Here is the third forum sea battle. Basically, you move your ships around and shoot other ships. You can choose between four classes of ship: Bomb Ketch, Corvette, Frigate and Ironclad. I have bullet pointed the instructions for greater simplicity, new rules are in italics.

Bomb Ketch:
8 Movement Points per turn.
2 Cannons each side.
1 Forward facing mortar each side.
6 HP Stern, 8 HP Bow, 12 HP Sides.

Corvette:
7 Movement Points per turn.
4 cannons each side.
8 HP Stern, 12 HP Bow, 16 HP Sides.

Frigate:
6 Movement points per turn.
6 Cannons each side.
12 HP Stern, 18 HP Bow, 24 HP Sides.

Ironclad
4 Movement Points per turn.
6 Cannons each side.
18 HP Stern, 27 HP Bow, 36 HP Sides.

  • Each fleet will consist of one Bomb Ketch, one Ironclad, two Corvettes and two Frigates.
  • Each player will control two ships within one fleet.
  • There will be no alliances between fleets.
  • There may be up to four privateer's Corvettes floating around. They are easy prey if you are in numbers, but they are experienced. Whether thay are there or not will depend on the number of entries.

  • The following actions may be used:
    - Move Forward.
    - Turn to Port (left for landlubbers).
    - Turn to Starboard (right for landlubbers).
    - Fire guns to Port - Fires a volley of all portside cannon.
    - Fire guns to Starboard - Fires a volley of all starboard side cannon.
    - Fire mortar - Fires both mortars (Bomb Ketch only).

  • Each action takes one movement point.
  • Guns have a range of 2 squares (hit any ship up to the second square directly abeam) and cannot fire over the islands.
  • Mortars have a range of between two and five squares directly forward and can fire over the islands.
  • Each forward movement moves your ship one square forward and each turn turns your ship by 90 degrees.
  • Gunnery gets better the closer you are to the target.
  • For a broadside to broadside attack, you have a 60% chance of hitting a target in the first square and a 30% chance of hitting a target in the second square.
  • For a broadside to bow or broadside to stern attack, the chances are 50% and 20% respectively.
  • Mortars against a broadside have an 80% chance of hitting from 2 squares, 60% chance of hitting from three squares, a 40% chance of hitting from four squares and a 20% chance of hitting from five squares.
  • Against a bow or stern, these chances are 65%, 45%, 30% and 10% respectively.
  • Each hit by a cannon takes off 1 HP from the section of the ship hit, each mortar hit takes 2 HP.
  • You have limited ammunition, each ship will have enough ammunition for two firing volleys (cannon or mortar) per turn, it doesn't matter where they are fired from.
  • All probabilities will be worked out using the random number generator on my calculator, as tossing a coin 50 times gets a little tedious.
  • A ship is considered dead when it is holed (ie. no HP left on any section).
  • If you kill a ship, then you get an experience point.
  • Each experience point gives a 5% bonus to the chance of any shot hitting.

  • You will lose firepower when you are hit.
  • Frigates and Corvettes will lose one cannon for every 4 HP lost on that side.
  • Ironclads will lose one cannon for every 6 HP lost on that side.
  • Bomb Ketches will lose a cannon after 4 HP and a mortar after 8 HP.

  • If two ships collide, the ship that is stationary will lose 2 HP from the point of contact.
  • The moving ship will lose 3 HP from the point of contact (the bow) and lose all remaining movement points for that turn.
  • Any ship hitting an island or going off the edge of the map will lose 3 HP from the bow and all remaining movement points for that turn.

  • Each ship will gain 1 Repair Point at the end of each turn.
  • This allows them to repair damage at a maximum rate of 2 HP per section per turn.
  • This will gain you back your lost guns if you repair enough HP.
  • Repair Points can be stocked up between turns if they are not needed or the commander does not want to repair his ship for some reason.
  • Repairing will not cost any movement points and must be done at the start of a turn.
  • Any section or combination of section may be repaired at once.

  • There will be chests in the water, picking these up may grant you bonuses or they may contain a mine.
  • Where x is a random variable:
    - Extra Cannon (x < 0.15) - You get an extra cannon on the side of your choosing.
    - Upgraded Sails (0.15 < x < 0.30) - You get 1 extra movement point per turn until the end of the game.
    - Repair Kits (0.30 < x < 0.45) - You get 5 Repair Points.
    - Extra Ammunition (0.45 < x < 0.60) - You get one extra volley of ammunition per turn until the end of the game.
    - Upgraded Powder (0.60 < x < 0.75) - Your cannon get their range increased by one square.
    - Armour Plating (0.75 < x < 0.90) - This can be added to any section and increases the hitpoints of that section. It takes damage first, and once it is gone, it is permanently lost.
    - Mine (0.90 < x < 1.00) - You lose 3 HP on each section.

  • I will not play a fleet, but any privateers will be controlled by me.
  • Be aware that I will not necessarily update the map after every turn.
  • Remember, ramming another ship or an island will lose you 3 HP on the bow.
  • The islands are defined as any square containing land.
  • Firing at where a ship has just left carries no penalty, but you do look fairly stupid doing it.

Game Over. The Norse Raiders have won.

  • Each ship in a team is numbered 1-6.
  • Weaknesses in a ship are highlighted in yellow and critical weaknesses in red. Destroyed ships are in black.
  • Weakness means 5 or less HP.
  • Critical Weakness means 2 or less HP.

    Kills so far:
High Captain Valandil in the Hirilande has killed Captain Blackbeard of the Jolly Roger with two fine volleys to the stern.

Admiral Makavelli in the USS Ambusher has finished off the already damaged stern of the Contented Roland, consigning Captain Greybeard to Davy Jones' Locker.

Admiral Steace in The Butcher has started reduced The Norse Raiders to five ships, sustaining the bombardment to the Doyle's Run's portside and relieving maximus the Great of the heavy burden of life.

Admiral Winterfeldt in the USS Nauthiz has eliminated the Privateer menace in the Western sea by putting two rounds through the Merry Robert's portside, capturing Captain Blondbeard and hanging him by the neck until death took him.

Admiral Reynolds in the Thor's Hammer has finished wrecking the HMS Greenwich's bow, equaling up the fleet balance between the Norse Raiders and the Ghosts by the death of Samuel Peterson.

Admiral Reynolds has taken another kill by finishing off the HMS Grenadier's bow, killing Gregory Doddard and becoming the first ship to take two kills.

Captain Gingerbeard in the Happy Ronald has finished off the HMS Liverpool, claiming the first Privateer kill and making himself a dangerously experienced opponent for any ship to face.

High Admiral Lord Horatio Ferret has displeased the Gods with his inactivity. A well-placed meteor has done much to fix this problem.

Admiral Makaveli has proved resilient to withstand a fearful battering to his stern and now return fire again, destroying the Dafeng's bow.

Captain Gingerbeard has killed another foolish lone captain, this time it was Mr Sekto in The Oktigi.

Sam Fischer in the Gallchobar has finished off the damaged Panni IV for his first kill.

Admiral Makaveli in the USS Ambusher has claimed his third kill with a strong bombardment to the Privateer's Howl's bow.

Admiral Steace in The Butcher has finished off the Hirilande's damaged stern for his second kill.

Captain Steace in The Assassin has finished of the already severely damaged stern of the Numerramar for his first kill.

Captain Shadowarmy75 in the USS Fire Spitter has finally dispatched the Happy Ronald to rid the seas of the privateer menace.

Sam Fischer in the Gallchobar has taken matters into his own hands after his gunners failed him, ramming the USS Fire Spitter to send it on a one-way trip to the sea bed.

Admiral Steace in The Butcher has used his gunners' experience to kill The Jolly Roger, his third kill.

Captain Markham in the Odin's Spear has used his mortar accuracy to finish off the HMS Pride, his first kill and the first by any bomb ketch.

Mr Monkfish in The Sea Rex has claimed his first kill and the first by an Ironclad with a great bombardment of the Noon II's stern.

Admiral Makaveli in the USS Ambusher has claimed his fourth kill by hitting the already critically damaged stern of The Assassin.

Admiral Lord Christmas in the HMS Crudbucket has claimed his first kill by wrecking the Gallchobar's bow.

Admiral Makaveli in the USS Ambusher has given a masterclass in naval gunnery to the now deceased crew of the Pinup, currently residing in Davy Jones' Locker.

Jax in the HMS Omen has picked a good ship to score his first kill against, proving one ship too many for the USS Ambusher with two fine mortar hits to the portside.

Captain Markham in the Odin's Spear has taken his second kill by firing his mortars into the stern of the HMS Ocean, reducing The Oppressed Peoples of Ferretoria to a single ship.

Admiral Lord Christmas in the HMS Crudbucket has completed the destruction of The Butcher's stern, sending Admiral Steace, another much vaunted captain to a watery grave.

High Admiral Winterfeldt in the USS Tiwaz has claimed his first kill, finally overcoming the heroic defence put up by High Admiral de Ruyter and sinking the de Zeven Provincien, the last remaining ship of the Tarichtians.

High Admiral Winterfeldt has taken his second kill, another Ironclad. This time it was The Sea Rex that he sent to the ocean floor.

Admiral Reynolds in the Thor's Hammer has claimed a third kill, smashing the stern of the HMS Omen and ending the chances of The Oppressed Peoples of Ferretoria.

Admiral Lord Christmas in the HMS Crudbucket, determined to fight until the bitter end, has persevered in sinking the USS Nauthiz, ramming with his own ship once his ammunition was exhausted.

Captain Markham in the Odin's Spear has used his experience in firing his mortars in another perfect volley, finishing the damage to the stern of the HMS Crudbucket and winning the battle for the Norse Raiders.

Game Over. The Norse raiders have won.

Updated. Thanks to Shrink for filling in the spaces available. Ichbinian, maybe doing a Frigate and a Corvette will make the space in your team more likely to be filled.

Can teams come to some agreement on a team name please.

    So far, we have:
    Team 1 (Unnamed, Red): Stone_12345, shadowarmy75, Shrink.
Team 2 (Unnamed, Blue): Ichbinian, Tarquinius.

    Quote:

    Corvette:
    7 Movement Points per turn.
    4 cannons each side.
8 HP Stern, 12 HP Bow, 16 HP Sides.

    Maximus The Great

    @ Yakcamkir

Change the name of my ships please.

I want the Bomb Ketch to be Odin's Spear, and the Frigate to be Thor's Hammer.

Gungnir and Mjolnir (the names of Odin's spear and Thor's hammer, respectively...)

I like how your getting into the act, John

I know just enough about the Norse legends to be dangerous. The massive book I got a while back on mythology covers the Norse legends too, but I haven't read into them too indepth yet. I remembered from somewhere that Odin preferred a spear, and that Thor weilded a hammer. I thought it would fit the spirit of the game.
