I am making a new mod for R:TW, but as my mod team is still too small, I need help. I need YOU!

The mod starts in 1205 AD and is set entirely within Greece, the Balkans, Asia Minor and the Northern shores of the Black Sea, detailing the fate of the Byzantine Empire just after the Fourth Crusade captured Constantinople and it split into three - the Empire of Nicaea, Empire of Trebizond and Despotate of Epirus. The mod ought to capture the tension and intrigue of the time as well as the intense warfare between the factions, and with a campmap covering a much smaller area I shall be able to get much more geographical detail in. I am envisaging about 85 provinces.

Playable Factions:

Empire of Nicaea
Empire of Trebizond
Despotate of Epirus
Latin Empire
Montferrat Kingdom
Duchy of Athens
Bulgarian Empire
Principate of Kiev
Serbia
Seljuk Sultanate of Iconium
Armenia
Emirate of Edessa
Scythian tribes

Unplayable factions:
Hungary
Mongol Golden Horde
Venetian Colonists

Historical researchers are always welcome aboard, Ignoramus (ironic name though, in the context ).

And thanks for offering as well, James. I need unit and building specialists.

E-mail me and I'll let you in on what needs to be done and on any further details that I might need to give you.

Well, here's my take on the map. It's only going to be around Greece, the Balkans, Southern Ukraine, Asia Minor and a small portion of the Middle East. As a result the campaign map can be much, much more detailed with regards to topography, and I have in mind maybe 90 or 95 provinces.

Here's what I mean (campaign map outlined in red):

Okay bubba here is my position. I don't have the internet where I do my mod work from so I wont be posting many progress pictures until I feel that the progress is worth burning onto a cd to bring over here and post to you guys. I come over here everyday and check my mail and these boards and read up on my programming and texturing. I have more important things to spend money on right now other than internet but it will not slow my production. With that said here is what I have acclompished:

I created a campaign map and created extra ocean on the northeast sides of the map and right now as we speak back at my house RTW is trying to put together a 512x313 map. Double the size of it's original state. So I have a very good grasp on how the engine parses the map.

Now should we create a map of greece that is the size of the original campaign map and redo all of the resources and settlements? Or should we just do it like they did the sons_of_mars campaign and just restrict the map to greece? Your call, you're the boss. Whatever is decided the map needs to be done first. So we will need resource information soon.

Ok, I understand your restrictions vis-a-vis the internet and will bear them in mind.

I don't think that we can restrict the map to Greece, because that would defeat the purpose of the project really. It's about the three main fragments of the Byzantine Empire - and these are spread out over Greece and Asia Minor. I would prefer it if the various countries were represented in a much greater scale than they are on the ordinary campaign map, but we don't need to go way overboard either. Greece will certainly need to be represented as at least a quarter of the campmap, but there's no need to do too much. Now this will require a sizeable amount of work, but I think it would be worth it. Could you describe your campaign map to me in greater detail, so that I get a better idea of what you have done?

Anyway, these were my ideas.

Isn't the limit at 104 pronvinces... isn't it hardcoded?

if it is then just find some minor towns or you could hide them behind reems of forest.

IT's CA-VAL-RY! there's no "l" in front of the "v"!
And it's PRINCIPES, or PRINCEPS(s), HASTATI, HASTATUS(s), TRIARII, or TRIARIUS(s).
some people.

Well, I don't think I'll quite reach the limit - there aren't THAT many provinces in the whole map. I don't quite understand what you mean about hiding towns behind forests though.
posted 10 February 2005 15:46 EDT (US)     18 / 45
I thought that the hardcoded limit was anything up to 200.
posted 10 February 2005 21:43 EDT (US)     19 / 45
This map is 512x313 I may be a pixel off on the width anyway its freakin huge. It took the engine oooo about 4 minutes to generate the .rwm file. It took the computer about 2 1/2 minutes to end the turn for parthia because I made this region belong to parthia. http://uploads.savefile.com/redir/108453.jpg

It is my theory that maybe if that region didn't belong to one faction and was split up amongst the factions then maybe load/end turn time will be liveable. Anyway it's huge.

Zenith,
I am sorry I said restrict the map to greece when in all actuality I meant to say restrict the map to the areas we are going to use. Anyhow you already answered me when you said you want a new map. Yeah it will be a sizeable chunk of work but it shouldn't take that long. Quite a bit of trial and error time of course but I am sure we can devise some calculations to make life much easier.

Ben,
I am led to believe your side, about the limit of provinces I think you are correct and I picked up that information the same place you did too and also from some other boards from different people.

It's looking good so far. I'm working on the various designs at the moment - I'm concentrating on the various factions' units and buildings.

Your working on the various designs for what? The maps?
posted 12 February 2005 05:24 EDT (US)     23 / 45
I mean units and buildings and so on. You've seen my designs for the Greece and Asia Minor maps, but so far you seem to have that area pretty well covered.

I'm afraid I'm going to be away for three days or so, and as a result shall be incommunicado (for fans of the BBC Radio series 'Round the Horne', that's a small village in outer Mongolia. If you haven't even heard of this, don't worry). But I'll be back on Sunday or Monday.

Sorry I had something come up spur of the moment on my girlfriend's family side. I should have left notice like you but I was flat out busy. I am working on the map though, and it is getting done thats all I have to say.

Oh and on a little side note someone has developed a pretty nifty little campaign map editor program. I haven't used it much because it is pretty primitive. I like to use it to see if the map will load correctly though without having to load the game. I wish there was a way to disable that stupid copyright screen when you start the game up so you didn't have to wait. Anyway I am having a fun time with it when I get to sit down and play with it, it's actually coming along quite well. I will keep you all posted.
