This is a transcript of a convo between myself & Foamy when I was a little demented over what Vista had done to my unpacked files. My foul & abusive language born of frustration has been removed.

02/08/2007 22:06:06 Gaius Scotty Can you tell me how to?
02/08/2007 22:06:24 Scotty Gaius It's just a notepad file...what's the trouble?
02/08/2007 22:06:49 Gaius Scotty I ran the unpacker and ended up having to uninstall and re-install
02/08/2007 22:06:58 Gaius Scotty No sign of unpacked files
02/08/2007 22:07:15 Gaius Scotty They are handy for doing things like faction overviews
02/08/2007 22:07:26 Scotty Gaius Do you have...VISTA? *Dramatic music*
02/08/2007 22:07:39 Gaius Scotty How did you guess?
02/08/2007 22:07:46 Scotty Gaius Welcome to my world :P
02/08/2007 22:07:57 Gaius Scotty You are the human guinea pig!
02/08/2007 22:08:06 Scotty Gaius ^_^
02/08/2007 22:09:34 Gaius Scotty The subject of your first guide perhaps?
02/08/2007 22:09:51 Scotty Gaius What, a breif summary of the nightmares I encountered with vista? :P;
02/08/2007 22:10:07 Gaius Scotty A detailed one if it makes you feel better!
02/08/2007 22:10:32 Scotty Gaius >
02/08/2007 22:11:08 Gaius Scotty I can only hope my second uninstall and deleting the sega folder has fixed my game.
02/08/2007 22:11:22 Gaius Scotty I get CTD's when I enter battle mode in the campaign
02/08/2007 22:11:22 Scotty Gaius Nope
02/08/2007 22:11:32 Scotty Gaius Sorry, I'll have to show ye how to fixeth it
02/08/2007 22:11:37 Gaius Scotty Oh dear
02/08/2007 22:11:51 Scotty Gaius go to your HD, and click on USers
02/08/2007 22:11:54 Scotty Gaius *Users
02/08/2007 22:12:13 Scotty Gaius once there, click on the folder of the user you are currently on
02/08/2007 22:12:15 Gaius Scotty *obeys*
02/08/2007 22:12:31 Scotty Gaius Now, you MUST have hidden files turned on
02/08/2007 22:12:47 Gaius Scotty eh?
02/08/2007 22:13:09 Scotty Gaius in order to get where your unpacked files are, you must turn hidden files on
02/08/2007 22:13:21 Gaius Scotty How do I do that?
02/08/2007 22:13:40 Scotty Gaius go to control panel
02/08/2007 22:13:53 Gaius Scotty ok
02/08/2007 22:15:20 Scotty Gaius click on switch to classic view
02/08/2007 22:15:36 Gaius Scotty done
02/08/2007 22:15:47 Scotty Gaius and click on the files that says Folder options
02/08/2007 22:16:05 Gaius Scotty yeah
02/08/2007 22:16:29 Gaius Scotty view/hidden files & folders
02/08/2007 22:16:45 Scotty Gaius yes
02/08/2007 22:16:47 Gaius Scotty "show hidden files & folders-OFF"
02/08/2007 22:16:55 Scotty Gaius Switch it to ON
02/08/2007 22:17:13 Gaius Scotty It's at ON already
02/08/2007 22:17:26 Gaius Scotty "Do not show hidden files & folders-ON"
02/08/2007 22:17:31 Scotty Gaius oh
02/08/2007 22:17:37 Scotty Gaius switch it off then :P
02/08/2007 22:17:53 Gaius Scotty done
02/08/2007 22:19:07 Gaius Scotty And then?
02/08/2007 22:19:34 Scotty Gaius go back to your user folder, and click on the file that says "App data"
02/08/2007 22:20:00 Gaius Scotty ok
02/08/2007 22:20:04 Gaius Scotty local
02/08/2007 22:20:10 Gaius Scotty localLow

02/08/2007 22:21:20 Gaius Scotty Program Files
02/08/2007 22:21:25 Scotty Gaius yes
02/08/2007 22:21:29 Scotty Gaius then find Sega
02/08/2007 22:21:32 Gaius Scotty ProgramData is greyed out
02/08/2007 22:21:43 Scotty Gaius Program Files
02/08/2007 22:21:44 Gaius Scotty Holy mother of Baal
02/08/2007 22:21:51 Gaius Scotty There's loads of stuff in there
02/08/2007 22:22:09 Gaius Scotty Including stuff I've uninstalled since
02/08/2007 22:22:42 Scotty Gaius yeah...talk about HD space eh? :P
02/08/2007 22:22:54 Gaius Scotty Oh dear me. This is something else
02/08/2007 22:23:17 Gaius Scotty Why on earth are they hidden away here? Have they got a deal going with HD manufacturers?
02/08/2007 22:23:32 Scotty Gaius Some sort of demented Vista Shit
02/08/2007 22:23:45 Scotty Gaius when you extract stuff, it sticks it in this folder rather then the target file
02/08/2007 22:23:49 Scotty Gaius it's messed up
02/08/2007 22:24:09 Gaius Scotty This is insane. 5 gigs in the sega folder alone
02/08/2007 22:24:27 Gaius Scotty And it doesn't get uninstalled when you uninstall the game!
02/08/2007 22:24:50 Scotty Gaius Nope
02/08/2007 22:25:06 Scotty Gaius wierd, isn't it?
02/08/2007 22:25:12 Gaius Scotty Can I delete the folders for games I have uninstalled?
02/08/2007 22:25:33 Scotty Gaius yep
02/08/2007 22:25:58 Gaius Scotty It's plain sloppy that they stay on your HD taking up space
02/08/2007 22:26:27 Scotty Gaius It's Microsoft, what would YOU expect?
02/08/2007 22:26:39 Gaius Scotty Argh!
02/08/2007 22:26:48 Gaius Scotty Apple are never this insane
02/08/2007 22:27:05 Scotty Gaius No, Apple knows how to make, Microsoft knows how to sell
02/08/2007 22:27:20 Scotty Gaius if the two came together, they'd be unstoppable
02/08/2007 22:27:22 Gaius Scotty I am almost speechless
02/08/2007 22:27:33 Gaius Scotty So can I simply delete that folder?
02/08/2007 22:27:55 Gaius Scotty I reinstalled the game this morning though
02/08/2007 22:28:01 Scotty Gaius the folders of which you uninstalled
02/08/2007 22:28:04 Scotty Gaius the games
02/08/2007 22:28:06 Gaius Scotty Should I uninstall first?
02/08/2007 22:28:15 Scotty Gaius No, it won't affect the game
02/08/2007 22:28:31 Gaius Scotty All my saves are in there
02/08/2007 22:28:31 Scotty Gaius if you delete it, you'll also get your save games back
02/08/2007 22:28:49 Scotty Gaius when you unpacked your files, the game redirects there
02/08/2007 22:29:01 Scotty Gaius your saves are in the original install folder, not this hidden one
02/08/2007 22:29:14 Scotty Gaius I lost my saves until I deleted that folder
02/08/2007 22:29:44 Gaius Scotty Erm...but my saves appear to be in the hidden folder
02/08/2007 22:29:56 Gaius Scotty The saves folder in Program Files is empty
02/08/2007 22:30:00 Scotty Gaius Yes I know
02/08/2007 22:30:17 Scotty Gaius Copy + Paste the whole thing into your program files folder first
02/08/2007 22:30:33 Scotty Gaius delete the two geography files, and delete the hidden ones
02/08/2007 22:30:36 Gaius Scotty Copy & paste all the files?
02/08/2007 22:30:45 Scotty Gaius copy + Paste the folder
02/08/2007 22:30:50 Scotty Gaius the one that says SEGA
02/08/2007 22:31:00 Scotty Gaius and paste it over your one in the program files
02/08/2007 22:31:07 Scotty Gaius it won't overwrite anything needed for the game
02/08/2007 22:32:08 Gaius Scotty Asking if I want to overwrite medieval2.preference.cfg?
02/08/2007 22:32:19 Scotty Gaius say yes to all
02/08/2007 22:32:55 Gaius Scotty About 4 days & 16 hours remaining
02/08/2007 22:33:05 Scotty Gaius what, do you have a piss poor computer?
02/08/2007 22:33:12 Scotty Gaius Mine took 20 minutes
02/08/2007 22:33:13 Gaius Scotty 2 gigs of ram
02/08/2007 22:33:22 Scotty Gaius I have that
02/08/2007 22:33:35 Gaius Scotty 1 day & 18 hours
02/08/2007 22:34:12 Scotty Gaius Ah
02/08/2007 22:34:18 Scotty Gaius Patience, my young padawan

The "SEGA" folder does not appear in my all programs folder.

But then I also installed my game in my user folder instead of Programs.

And now somehow my comp is acting psychotic for some reason... I think it's because I turned on hidden Folders. It wont open any window?! Ahh! Let me restart...

It doesn't show up on mine!

I installed my game in:
C/users/Theodor(My User)/tgs/sga/mtw2/

So there. Where are the hidden files?

If you can't answer that, can you tell me which file to save my campaign if I wish to re-install the game. Would the "gamesave.sav" file work if I wish to play it after re-installation?

All I can say is "oh dear"!
Can you uninstall it and try to re-install in the default folder? If you really must avoid "program files", then install it directly on your C drive.

Yes, I can re-install it.

Is the .sav file the only one needed to continue my game after installation?

Yes but there may be some issues if the game version is different to that the game was saved at.

Damn, I have problems with playing battles on the campaign map, you may know. So I guess I will have to finish the whole game with auto attacks for now then re-start a game with either the patch or get the expansion, like I was planning.

Did you run the unpacker? And if so, did you remember to delete the two geography files?

I didn't patch it yet... so it's the plain game.
And what 2 geography file are you talking about?

The two geography files cited in the HOWTO: Install Medieval II: Total War patch 1.2 and use the unpacker
Quoted from Unpacker Readme:
- NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will
cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is
launched:

data\descr_geography_new.txt
data\descr_geography_new.db

Ok, thanks.
I'll probably reinstall the game tomorrow. I'll post if I have any problems.

EDIT: ARGH! I reinstalled the game and had the same problems... I need to get the patch then. But then I won't be able to continue playing my campaign! I worked so hard on it!
I wish i got the expansion, but don't have enough money now so the patch will have to do...

*is tempted to use cheats on next game*
