Emperors for quite some time. Plus the fact that Roman citizenship was for Romans only, and a few prominent provivncial people as well. The Italians, at this time, had just fought a war for Roman citizenship.

Roman citizenship was given out to the free males of the Empire in 212 AD. Long after the game stops. And it was only for military and financial reasons.

Some cities will have access to citizenship, though they will be very few and will need to have certain requisites in order to achieve that. In those cities, unlike the other non-italian provinces, you will be able to recruit and re-train legionaries.

No one can know the exact species of dogs. They keep interbreeding the god damn things. Also using Wiki counts as intelligence as you were the only one who could be bothered to type Roman citizenship in a search engine, sift through the crap and then find the small amount of information you needed.

What if a town makes like 50 or more auxilia and they all survive like 50 turns then that town can make like doubly expensive legionarys

I also dont think that is true or what if you have auxilia and they survive 50 turns (about 25 years) they have to have all been in combate in atleast three battles where they fought in killed some soldiers then are dibanded cause they would have been given roman citizen ship then they would have joined the normal populace so you could then make legionary cohorts but there is a maxumum amount.

cause being abal to make one kinda weak melee unit in most roman city's is kinda boring well atleast to me.

Actually Zoro, it took 2 minutes. Mainly because Wikipedia links half the time to relevant info, and I struck the relevant one first time round.

Are you actually saying that once your units become veterans they should be disbanded??? I'm sorry but that would just hamper the roman empire further seeing that they are going to be assualted from every direction and even after the first 50 turns Rome is still going to need every single man it can muster.

Also Cannibas you are the master of scanning the web.

Just an idea:

For level 3 stables outside of Italy, how about "Gallic cavalry" or "Numidian Cavalry", or even both? They did use auxiliary cavalry, after all.

Can't you hire both as mercenaries?

That doesn't mean they're not underpowered.

I mean, yeah, they're alright, they can be useful, but historically, they were even more so.

Anyway, since I'm talking to a banned forumer, I'm going to say something relevant.

Is this all the units the roman faction has?
They seem like a side faction to me.
If this IS all the units Latium has it is EXTREMLY
inbalenced it should have some archers
If it is not all the units the faction has
and you are starting from scratch....well you have
a long way to go buddy
if all you are doing is adding this to the oringinal
units.....you should change up the skins a little bit
from the originals and probly tweak the stats too

The Romans didn't use archers extensively in battle, especially not until later. And remember there will be many more mercenaries.

posted 05 January 2010 16:45 EDT (US)     26 / 26
Rome did not have any archer units of its own. All archers used by the Roman army were Auxillia, i.e., foreign troops. Either mercenary or troops sent by its allies. Even the Velites ceased existing after the Marian reforms of the army. I'm only keeping them because I think that not having any ranged units would be a huge disadvantage for the roman factions.

When playing with Rome, if you want archers or good cavalry, you have to rely on mercenaries. Maybe I'll add a type of AOR recruitment building, like there is on XGM, but I haven't decided yet.
