That's a bit odd. I remember bribing a rebel general from Africa, I think he was in Numidia. I can't remember his name right now but I could swear that his kids took on his last name, and I didn't like this very much because it wasn't a Roman name.

Not really. He actually married a roman woman, and then had the kids and I remember the kid keeping the guy's last name. I remember because I told myself "I'm never making this guy faction heir because I don't want a barbarian last name as my faction leader".
I should've taken a pic or something.

The way it works is that once a general has a name, he keeps it and passes it on, regardless of the faction. It is only the creation of the name that is restricted by descr_ names.txt.

I'm not really a veteran of the game, but I have a theory on that.
Most barbarians factions (Norhtern ones) don't have last names. If you bribe one of the generals, you can go to the family tree, and see that he is "adopted" by someone. The kid will take his last name from "grandpa".
If by any chance you bribe a general WITH a last name, he keeps the last name, and will pass it on. I seem to remember a branch of Oppii in may German family tree.
I might be wrong.
