Yay! A big DLC, technically an expansion pack.

So, what do you guys think?

Edit: see our gallery for pictures.

Excellent! Glad to see a completely new campaign this time, gives more variety.

We also have the first pics from the new expansion pack. Find them in our gallery!

And yes, I only just realised we didn't have a link to our gallery anywhere.

Yay! Gallery! Those pictures look amazing. And new agents!

How do you link from the Gallery? It doesn't seem to be letting me.

All those units look weird. They look a bit like the Kingdom(Americas) units looked when I first saw them. Colourful and... strange.

Anyone know why they all have such big shoulder pads?

Great news indeed! And some new weapons to add to the fray...clubs and the like. I noticed the large shoulder pads, they look very samurai-ish though so I wont complain. Screenshots look incredible too

EDIT: Its up on Steam! $10.00 isn't bad and it explains some of the units. heroes. and new agents. This looks really cool!

Possibly even Afty could agree with this new campaign DLC, with it being in an uncovered time period before the Sengoku Jidai period and all that.

Bought it in anticipation for its release, some Civilization V DLC was released at same time too so seemed sensible to get both .

I think this one looks best. Maybe not the actual units, but the enviroment and mountains just look awesome.

10 new naval units sounds really cool too, especially since naval warfare was pretty important during the Gempei wars. We finally get mounted heroes (mounted samurai)!

This makes me want to cry because my computer sucks D: I wouldn't be able to admire the units.

Not many of us can. I play on low settings, but can put it up to full without crashing or anything, but the camera lag is really bad. I will only put it up to full for the initial look, then put it back down. Maybe keep it on high for some screenies

I'm assuming the units armed with clubs get new animations?

Yeah! Now all we need is a matchlock hero! Oh wait, we already got one with the heavy gunners...

Imagine a matchlock hero... *Drools*

Hmmm, nice point AFF, I never really think of things like that! I suppose they will have a cool animation, hopefully crushing men in front of it instead of just swinging it.

I wonder what the new ships will be? I'm guessing gunpowder had no place whatsoever in this time period, so they have to be classic Japanese ships.
posted 08-15-11 11:09 PM EDT (US)     14 / 52
Yeah, and the navies in this era of Japanese history were very important. With 10 new ships there should be plenty! I'm assuming the roles will all be the same. I'm actually surprised they didn't carry over the same ships from shogun 2 minus the matchlock and cannon ships.

TBH, most matchlock units are powerful enough as is, a matchlock hero would need to be extremely expensive, and it would be most certainly unrealistic. The only thing I could see them as being able to do to not be realistic would be having FBR without the upgrade, and having quite a bit of armor, and being good sword fighters... Wait... I think i'm onto something...

I'm not even that keen on matchlock. Only ones I use are ships and Shimazu Heavy Gunners.

They'll probably have some of the normal ships like medium bune but just give it a different name.

So, what do you guys think about the agents? It seems to me they are almost the same as the original ones but with different names.

I feel like the AI will bring NOTHING but that Samurai unit that has both a bow and a sword, because that is pretty basically Bow Samurai, and that's what most of the AI armies consist of.

Which unit is that? There is one photo of some clubmen and archers, but I think that is 2 units walking together or something.

Ok...the new info gives a much clearer picture as to what we will be seeing. I love it! I can see that the three major families all have different looks to their units as well. This will definitely be better than the 2 DLCs we have seen so far. And a hint to more in the future at the end of the article....

Me likes that as well. It's a great game and as far as I'm concerned they can happily continue making DLC and patches for another year or so.

I preordered it off steam. Now I'm left wondering about those 10 new ships that they are going to be offering. Also, I like the whole idea that units are not going to be fighting in formations as much. After all, this is all about honor!

That is what I never quite understood about Japanese warfare. Did tactics actually matter much, or did it not matter because they did not charge, they just found an opponent, stated achievements and family, then fought. It all seems quite relaxed to me...

One thing I noticed from the video is that the castle chain has a different image than the original, so hopefully that will also mean castle and sieges are different than vanilla.
posted 09-05-11 10:44 AM EDT (US)     24 / 52
New castles would be cool, and it would make sense as its 400 years earlier and castles undoubtedly evolved during that time.

New campaign map. Look much much better. It was annoying with all the mountains in vanilla, much flatter in this one. I hope the battles are a bit flatter too.

The map looks less busy and more refined. I love it! I wouldn't have thought that was something they were actually going to look at and change. More flat ground and large forests and stuff.

I wouldn't worry about it, as DLC's aren't usually given release dates until very near. I think it's because publishers want to draw attention to the DLC more.

Had it pre-ordered since it came on Steam Store, now just waiting for it to release so I can get some multiplayer campaign co-op in with friends. With the release of Paradox Interactive's Sengoku I've been back in to Feudal Japan with a vengeance.
posted 09-21-11 03:30 PM EDT (US)     37 / 52
I still haven't pre-ordered it.

I think the new map looks lovely, but a few things seem to be the same. Like the agents, which are the same as the original ones but with different images, names and skill trees. So when they say "4 new agent types", what they mean is they have changed their names.
posted 09-22-11 00:39 AM EDT (US)     38 / 52
That applies to practically every Total War game, and a fair few other games as well actually, though. While some agents are indeed quite different, like the M2TW Merchant, others are similar in role but different in name. Take away the addition of things like the skill tree and in essence the Ninja fills the same role as the Assassin from back in ye ol' RTW, they both assassinate people and sabotage stuff.

The history the Total War video games are based on are both a blessing and a bane, there are only so many things Japanese agents can do if you want them to tie in with their historical roles.

Ah, the truth hurts. I hope one day CA work on a historically inaccurate (Or even fantasy! ) Total War game.

It will be the 28th in Australia actually, if it releases at 10am PST (as usual for Steam), since depending on the release time your 27th is our 28th. So both dates are right, depending on which timezone one lives in .

Australians... You ruin everything! I bet it will be spring when it is released for you guys too?

These last few days its hard to be patient. In their developer diary I think they are purposely being vague Ever since Medieval 2 Kingdoms I have loved short but detailed Total war campaigns. I can play through them in a few days instead of a week or two and the whole experience is based more on battles than holding regions (which makes Shogun 2 all the more better since battles are incredible in this game).

Also the unit pack they released was a major disappointment....but the Ikko Ikki was pretty good.

It just seemed like the majority of the units were reused skins. It wouldn't be asking too much to redo the skins of the faction specific units (even if that means paying an extra couple dollars).

BTW....1 day and 13 hours until download of RotS!

It is out! If anyone's wondering, the update is 1800 MB, so good luck to anyone with low download speeds to get that in. I'm pretty happy with my glass fiber connection right now 3 MB/s definitely moves things along.

Hm, mine is 5KB/S at the moment.

Anyone wanna do the math for me?
posted 09-27-11 01:58 PM EDT (US)     51 / 52
1800 Megabyte roughly equals 1,800,000 kilobytes, which equals 1,800,000 * 8 = 14,400,00 kilobits. At 5 kb/s, that will take 2,880,000 seconds = 48,000 minutes = 800 hours = 33,3 days. Sorry

May I ask what kind of connection you are on? 5 kb/s is slow even for a dial-up. Your firewall or something might be interfering.

          Hussarknight
posted 09-27-11 02:13 PM EDT (US)     52 / 52
Well it can get up to 10Kb/S, but it won't seem to do it at the moment.

I have a... I dunno. It is a wire that comes in from the wall, plugged into a router, then from an Ethernet cable to my laptop. It use to be better but the internet-people have broadened their area or something, and it is terribly slow now. It is this slow on 3 computers.

We have another Router to see if that works, but none of us know how to properly install it or anything, and pressing the help button while trying to replace it takes you to an internet page, which is stupid since there is no connection and the page doesn't appear.

Do you think changing the router may work? :S
