No, I never liked greek cavalry. I'd have some around to finish off routing enemies and possibly harrass skirmishers/archers but that's about it.

Greek cavalry is one my favorite cavalry in the game. just today i was playing as Greece and my two units of heavy greek cavalries destroyed the two units of Roman Principes with one silver chevron and a unit of hastati. It is also on the highest level of difficulty. when i played as armenia last i dont really like the Cataphracts much. way too expensive and for some reason i quite can't figure out to properly use those cata's. wwhether you use them in your main force or your flanking force. they are too precious units to loose in combat.

Cataphracts are a superior force if you lack the finesse and micro skills to manipulate a large group of Greek Cav. that will require cycle charging. Greek Cav. perform better against such cavalry killers as DC's and HHM's due to their upgrades increasing their defensive skill and their reliance on armour being minimal. Cataphracts, as has been said before, will peform better in a prolonged mellee especially against heavily armoured units (Preatorian Cavalry for example) thanks to their AP maces; their mount-weight is superior to that of Greek Cav., as well, giving them a more dangerous charge (this is compounded by cav. blobbing so it makes Cataphracts a more dangerous force for 'sweeping the field') for a new player I would recommend Catas, or for somone facing players who can easily be overwhelmed by cav. blobbing. However for a more skilled player facing more able opponants upgraded Greek Cavalry may perform better

Fighting the Romans as the Greeks, I mostly use the cavalry to run around the infantry and harass the ballista/scorpions/artillery. Once these guys have to fight your cavalry for even a second, they never go back to firing their range weapons. Otherwise, I pretty much use them to take care of archers/slingers/javelins. Cavalry-to-cavalry I don't trust them, but of course with all those long pointy sticks on my infantry, I usually just use my javelin units to lure charging enemy cavalry into my hoplites.

You can just go north and hire some Samartian mercs, or go south and get some Numidians.

Or go west and get some barbarian mercenaries. Even they're better than greek cavalry.
