Topic Subject: Rome total war benchmarks!! HELP!!
posted 14 December 2005 19:45 EDT (US)
I cant find any GPU performance charts anywhere, I'm having bad performance on my EVGA 6800GT 256MB and I wanted to see benchmarks but I cant find any.

does anyone have a link, or has the same graphics card as I have, and can tell me what kind of performance you are having.

Thanks all, any help is HUGELY appreciated.

Ah, yes, I have the same card. The card is one of the better ones available for this game, but there are a lot of other factors, such as your CPU type/speed, RAM, the performance of your HD and your system config overall. Can you be more specific? And frankly, since this is along the lines of a tech question, it would be better posted in the "Technical Help" section.

4.1Ghz?!

We are going to start keeping track of things like that here. People can look at that page, and it will point to posts like GPU info (as the page grows, just do a text search on it for the links).

There are 2 threads with GPU charts; one is here, and the other I have not found yet, but the Index page will be more complete in the next week or two. Anyone can suggest post links for the index in the Index thread.

Awesome stuff Wartrain!

@ tankman - In general, you can always benchmark your system using 3DMark - it a standard way to compare your system to others with similar specs.

yeah but a download of 100s of MB takes forever on my 28K dial up. I have a max download speed of 4KB a second.

4.1Ghz?!

yes 4.1ghz, actually 4.3ghz now(still running cool)

thanks for all the help wartrain and chonaman.

PS how well SHOULD it run?? and at what settings?

thanks again!

Well, the video card wouldn't cause you any problems, that's for sure. It is fully capable of rendering the game at a high frame rate with no lag even with settings on high quality, even with huge formations. If you're having lag issues, it is probably a configuration issue somewhere in your system, or you may have something using a lot of resources in the background. And of course, if you're having problems with lag online, it could simply be your 28k connection or someone elses machine that's causing the issues Even though you've got a Celeron instead of a full-strength P4 processor, it should handle the game quite well at 4.3 Ghz.

And you could always buy the 3DMark CD and have it shipped so you can skip the download. It's a very useful tool for benchmarking your video card and your CPU against lots of other systems.

all right that's good to know, and what about high quality shadows? should it run that well?(right now I can only fully render 300 men or I get lag)

that's cant be it, I have so many things disabled in services it couldn't be that(I have WinXP pro sp2).

PS.the PC in question does not have a internet connection will that effect benchmarking.

PSS.would old AGP VGA bus drivers have anything to do with it(I have the one that came with the motherboard(old)

thanks again.

Hi again Tankman. Just as a FYI, in the tech section, its OK to bump or update relevant threads, even if a few weeks old. It makes it easier for others to follow the development of a technical issue to have it in one place.

Your issues are of general interest to many other people, but they just don't know it.

will this run BI?? if so! well?!?

best GPU option for rome total war.

Hehe, that itself can be a cause. Certain services have very unusual dependencies. Unless you have a good understanding of services, and know the dependencies (very complicated), it is normally best to leave them at default. If you used and understood Black Viper as a basis, then you are probably OK.

You need to not only update GPU drivers, but system drivers (including bus & GART), especially northbridge (e.g., nVida nForce, or VIA 4in1).

Post your DXDiag (Start - run - DXDiag - run all tests - Save All Information - Open file & copy all - paste into a post) and preferences.txt

I have a fairly good understanding of services, the thing is it did it before I had so many things disabled in services.

Okay I will do that now!

PS it cant be viruses or spyware either because I don't have a internet connection on my gaming PC. Plus I check all transported materials(mods, updates)for spyware and viruses before I put them on my hardrive. could it be a regestry thing also??

Thanks.

Comments:

1. SB drivers old; you can get the 2005-08-01 drivers here for XP. Sound has some unusual network dependencies, and certain sound drivers have been known to cause problems. {Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit and Sound Blaster Audigy LS driver 1.04.0055 (11.91 MB)}

2. Oh-my-gosh. A SiS Chipset. *runs for the hills* Is that BIOS number (3.0v) really correct? What about 3.0A?
BIOS

Tankman, do not rush out and change these BIOS settings, but since you are an overclocker with services knowledge, here is a part of the general SiS recommended BIOS settings, here.

BIOS

Update to the latest BIOS version available for your motherboard
BIOS Update Sites by Manufacturer
Additional Information in the USB Problem Solver

As a General Rule the following BIOS statements should be true:

Set the FSB to Default Value - No Overclocking

Plug and Play Operating System - Enabled for Socket 7 / Disabled for Newer Systems
IRQs Assigned - Auto or OS
USB or USB Keyboard (Legacy USB Function) - Enabled

BIOS Controlled Power Management Support - Disabled
If the following BIOS functions are available
BIOS support for DMA - Disabled
Write Prefetch - Disabled
ACPI - Disabled
Enhanced Chip Performance - Enabled

I don't necessarily agree with all "their" recommendations, but the key is the part about overclocking. I'm assuming you are well aware of the interactions of bus speeds, in particular, on your system, and on the RAM timings, and how the CPU synchonizes with RAM. I don't have time for a huge overclocking post, and basically make the rule that once overclocking begins, problems can begin. It may not be a problem because of OC, but SiS+OC =

"Handgrips - Raise
Triggers - Squeeze"

(the boldface for ejecting from a plane I used to fly, used when you no longer could control and predeict events!).

Try the updates, and hope for the best. The GPU is a good card; I will not say that about SiS, even they pay me.

Thanks war train.
Is there anything wrong in Preferences.txt?? something that may harm performance?

What is UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD do anyway.

one last question:

I dont have a floppy drive..so how do I flash the BIOS??

Reinforcement delays delays are caused by a setting in the preferences.txt file, namely UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:FALSE.

If you want to change it, then first back up Preferences.txt (make a copy somewhere), then open preferences.txt with notepad, change as below, then save and might as well backup to a new filename.

Set UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD to be either TRUE or FALSE, like:

reinforcements delay
UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:FALSE

reinforcements do not delay
UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:TRUE

You can control a maximum of 20 units on the battlefiled (BF) at one time... that is an absolute limit, no matter what hardware you have! You can have more units on the battlefield, but they are controlled by the AI... not you (the human). These are called reinforcements. And the AI often does 'dumb' things with reinforcements. To use reinforcements (your units beyond 20) immediately this way, set UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:TRUE.

If UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:FALSE (the default), then your reinforcements (units past #20) will DELAY entering the battlefield, until you control less than 20 units. So if two units are killed, for example, you have 18. If you have another full stack waiting, then two more units will enter the battlefield from the standard battlesquare vector.

SECOND, SEPARATE ISSUE: AI CONTROL.

In the battlescroll which appears as the battle is initated in the strategic map, there is a computer icon which has a box beside it; if you uncheck this option, then you will control all reinforcements... up to 20, maximum. After 20, the AI gets the rest (if you set UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:TRUE).

Your own reinforcements will always arrive at the beginning of the battle, but you can still only control up to 20 units. If you let the AI control your reinforcement (the box is checked), then your reinforcements will cross the red line and join you immediately.

However, if you set UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:FALSE, then the AI will control all reinforcements.

EXAMPLE: Your scroll opens and you have 3 stacks. Your primary stack has 5 units, and the other two have 12 and 20. Your total units at combat initiation is therefore 5+12+20=37.

UMOB AI Box #Units on BF When #Units You #Units waiting
(maximum) control to enter BF
====== ========== ============ ======= =========== =============
TRUE + Checked = 37 Immed. 5** 0
TRUE + UnChecked = 37 Delay 20* 17***
FALSE + Checked = 20 Delay 5** 17
FALSE + UnChecked = 20 Delay 20* 17
Special notes:
* - You will control the reinforcement units when they actually enter the active BF.
** - The AI will control all your units on the active BF beyond your primary army stack, including those that are delayed.
*** - As long as you have 20 units on the field, your remaining units will await entry behind the red line; as some of your units die/leave the BF, these reinforcements will begin to enter, keeping you at 20.

About the BIOS upgrade, you will probably need to install a floppy, at least temporarily, if you do not have one. A note... check the BIOS readme carefully, and see if the changes that have been made since the revision you currently have are significant. Makers almost never make 'secret' (e.g., undocumented) BIOS changes for stable releases, so if no things have been changed that will help you... then don't go to the trouble. There is a strong case for "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", since there is a chance the update might fail during flash and possibly leaving your computer unbootable (check the readme warnings to be sure).

EDIT: Note: This post is now link to this one because of liklihood of more general interest.

Oh so THATS what that does! thank you much.

But what about 1.2 1.3 or 1.4 patches will they gid rid of this bad performance??

PS. I am getting a full throtal P4 3.0ghz with HT technology
will that help as well??

So far, I think the 1.5 patch (for RTW) is looking pretty good. Install 1.3, then install 1.5. CA did not say everything they did in that patch, so we will have to just learn by experience. Be sure and post your experience with Patch 1.5, good or bad (see link in my sig).

I did install RTW tonight yet again as a test... this time on an ancient PIII Intel 82xxx graphic chip system. The frame rate on the strat map was 1 FPS, but it worked. Lag was 1.2 seconds... mouse move to pointer move. The game crashed (CTD) when it entered 3D battles.

That a hell awful system!!
LAG?? I call that a slide show!

PS. I will try the patches And if that doesn't work then I will go through with the P4 3Ghz Ht technology. that should do the trick once I overclock it, lol
